One can also argue that our Hitman, Number 47, does just about the same thing. Preventing bad people from causing more damage. Where the states and their laws fail, a hitman can still set the world right.

But 47 doesn't mind killing "innocents". It's just that the Agency is usually contacted to kill bad people, but he has killed at least two innocent men in his career (the private investigator trapped in Rendez-Vous in Rotterdam and the mailman in one of Blood Money's cutscenes), and a lot more depending on how you played it. Actually, it bothers me that the game needs excuses for him to kill people. He's a fucking hitman, he's supposed to do "whatever he's payed to do". I wish they just stopped this ridiculous nonsense.

What about the Swing King? He's more innocent then the guy in rendez-vous in rotterdam.

Well, one could argue that he covered up the crimes of his insane brother.

Back on topic, I really like the idea of Dexter, but I've only watched it a couple of times. I hope they don't ruin it over time.

Glad to hear you ended up liking the series. It is quite great.
I wonder though, do you have a favorite season out of the two (most people prefer the first one)?

well, without being too spoilerous...

I prefer the first season, but only by a slight margin. I'm not sure why, probably because simply because it was the season that got me hooked. Season one had a slightly better story arc, in my opinion. There was a red line throughout the season, namely the ice truck killer rivalry. I thought this was less the case in season two. It focuses more on Dexter's personal relations and incidents and run-ins with the law.

On the other hand, I felt that with season two, the quality of the episodes was more consistent throughout. I thought the last couple of episodes of season one were a bit.... sketchy. I didn't really like the way Brian's character developed towards the end.

Season two has a similar flaw. I really liked Lila's character. I liked her a lot, actually.... untill the final four episodes where she just became entirely annoying. Kinda like Sherry Palmer - if you've seen the series '24'.

I do like how the second season has a lot of flashbacks to Dexter's childhood, and the way in which they were filmed and exposed throughout the season. Season two also had a lot of cool funnies, such as hypothetical scenes taking place in Dexter's imagination. his Dark Defender fantasies, the scenes where he considers the possible consequences of telling Deb about his dark side, etc.

hmm, the more I think about it, the more I think it's a really close call. which is good, because it means the series is still strong. I have good hopes for season 3.

Dexter is pretty good stuff and I like how they found a guy who basically looks like a cross between Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer to play as him.

Stumbled onto Dexter while I was waiting for programs like The Shield and The Unit to come back on. I love the show and think it's brilliant. Having finished both season one and two on DVD, we ( the G/F and I ) have been glued to season three on Showtime.

On a whim, I picked up the first two books for the Kindle and have DEVOURED THEM. Great reads - and the story is QUITE different than the TV series, but all the comic brilliance is there in spades.

If you enjoy the series, and have the time to read before bed or on a trip, I would definitely recommend the book series to get some more of the story line.

I'm almost 100% certain it is not. As far as I know it's supposed to air in September of this year.

It's not his arm. It's the arm of one of the victims of the ic truck killer.

I was completely mistaken. I confused season one and season two of the show with the books I have been reading. Apologies across the board. I have viewed season one and have been glued to seaon two of the series , but I am reading the third book currently.

Sorry about that! I sincerely did not want to mislead the forum.

Oh yeah. I guess I can see how you could fit "Dearly Devoted Dexter" between season 1 and 2 (there's a few problems that would arise with continuity, but not a lot). I don't think they'd ever adapt it for TV though... I mean... the stuff Dr. Danco does... I don't know if it could be shown... it's a bit grim... :hmm:

@amp: I sent you a PM with a couple of thoughts on TV-series.

Agreed. How you would pull off that first body they find of Danco's work would be a bit unbelievable - but all the stuff about Doakes and his background was much more interesting in the book.

Kent, or anyone else that has read the series, do you think that Kevin Costner movie Mr. Brooks was "lifted" from the Dexter book series? I see a lot of parallels between Dexter and his Dark Passenger versus Mr. Brooks and "Virgil", plus there were supposed to be three Mr. Brooks movies originally - before it kind of bombed at the box office....

Would anyone, who's read them, recommend me to read the books? I really enjoyed the first series of Dexter and am waiting patiently for the second series to air (I don't know whether to download them or not) on UK TV.

I'd also like to know how true to the book the series is and if the book is more graphic. Anyone who replies I'll say thanks in advance.

Yes. I would. I devoured both "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" (the first novel, on which season one of Dexter is based), and "Dearly Devoted Dexter" (on which no season has been based, and probably never will)... I've heard bad things about the third book, "Dexter in the Dark" however...

As to how true the series is to the book... the first season is a pretty close match to "Darkly Dreaming Dexter", with a few changes here and there. But it's definitely very close. Season two is not based on any of the books, and as such is only true to the books "in spirit".

The second book is pretty graphic. I think the first one is too... but I get the memories of the story so mixed up with the tv-series... it's hard for me to say for sure... probably at least as graphic as the series.

@Operator:

I don't know if I think Mr. Brooks was "lifted" from Dexter anymore than "Dexter" was lifted from "American Psycho". There are similarities there to be sure... but there's bound to be when it's a story with a serial killer as a protagonist.
