The world is shitty.

I had a whole speech ready to give, but fuck it. A guy calls me a cracker I'll call him a nigger. A guy calls me white, I'll call him black. I'll start with African-American when you start with European-Canadian.
Motherfuck, now I'm pissed off reading this thread.

Then don't read it.

I tried to, but it's like a bad car crash. You don't want to look, but you still do.

I always thought African-American was sort of passive aggressive....racism? Like a black dude can't just be American, he has to be African-American. Does that make sense?

No because it's never used in the sense you imply; African-American refers to race, not nationality.

Dave Matthews is technically an African-American, though.

Sorry I'm stupid. Please explain more.

Shouldn't whites be referred to as Anglo-Americans or something similar?

I guess I should look it up but I'd rather discuss it here :)

To illustrate my point, you could describe a person as being an African American for the sake of creating a mental image, but if you were black and someone asked you on the internet which country you were from you wouldn't say "oh I'm African American" (unless you were a cock).

I guess I see where you're coming from though; I think it's just that white people are the majority and therefore it's the default, so when something deviates from the default it needs to be mentioned.

Nono I see, looking up the history of the term it does seem to have been both taken as a good thing and a bad thing by Black people in the past. It's just interesting to me I guess I guess because you'll rarely get people saying I'm Anglo-African, Jamaican-English or some silliness over here.
Not to mention as pointed out in the link Kent has posted you'd be making some major assumptions by using the term

Also had an interesting discussion with a friend on whether it makes you racist to refer to a White person as "so some guy blah blah blah" but if they were black you said "so some black guy blah blah blah".

It's not because it depends on the majority and skin colour of yourself and that you're used to, but it's funny seeing the amount of indignity some people can feel about it

Correct me if I'm wrong here but, wasn't URKING a predecessor to UBL at one point? I have some hazy memories of him, but I keep remembering he had some far out political views and an agenda of some sort.
