Developer Crystal Dynamics is working on a new Tomb Raider meant to be an origin story for Lara Croft, the studio said today.

"Forget everything you knew about TOMB RAIDER," said Darrell Gallagher, Head of Studio, Crystal Dynamics. "This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."

The game, they say, will feature the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which "charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive."

'After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was travelling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive'

UPDATE: The game's official site shows that the game will be released for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It also shows that Lara might be holding a bow.

I think it looks and sounds pretty good.

Me too.

So, the franchise started sucking ass, and their response was to reboot it, make it suck again, and then reboot it again?

A pattern emerges.

Hell mother-flippin'-yes. Is it going to be anything like a survival style game, or is it merely going to be a superficial setting I wonder? Even so, it's nice to see the series go in a new direction, and these new screens certainly look tasty. It's also gratifying to see Lara ever so slowly moving away from her tit missile eroto-mascot sex symbol status into something hopefully representing a positive female depiction. Only time will tell.

You better be joking about the last few entries sucking fool, Underworld was a class act.

I haven't played Tomb Raider in years. I've only played one game and I don't even know which one it was. But this one looks more interesting than the ones before. I remember early artwork where she had a bow and arrows. I take a bald claim and say this time around she won't be blasting her dual pistols but instead improvising and combining equipments what she finds.

Those screens are not impressive.

But i'll get it anyway, because it's tomb raider.

At least they're taking it in a grittier direction. Hopefully they actually insert some survival elements rather than simply talking about it i.e. Lara kills an animal and has to make a fire to cook it or something. Obviously at some point she will be escaping some evil tribe on the island which is yawn worthy. Still, game looks alright. How many times have they 'rebooted' this thing though?

They would be if they looked exactly like that, but these are cleaned up so expect more aliasing etc.

Looks interesting. I notice that fire has a symbol over it, to burn rope or to warm her up as part of a "survival mechanic" I wonder.
The redesign looks good, the graphics look a little poor in places though.

Here's hoping the health mechanics let us dislodge that torch impaling her wrist. It's about time they actually took it in a completely different direction, though. I can't remember Tomb Raider having relevance since... what, the 90's? I also see no guns, so I guess the game'll be much more tense?

I hope that in this one it's more action than puzzles, in Underworld for me it was too much of 'think about what to do next' rather than just exploring some awesome scenery and shooting some dudes. Hopefully in this one with Lara being a bit younger we will see a much more fiery game style ^_^

Lara's alien face was the biggest issue for me, I'm glad to see they're making her look more realistic. Judging by the Gi cover (live model portrait) she may even be based on a real person, which is even better.

I also like the idea of ditching the headsets and grappling hooks for real exploring.

Is it open world? I wouldn't mind if the island was tiny, in fact it may be better for it as it would be more polished.

I loved Underworld for the fact that action often took a backseat to puzzle solving and exploring. It was obviously its weakest element so I'm glad there was less of it.

It is odd that some games these days that focus on exploration/platforming like Tomb Raider and Mirror's Edge (just because I've been playing it) seem to have combat as this kind of obligatory feature. It's almost as if they assume gamers will get bored without having the chance to blow up some baddies (or in Lara's case mow down some endangered species in the jungle).

They should seriously start improving it in the Tomb Raider games if they insist on keeping it, or at least offer actualy alternative routes to combat that become available to the player throughout the game.

I heard a rumour it may be open world.

As for combat it's always been secondary to puzzles and platforming in tomb raider. Hope it stays that way too.

I'd disagree there - TRII was a lot more combat focussed than any other title in the series. It had the largest arsenal, too.

I am almost certain now that Lara will be using stuff he gets her hands on.
