Question for Nick - (when) can you explain how the checkpoint save system works? Particularly with respect to having freedom to move around a map (i.e., in a non-linear way) and ability to approach multiple objectives/targets in the order you please? I'm more curious/concerned about this than any single other part of the game. Thanks!

Remember Max Payne 3? Where he shaves his hair and travels to Brazil, leaving away the Noir, Mystery, Dark, Dramatic awesomeness that made the Max Payne games popular? I just got that Deja vu from seeing 47's barcode and such...

@Nitro

In my theory.

Sector to sector/sandbox > open world. Close to the assassin's creed model.

I think it's the "pay off" of the second ARG. But not confirmed by Nick.

There are two ways to look at this with what we know:

The pessimistic way: The levels will be completely linear despite what has been said and checkpoints will appear at points throughout each level.

or

The optimistic way: The larger levels will be broken down room by room, with a checkpoint saving progress each time you enter a room or switch floors via staircases etc. (similar to Arkham Asylum).

To be honest, I think the former is more likely but it could be something else entirely. Whatever the system I hope they offer us a number of options, similar to Deus Ex, which offered the current save as well as the previous two autosaves. Perhaps we will learn more from the new stuff coming in Jan.

I don't think Nick will be answering anymore questions in here, because I think he then already would? Maybe it's just way to confusing with all the new questions for him :)

Always knew i didnt belong in this world. I wasnt

made for this. But Ill never forget - those who betrayed me, and

those who never failed my trust. Ill be carrying nothing from
Gontranno but this lesson: never trust anyone and rely on your

instincts. Forget the past. Ill never find peace here. So, Ill
seek justice for myself. Ill choose the truth I like.

There was no checkpoint in RFYL.

In my view, the checkpoints are at the entrance or exit of the subway.

And not in the sector himself. Absolution will not be like Blood Money with only one small sandbox by level. But will constitute a number of areas linked by the Chicago Metra lines that will form the "open world".
At least on several levels since Io announced that a part of the adventure takes place in Chicago.

That's wrong. I'm sure have read in some interview, that checkpoints will be divided up in several parts in levels. And it was also mentioned, that in the "Run for Your Life" level after 47 breaks through the door on the roof that a new checkpoint will begin.

This does not contradict what I wrote.

I would like to know your source. Not impossible, but it would be surprising. Why add a Checkpoint on a level so small...

There was no checkpoint in RFYL.

There are at least 4 checkpoints on this level. Small white flashlight indicate that game was saved.
1 - when 47 reaches the door 2 - cutscene (typical checkpoint in all games) 3 - when 47 makes jump 4 - when he enters in elevator.

Sgg847 already said it, that's the checkpoint - at least I think. But in the interview I read they used the roof door as an example. Can't find it now, but it's out there..

Indeed. RFYL is an escape level demo. So rather linear. The cinematic checkpoints are enjoyable and increases the intensity of the story.

There are two types of games or is used the Checkpoint:
Linear games. And open worlds. Io confirmed there will be always sandbox worlds.
There would be no meaning to instal checkpoints in a sandbox world.

Hitman will be never a totally linear game. This would end of the franchise.

This leaves only one solution.

Do not in. Between...

Hitman is linear game, but with a freedom of choice.

This leaves only one solution.

No.
