Edit: found him in the greenhouse. It was easy after that. Weird there isn’t an “elusive target - Dartmoor” challenge even if there’d be no suit reward. Fun ET, wish we’d get the Solstice suit and the travel case II with this ET but always time for next update.

If I pick up the painting first and things go wrong after, can I restart the mission “legally”? Talking about the situation where I haven’t killed the target, just picked up the painting.
As long as no objectives are completed, you can.
As retrieving the painting is optional in this one, I believe you can restart even with it in your pocket
That’s what I wanted to know, thanks. Were there ever optional objectives in any of the previous ETs? Hitman 3 is my first time playing ETs, so I’m not aware of the previous ones, if there were any.
As I can recall this is the first one with optional objective.
There were Surgeons ET where you needed to kill them with syringes found on the level itself, but it was optional.
As this is just a kill option, I don’t think it counts. But still
Thought of doing it suit only… But I found there were extra maids in the hallways, so I couldn’t get to my agency pickup (emetic pen). Got a gardener disguise (1st KO), then I got the pen. I was thinking he’d have to already be inside. So I wondered around for about 20’ish minutes, mostly traversing the ledges on the outside of the house (I was back in my suit). At some point I thought I’d get the butler with a peekaboo and coin… But it seems like you can’t take his disguise. 
Anyway, the coin alerted a guard, so I ended up getting a guard disguise (2nd KO). At some point I thought I’d find the painting (and it’s easy enough to tell where it is from the briefing). I find it, and here comes along the target dressed as a housekeeper, comes into the main chamber for Mrs. Carlisle. I thought of shooting the antler chandelier, but there was a guard that could’ve seen me shoot it. He was then just outside in the hall, nobody was looking, so I poked him with the pen, then drown him in the nearby bathroom. Got the painting…
I really kinda wanted to exit with my suit, but I chickened out and left with the guard disguise.

Just tried this and I was able to restart. Can confirm this is correct.
I also just discovered that if you use a syringe to kill the target and someone spots you doing it, you can immediately press pause and restart the mission, since it won’t count as a kill until the falling down animation is complete. Almost had a heart attack 
Felt ballsy today and after scouting my intended run a few times, I actually went and did it! SASO on an ET xD

Really wish we could replay ETs. One of the most fun parts of this game is to find new strategies and beat your own time.
Now that I think about it, after a while a new guard was standing in front of the staff bathroom, never moving away for the rest of the mission, but there was nobody inside. Maybe a bug? Like the one where the NPC suddenly walks through the ceiling and leaves the map? Perhaps that’s why I couldn’t find the ET?
Or maybe I’m just looking for excuses?

It took forever to find the target, but I finally got my Absolution Suit back.
Well I know I didn’t kill him and I know at some point the guard permanently remained at the door and I never saw another NPC inside the room. Maybe I really encountered a bug. Well I’ll probably never know.
You didn’t. Haynes said he needs to use the Bathroom, so instead, he disguises as Mansion Stuff and walks of. His Guard *Otto Burns or whatever his name is just waits for him and never checks.
*I give most NPC Faces a name as identification and Otto Burns is a Dartmoor Guard using the same Model as Haynes Guard.

Does he actually steal the painting? I followed him to madame’s office but got impatient and killed him.
This one is insanely easy if you happen to start as a gardener and use the greenhouse pickup. He’s literally right in front of you right at the start. I just shot his guard with the sieker and snapped his neck in the greenhouse, easy as it gets.
Getting the painting was much harder for me, as I had to infiltrate the house and there’s a few new guard placements, plus Alexa wandering around with her enforcer guard to random places. Got it in the end though, a nice SA rating and all.
So eh… Did you get a super special Dartmoor suit? I failed it guys
