Freelancer - General Discussion

I’m not saying they could have or even should have introduced such a mechanic instead of what we got. I’m just saying let’s not call an obvious bodyguard an “assassin” just because their guns pack more punch than any other. That designation is based on actions, not deadliness, and if IOI was thinking calling them assassins to set them apart was some kind of clever answer to simply seeing them as bodyguards, and helping us remember that we are still in a “world of assassination,” then they were wrong on that. All it did was point out how utterly lazy they are as assassins if they were to be called as such. Say what you will about the ICA agents, they at least had the excuse of just underestimating 47; the ones in Freelancer don’t even know they’re after 47.

Granted, but even there, the ICA agents, and other assassins in the series who were after 47, or his allies, at least behaved like assassins and had bios that gave us info about their skills, so they at least had lore explicitly establishing them as actual hired killers. The ones in Freelancer are only known as assassins because they are mechanically labeled as such.

If, for instance, you went into Apex Predator with no info from Olivia that the ICA were the ones after you, and you came upon the agents, you would know from their actions and general behavior that they were actively hunting you, and would understand that they were assassins seeking you out or lying in wait for you, unlike other guards on the same map (hell, even agent Montgomery had an actual bodyguard of his own). If IOI did not say in their promotions for Freelancer that we’d have to deal with assassins working for the Leaders, and the game didn’t give you that little notice saying an assassin was nearby, and we only learned about these specific NPCs by actually encountering them in the game, would anybody think to call them assassins, or would they just be assumed as the syndicate Leaders’ personal bodyguards, just like the ones that main targets like Novikov and Ken Morgan have? Yeah, they’re more dangerous than other bodyguards in how quickly they can kill you, but that alone doesn’t qualify to be labeled as an assassin, because the nature of the killing these guys do is defensive in nature, not offensive, which is what defines an assassin.

All I’m saying is, calling them assassins is a mislabeling that glorifies what these guys are beyond what they are. I’m not denying that theyre the deadliest enemies in the game as far as the damage they cause, but they would be even more deadly if the name fit and they were actively hunting you rather than wandering around waiting for something to happen just so they can protect their boss.

I think that’s the exact reason they didn’t do it. Everything in the Seven Deadly Sins was a proof of concept to see how well the mechanics worked and how the players reacted to it. The rival assassin in Envy was too easily defeated once you knew his route and to actually randomize him with targets that were also random wasn’t workable.

The way I look at it, Freelancer as a whole takes place after the Hitman III epilogue, that is the Safehouse being canon with 47 living there after exposing Providence and then going Freelance with Diana. 47 (working with Diana) then begin taking out random Freelance syndicates, however, the actual location as where the syndicates are taken out (Paris, Sapienza, Dartmoor etc) isn’t canon and it will just be left to the imagine of the players if 47’s Freelance hits are touched on in the next game.

I wasn’t really debating whether Freelancer’s canon or not (as I pretty much agree with what you wrote), I was just saying that the whole of Freelancer’s lore could easily fit in two sentences, “47 hunted criminal syndicates some time after the events of H3” / “47 operated from a safehouse where he got his information from Diana”, and that there’s not much else that could be said about it (assassins being just a game mechanic with no particular lore to go with them) :x

Anyone ever got this weird bug? Or isn’t this a bug? Killed all the targets, of course didn’t do it Suit Only (as you can see in the picture). But the kills didn’t count and all there was left for me to do was exit the campain like this. While the next screen was loading, an error popped up (something like “couldn’t handle request” - don’t remember exactly). I had the options to “retry” or “go to main menu”. After a few unsuccessful “retry” I’ve opened the main menu. Started Freelancer again and … everything was just the way before I’ve started this map. Didn’t lose anything, but also didn’t finish Sapienza. I don’t mind as this gives me another chance to try it Suit Only:

This sounds pretty much like the console version of “Alt+F4” trick. You know, to do so is to simply disconnect the console from the Internet, go back to the game menu, reconnect the game, then you can try again like it never happened. The same applies to ET when you kill the target without SA rating but want to try again without the restart prompt.

Anyway though, I’ve never encountered nor seen such bug that doesn’t allow you to exit.

Could be it. We had some internet issues lately here (heavy weather…). Maybe it disconnected for a few seconds and the game didn’t register it properly.

I’ve finally reached Prestige level 2! I prestiged the day of the last patch (May 11) so it took me 2.5 months to play Freelancer enough to recollect everything, at this rate I’ll reach Level 10 around March 2025. Based on my recent experience, here’s the changes I’d like to see:

  • Add in the ICA Outstanding Service Coin (finally)
  • Add an option in the wardrobe to choose what briefcase to bring along on missions
  • Make the Thematic weapons able to spawn in the supply crate when you complete a syndicate. It’s weird that they don’t and you need to wait for them to show up at a Supplier.
  • Have the Makeshift and Concrete weapons count toward Prestiging. Yes this means people who buy the DLCs take longer to Prestige, but I don’t like how it is right now where I had to waste Merces on some of them to get the weapons I actually needed to spawn.
  • Add a counter for the Prestige challenges. It’s weird they don’t have a counter when every other “Do something X times” challenge has a counter. Maybe they thought it was enough to just look at the trophy?
  • Have there be more rewards for prestiging. It’s dumb that for Levels 6-100 you don’t get any reward for bothering to get rid of your whole arsenal. Even if it’s just a really small XP and Merces bonus there should still be some benefit at every level with making the choice to Prestige.
  • Have there be a (rare) chance for multiple Safes to spawn in a level. Also, have a chance for two Suppliers to spawn in a level who sell different items.

I thought I could get through all the challenges especially after I finally beat Hardcore but the Prestige thing makes even that seem easy by comparison.

Maybe a better solution for that would be the prestige requiring any 131 weapons on the walls (if I counted right, this is the number of regular weapons), this way a player with the dlc does not need to work more than a player without the dlc for the prestige.

Really angry at myself at the moment. On my quest to finally get to level 100 and trying out Prestige Levels (at 1 at the moment), I’ve got a phonecall in the middle of a showdown. Pressed pause, talked on the phone didn’t watch my screen anymore. When I got back I was dead. Don’t know what happend. Probably didn’t really press pause a lookout or assassin spotted me. Of course it’s my mistake. But it’s so frustrating! Anyway. A lot of work in front of me…

It’s unfortunate, but I think I’m going to have to ‘ABORT CAMPAIGN’. I can’t get Chongqing to load because it can only crash the game.

I’m sure others had to do this before… Right? This will be my first time and it won’t be for any reason that’s my own fault or (in-game, or gameplay-related) circumstance. It’s just the game itself can’t deal…

I’ll likely edit and mention whatever happens.

Edit: Maybe just one. more. try.

Edit 2: Just costs 1/2 of muh :merces: and all me tewlz. Gah! :weary:

Restarting a new campaign, there are 3 locations to choose from. All of them crash while loading.

Did IO changed something in the score screen from freelancer? When I press to see the detailed score the :merces: earned change to an empty “misson rating” square.

Played it yesterday and I didn’t get such thing. I obtained the usual XP amount in this box.

Well… The real fun begins!
Yesterday, I’ve reached level 89 and now 150000 XP are needed to level up. Since I obtain usually between 5000 and 8000 XP per regular level, I’ve to be patient  :fearful:

Never be a fan of grinding. That’s the reason why I’ve abandoned games like Battlefield a while ago (too much grinding). I enjoy Hitman because level mastery is relatively “short”. The release of Freelancer pushed this thing harder…
I’m a completionist on Hitman but I know that challenges like completing 100 campaigns, I decided to leave them off.

I’m admiring those who have reached the top 100 and I’m saying “courage” to the others. The road to Master 100 is long

Freelancer levels 90-100 look like the Myth of Sisyphus to me

Honestly most of the stuff in the 90s is completely useless, you’re not missing much. Although it’s probably not gonna take that long to reach level 100 with casual play now and then, you’d get a level every 2-3 campaigns IIRC (and that’s not even taking into account failed attempts, which still provide some XP)? The 100 campaigns thing though… it’s definitely in the realm of “too much grinding” :x

And - to repeat the message again in the hope that someone at IOI is listening - excessive grinding isn’t fun, which is surely the core thing that a game dev is hoping that the audience takes away from their work. Please don’t go any further in this direction in the WoA or any future games: having a second, unpaid job isn’t something people aspire to.

While I personally don’t have that much of a problem with grinding in a game, I gotta say, I love this description of it.

I am trying to understand why the guard entered combat with me here. While the guard was on alert due to me setting off an explosive on the ground floor, I was completely uncompromised when he went orange.

A few things I see are:

  • The guard started pointing his gun at me while I was using the camera.
  • The guard turned orange while I was crouch running towards him.

Are either of these suspicious actions? I thought both using a camera and crouch running were fine, but maybe I am wrong on this. If anyone has insights on what I did wrong here, that would be appreciated.

I think the guard turned orange, because you’re near the scene of a crime (setting off an explosive) and running.

While it looks like the guard is aiming at you, I don‘t think he was targeting you before turning orange. I suspect he was just in a heightened state of alert.

Using the camera shouldn‘t matter.
