Freelancer - Pre-Release Discussion

It is random as they’re randomly generated when you’re presented with the eight contracts - who the targets are, the objectives, the locations, the item in the reward crate etc. You as the player unknowingly lock them all in when you select the contract you are going to play.

It’s random done in a way that can’t be manipulated by the player.

The other way can’t be manipulated either. You roll the wheel until you either get tired and give up and take what you get, or coincidentally get enough settings that you can live with that you go with it and deal with the rest. You can’t control it either way. That’s what it seemed it would be after the node was first announced. The implication was that every aspect would be randomized, even which crime a syndicate was doing, if you look back at the original image of the dossiers. It seems they’ve toned it down and made it not so randomized after all. Randomly selected, yes, but more selective in what goes where. Which just goes to show that they could program the mode to not have conflicting objectives after all.

I suppose they lessened the randomization of syndicate types to allow for more player choice in what they want to play. If the selection of syndicates wasn’t fixed and you got really unlucky with RNG, you could technically get like 12 syndicates with a similar theme. You wanted to do some sniping? Too bad, all you got were melee focused syndicates.

(Of course, this is based on what I saw in the CTT and the final release may be different, but I don’t think that will change.)

Speaking as someone who played a lot of roguelikes and similar games with randomly generated content, there’s a point where some of the game’s content has to be fixed to allow for some semblance of game design and balance. Fully random content is just unplayable.

As Freelancer is kind of showing a small gap of what 47 and Diana have been doing after destroying Providence and exposing the ICA, I’m kind of hoping IOI continue to elaborate more on this in the next game in the franchise. I don’t mind that IOI have chosen to give the ICA a rest a little and kind of phased them out of the story for the moment.

After seeing how much money Hitman 3 made, I’m really hoping IOI continue with the story in the next game as HITMAN (2016) was kind of a soft reboot whilst also continuing the story, so I don’t think IOI will be going down the route of a full reboot. I think if they were going to do that, they’d have done it in 2016.

Just my opinion obviously.

IOI have briefing teased the future not so long ago

I know you’re working on Project 007 and Hitman is done for the time being, but do you think that whenever you decide to return the gameplay formula for Hitman will evolve?

I think we will do a new take on it. I have no idea when, but it’s probably in going to be a new Hitman game that moves away from the World of Assassination trilogy in some ways. We don’t know when, we don’t know how, we wanted a bit of closure in Hitman 3 and a moment of hope. You can kind of see that maybe we could pick it up again from there and just do a completely new thing from there with a new espionage thing or whatever. But we could also say, ‘Yeah, it’s done.’ We could just do a complete reboot and start over again. Anything is possible. We don’t know yet but it’s in our DNA and Hitman is not going away.

I personally think the pick the story up from post Freelancer and evolve from there with a completely new story.

yer mentally one of the strongest people ive ever seen, having to put up with your own bullshit 24 hours 7 days a week for 3 decades long sounds as exhausting as manually counting every grain of sand in the universe but you’ve not only managed to survive but to thrive. so, uh, props

You have no idea, but thanks for the support and the… implied insult, I guess? :man_shrugging:

which part made it look like an insult?

Nothing I say is bullshit… unless otherwise noted.

Finding out Heisenberg is only 3 decades old (assuming he’s been putting up with his “own bullshit” since birth) is absolutely mindblowing. Between the Cranston-aged pfp and the language when aruging I definitely would’ve set the bar higher haha
I guess that’s a complement?

It’s getting closer to four, but I felt it best to round down. You end up like this when you realize, early on, that nobody really has a damn clue what all of this is about, no matter what they try to convince you of. Once you realize that everybody is equally clueless and they’ve all been bullshitting you all along, and then you’re left to stew in the implications of that for eighteen some odd years, you end up like me.

It’s statefully random. Everything that isn’t dependent on future player choices might as well be rolled instantly.

Since your freelancer game state is uploaded at the start and conclusion of every mission, I imagine this also makes it markedly less painful for IOI to debug.

Whatever any of that means. I’m a simple man, I do not possess a programming degree, nor am I digitally inclined.

I would love they add women assassins in freelancer for the leader and be armed

A small thing I thought of today is I wonder if Freelancer will have its own section in the Destinations tab. I know it’s a game mode, but IO do consider it a map as well. In Hitman 2 the Sniper Assassin missions were put on the Destinations tab. It would be cool to get a large image of the safehouse to admire like the other location images.

Not likely, but possible. They do consider the safehouse at least to be a legit map, so who knows.

Come to think of it I think all assassins I’ve seen in the CTT were men. This would indeed be a good addition.

yeah that would be a great addition

This would be pretty cool if IOI decided to do this!

Like @Heisenberg said, it is considered a new map so who knows?

I’m still hoping for a complete rework of the menu, but the location tab will always be here and I could see the safehouse there. At least to always give the player a quick option to access freelancer.

Currently I think Freelancer will take the place currently occupied by the Elusive Target in the main screen. As the main access point.

Possibly, although it’s permanent home is likely gonna be in the game modes tab, where it will probably push contracts mode over to the right and take the first spot for itself.
