Freelancer - Pre-Release Discussion

Just as a point of order, there isn’t really any score or record in freelancer. There are no stars, no leader boards, no points, and no way of looking historically back at the way a mission was played to see how you did or what objectives you did or didn’t accomplish. The only in-game impact of failing an objective is monetary.

Some players will take that harder than others, but missing 5-10 Merces and having a little red X on the screen momentarily is hardly the game-breaking issue that this thread is making it out to be. It’s annoying, at best.

As always, these are my opinions and I know that they are not shared.

So you mean that “this person isn’t Caruso at all, just a lookalike who happens to have the same name and owns a mansion in Sapienza with a hidden lab too” requires less suspension of disbelief than “the client gave 47 conflicting objectives because he couldn’t make up his mind whether he wanted the target poisoned or shot”?

I mean it may be foreshadowing for a possible mission we may see in a future hitman title (taking place in the past). That, or it implies that 47 got a contract on Alexander after the events of the last yardbird and killed him after he was in custody offscreen. It doesn’t necessarily break continuity in any way, it’s just something we never saw as the player.

Since it was implied that he was caught later after the events of that mission, possibly he was in prison when 47 killed him? That could imply that he was possibly meant to be the original target of “Crime and Punishment” and the target was changed mid development, or that it was / can be an entirely different mission.

That may have been the context for why Vidal was asking Diana questions, but that specific one includes no language to explicitly state that she wants to know if Diana was responsible for killing Kovak. Indeed, even before the release of H2, well before they began the voice work on H3, so I don’t see how there could be a discrepancy here, they specifically made it so that Kovak was now more famous for being the orchestrator of the wedding massacre than the massacre itself. Everyone knows Kovak did it, or at least arranged to have it done. So Vidal simply dropping kovak’s name can very easily be interpreted as her asking if Diana was involved in the assassination that made Kovak infamous. Unless Kovak was going to be included somewhere in H3 and dropped at the last second (no files to indicate such), and the amount of work that went into creating the news story that specifies what happened to him, I don’t see how anybody overlooked that when making a quick Q&A between Vidal and Diana.

No wonder it’s seemed quiet from you lately. That is an honor; I’ve never had anyone admit to just giving up altogether before.

Not an actual in-game record, perhaps, but still part of the record. It happened. Plus, not seeing that full payout because an objective was filled is it’s own record, because they Merces total would be more full, that item purchased sooner, gameplay affected in the long run because of it. We should not be subjected to an official failure because of a situation that is circumstantial my impossible no matter what we do. If we fail because we fail, or don’t have the money yet to get an item we need to succeed, or don’t bring the right item with us, or miss our chance to perform a particular task, things like that are acceptable. That’s on us, our personal failures, we can cope with those and move on. Ones where you have to choose between two things, and one will show as failed simply because you chose the other is unacceptable.

Well, it happens, and will continue to happen. Both in game and in real life, unfortunately.

It’s a bug, not a feature. Wait, it’s an unintended side effect of a feature. Wait no. It’s a feature, not a bug. Nailed it!

- IOI… probably.

I mean, “ignore this person altogether except in the context of them seeing you commit an illegal action.” Do you think Caruso’s villa just sat there empty until the end of time after he died? Somebody bought it, moved in, the lab is still working, hell there’s no reason Ether didn’t try to keep the work going down there, which was what they were planning to do if Francesca had to kill him anyway. In Freelancer, he’s just a wondering NPC that you know you killed; ignore what he looks like and go after your target. Having to choose between two different objectives that inherently means you have failed the other, with no choice in the matter, is a greater concern, yes.

Fortunately, as a game, it can be reprogrammed, patched, and corrected.

Well, it sounds like IOI are leaning into it, rather than resolving it, so it’s unlikely to change for the initial release of the mode at least. Maybe after player feedback starts rolling in (not test feedback, but actual released mode feedback) they’ll consider changing it for the players who don’t like the way it works. Time will tell.

This I have hope for, and since the issue was even pointed out in one of the official articles reviewing the CTT, they’ll definitely be paying attention to that feedback.

Interesting thing I’ve noticed.

Photo from the original Freelancer (How to Play) trailer stating syndicates have ICA approval to be eliminated. Everyone pointed out, this is unusual considering Freelancer appears to be after the H3 epilogue.

Photo from recent Freelancer launch trailer.

IOI have removed any reference of the ICA taking on board fan feedback, which now ties it more together with Diana and 47 working in partnership without the ICA.

Thanks IOI for listening

Looks like Caruso was so freaked out by the possibility of his mother coming back as a ghost, he actually became one himself :ghost:

Good. I didn’t like the implication that the ICA was still around/ being rebooted; it undermined the entire ending to H3 and its themes.

As I mentioned back in November, a good way to make nothing matter in a series is claiming you’ve killed X off and then bring it back later, moreso if it’s just a short period of time.

This ties into my recent post and adds more concrete evidence to show that Freelancer is in fact set post H3 epilogue

That had already been confirmed, the issue was why the ICA was being mentioned.

Considering it’s happened to ICA twice in series history as part of the story, it would make sense for it to come back, and unless we want to spend the rest of the series playing like how we will in this mode, it needs to come back at some point.

Yes, but this time was much more definite, as in, “the entire world knows the ICA exists”. Has more impact, y’know. And again, doesn’t stop it feeling like a cop-out or undermining H3’s ending.

So basically the blog post is IO saying they saw some of the discussions on here from particular users demanding that unachievable objectives be changed/declaring them currently broken and this is IO turning around and saying “no”.

Just means they’ll be able to hide even better behind the legend of a boogeyman that everyone already thinks is gone. Besides, that should never have been part of the story in the first place, and it wasn’t really part of H3’s ending, it was simply a means to an end. 47 and Diana can’t do this on their own forever, they need an organization that will carry on after they’re gone, enforcing their ideals, and Diana had her life staked in ICA; it makes sense she’d bring it back under new founding principles. Plus, ICA is so integral to the franchise lore that they can’t really separate it, any more than Resident Evil has been able to ditch Umbrella, and thank goodness. Unless we’re going to forever be killing low-level dregs before slowly working our way up to head honchos and no longer get the big name hits like we have throughout the series, where the leg work has been done for us and all we have to do is infiltrate and kill, ICA must return.

More like saying “we don’t feel like it right now. Maybe we’ll do it if you all keep whining about it after it’s out, but we’re gonna sit and wait and hope you enjoy it so much that you forget about it.”

Something something, your work as a freelancer, something something, got you noticed, something something, go kill 6 heads of state.

It would be pretty excruciating to add from a developer’s point of view, especially since you could be able to complete some of the objectives after going into a mission and collecting items, which the system your proposing would not be able to effectively predict.

The only thing built-in to Freelancer with regard to 47 “doing things” is the pre-rendered cutscenes for going in between syndicate missions (which vary on the type). There are some interactions you can do at the safehouse. But nothing with dynamic information like newspapers or TV broadcasts.
