Game News Thread

Supposedly being the key word. Nothing is actually known about it, other than the Assassin’s insignia made of wicker and dangling from a tree in a forest, and the codename.

So, not an Assassin’s Creed game, then.

I know the three are not the same and don’t occupy the same time periods or continents, but my point being that a game based on one of the three most well-known indigenous peoples who occupied territory south of what we now think of as the US border is what most people are going for when referring to the idea. Personally, I’d prefer the Incas; set the whole thing thoroughly in South America.

I’m not actually sick of it, and I love the Isu concept and their involvement (the only part I love more is the Animus itself). I just wish they’d go back to being more of a slowly unraveled mystery rather than being part of the story from practically start to finish, and tone down the overtly supernatural elements that have been commonplace of late. The fact that they were further into the past and helped inspire legends as a result was understandable for the last four games, but Shadows is going to be too close to recent times for that to be reasonable; we can’t be having Inuyasha-style Youkai running around Japan a mere five hundred years ago and blame it on the Precursors.

But it’s not already Assassin’s Creed in feudal Japan. No Animus, no Isu, no Assassins, no Templars? It’s like comparing Coco Krispies to Cocoa Pebbles - they’re the same, but they’re not the same.

The Incas are based, I would actually like to see the Incas explored. The Aztec and Mayas already have something but beyond one of the S16 glyphs depicting Machu Picchu, the connection has never been explored in broad detail.

I am much more a fan of the Templar/Assassin war, the actual thing the game’s were about once upon a time, a long time ago. In an Animus far, far away.

Yes they can, watch as you cut down Oni in the wilds outside of Kyoto in order to get an Isu katana named Masamune that will shoot lightning ever five hits. This was actually documented in the Tale of Genji, he actually first used it against the weak points of the Giant Attack Crab for massive damage so you can’t actually say it is impossible or “not historically accurate or remotely plausible in the slightest”

And RE: Village also has none of those things and that didn’t stop you from comparing it to Hexe.

The Isu always had a presence even then, it was just more subtle, which is what I want a return to.

Oh, I didn’t know there was such a tale so recently. Ok then, the appearance of supernatural/superscience beings or events that are based on specific tales, I can understand, but we don’t need to see legendary animals left and right unless it can be solely chalked up to a quirk of the Animus

But I didn’t say it was the same as Assassin’s Creed with witches. I just said AC wouldn’t be able to do horror as well and the witches wouldn’t be as interesting. Beyond that, the two stories of witches would be nothing alike, but I’d be less interested in spooky witches from one game than the other and more interested in historical fiction during an action/adventure/exploration tale.

That is because I was joking, Heisenberg. The Tale of Genji is a historically accurate piece of semi-biography about a courtier in the Heian age. It was turned into a bog standard RPG game around the mid 2000s, despite being based on a novel that firmly existed in real life the developers added shit like giant crab enemies to the game then showed it off at E3.

I am mocking Ubisoft most likely doing the same sort of shit.

Sorry, I know only the most basic of history and folktales of foreign countries beyond significant wars. I’m interested in more, but have poor resources beyond the basics provided online. If I had the time and money I’d take real history courses around the world regarding the countries I’m most interested in.

At any rate, Ubisoft at least has a built-in gimmick to allow such weird changes to exist.

I’d be great but I think an AC there would be much more fictional than the previous games already were.
Correct me if I am wrong but we don’t know a single specific person from there and only very roughly the mythology.

The only time they could base their game on historical known events is the Spanish conquest of the Aztecs in 1500ish. Though to be fair that is a very fitting conflict for an AC game.

The Incas? We know plenty about the Incas, we know as much roughly as we do the Maya and the Aztecs. The Inca people just don’t command as much attention as the Aztecs nor the mystique of the Mayans so they tend to get overlooked by popular culture.

The Incas have a mythology that is understood just as much as the other major Pre-Colombians and follows similar patterns to them. That being veneration of a sun god, human sacrifice and grand ceremonies.

We also have pretty comprehensive accounts of the Incas historically as well. Just because the standard Spanish policy was to wipe out culture and history doesn’t mean there were people who didn’t make accounts of what they could learn.

That is because Ubisoft are aware of it AC has actually dabbled in using the siege of Tenochtitlan and the conquest of the Aztecs as a historical backdrop before in spin-offs but nothing has ever been fully realised in a main entry as of yet.

From what I’ve heard, Codename Red /Shadows has been billed as an RPG in line with the Origins trilogy.

Codename Hexe is supposedly something new for the series, either in tone, gameplay, or both.

And it’s kiiind of been revealed that Ubi Bordeaux (behind the recent gameplay-throwback Mirage) is working on another AC game, potentially “return to roots” again given the fan acclaim for its return.
(They’ve teased potential talks of more AC and some new job listings literally mention a “next AC game”)

I hope it´s just a regular proper port, and not some kind of DE/remaster/remake. If I can finally experience this game, I wanna do so with its original visuals intact and without excesive HW requirements. I assume this will be the case and that they are coming off of the PS5/PS4 re-release.

DBD DND DLC next month!

Also, they made a little roguelite shooter game, stealth released it today, and you can claim a free Steam Code for it (while supplies last) by linking your steam acct to their BHVR website.

For a second I thought you meant Hexen and got all excited… It’s been so long since I’ve played that one!

I mean of course it was, everything is some time ago for a venerable elder like you. I mean the first Hexen/Heretic game came out thirty years ago and the last game in the series came out the same year I was born and I am twenty six this year.

But it will be difficult for Ubisoft to make Hexen III given Raven are owned by MS-ABK since Raven were bought by Activision to become a COD mill over a decade or so ago. So even if they did make a new one it would most likely be an MS exclusive.

Of course the last MS company that made a long belated sequel to a prominent cult shooter was Arkane Austin with Prey (2017) I don’t think you should be wishing for that Hexen revival given what just happened to Arkane Austin.

I found Eivor not very sympathic, so we (flatmate and me) could never really get into the story. Was worse with Basim because we knew from Valhalla he is a dick and then we had to play him.

Now this two-character setup makes sure you are not able to relate to “your character” because in the worst case half of the game you have to adapt a playstyle that is less comfortable than the other. That was our issue with Aya as well, but she did not have much playtime luckily and a good bunch of that was marine fights which were actually fun to me.

I think it would have been better if you could play only one of them and adapt to their strong/weak sides.

So, although we lack gameplay footage, I’d I’m reading between the lines right, the male character (supposedly a real-life man from Africa who became the first such samurai in Japan) will be played more like the kill-everything-in-sight protagonists of the RPG games, and the female character (supposedly the fictional daughter of a real-life historical figure of the era) will be a ninja who will play more in line with the traditional Assassin’s Creed protagonists; stealthy, hooded, and using the hidden blade. This will allow the players to use both styles in the same game, assuming that choosing between the two characters is completely optional and no scripted or required switches between them for completion’s sake. I’m interested.

I know the background of Yasuke, but we don’t know just yet that that’s actually the Yasuke and not just a very similar substitute with a very similar name, keeping the historical guy separate from this character. Or if, indeed, we are actually playing as a fictionalized version of a historical character instead of just interacting with them. As far as I’ve seen and heard, Ubisoft hasn’t come out and confirmed that one way or another yet.
