Currently the UK Labour Party has been holding a 20 point lead in polling averages and is expected to win somewhere between 370-460 seats if polling is even slightly accurate. Meaning most likely Keir Starmer will be the next Prime Minister after these elections. Obviously polls can still move from now till July which will also influence the amount of seats won.

Unless polls narrow significantly from now till July most likely the UK Conservative Party will probably lose over half its MP’s if not more. Currently they are estimated to win between 80-160 seats. Which if played out on election day would be the worst result for the party since the 1997 and 2001 Labour landslides under Tony Blair. Or if they fall further than 160 seats going all the way back to 1906 when the Conservative Party only won 131 seats. If they fall below even 130 which some seat projections say may occur it would be the worst result in the party’s entire history since it formed in 1834.

Now it’s from the ICJ:

Born from South Africa continued effort to the court to request a ceasefire/suspension of operations due to alleged genocidal intent from Israel.

They are born from Art. 41 of the Statute of the ICJ :

  1. The Court shall have the power to indicate, if it considers that circumstances so require, any provisional measures which ought to be taken to preserve the respective rights of either party.

The court continues on its stand (to be honest there is nothing new in today order, it’s a modification of the previous, due to further probe by South Africa) that:

  • To the allegation of genocide, and the call for a ceasefire:
    • No genocidal intent is provably visible from the Israeli state
    • That Israel primary goal in the war is legitimate
    • Ceasefire under those circumstance is not of the court jurisdiction
  • But
    • Israel has obligations under the Genocide Convention
    • The court is legitimate to monitor and demand the respect of it through provisional measure, with two main contentions:
      • The humanitarian condition are worsening due to the current operations, and did so at every update of the court on this case
      • Potential irreparable prejudice are possible to South Africa claim if circumstances continue (ie: destruction of potential proof of the alleged genocide)
    • So the court demands :
      • Israel halts its operation in Rafah
      • Israel maintain the Rafah crossing open (personnal note: not “reopen it” as frequently said, Egypt closed it, but Egypt is not a party of the case, it’s more of a legal assurance than anything)
      • Israel ensure access to Gaza for any fact-finding, inquiries,… for the good proceeding of the South African case
      • Israel submit a report of the actions made toward those goals in a month time
  • The court also continues to worry and demand the release of the hostages, but anything more is not of its jurisdiction, so cannot order it

Here is the document (operative order item 57, on page 16 to 18): https://www.icj-cij.org/sites/default/files/case-related/192/192-20240524-ord-01-00-en.pdf

Bonus, as a companion to the rest of the week news, quoting from UN News:

What’s the difference between the ICJ and the ICC?

There is frequent confusion between the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Both courts have open cases against Israel related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The simplest way to explain the difference is that ICJ cases involve countries, and the ICC is a criminal court, which brings cases against individuals for war crimes or crimes against humanity. While the ICJ is an organ of the United Nations, the ICC is legally independent of the UN, although it is endorsed by the General Assembly.

The ICJ is currently considering South Africa’s accusations that Israel is violating the Genocide Convention.

On Monday, the ICC sought arrest warrants related to possible war crimes against three Hamas leaders and Israel’s Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. The request for the warrants are now being considered by the court’s judges.

"He called me up and said, 'You know, what we need to do is build a sub that can dive to [Titanic-level depths] repeatedly and safely and demonstrate to the world that you guys can do that, and that Titan was a contraption,

I mean, I don’t quite know what he’s trying to accomplish here. People have been diving down to the Titanic wreckage in submersibles since the mid-80s. James Cameron, who was all over the news after he commented on the Titan disaster, has himself gone down to investigate the wreckage in submersibles multiple times. He even designed one himself to go even deeper into the Marianas trench. Deepwater submersible diving isn’t a new thing, what made the Titan different was that it moved away from a compact titanium core designed for 2 or so people max, and used carbon fibre to build a bigger interior to fit more people (tourists). Obviously, it wound up being a failure, but this current billionaire in question doesn’t seem to be building another tourist vessel. He’s just designing a deepwater submersible capable of what many other submersibles already are. Visiting the Titanic wreckage really isn’t that crazy of a thing, there had never been a single incident in 40 years prior to the Titan implosion (because they were all made with titanium cores, which this will presumably be as well). So this guy must just be trying to generate press or attention.

Pardon the crudeness of this comment, but in essence, what they’re doing is jacking off with - and to - their own money, knowing the rest of us are watching with disgust, and that turns them on more, and so they start jacking a little bit faster and a little bit harder. That’s all this is when you really get down to it.

According to accounts shared with ICC officials, [former Mossad Director Cohen] is alleged to have told her: “You should help us and let us take care of you. You don’t want to be getting into things that could compromise your security or that of your family.”
