Last year was the first calendar year that average temperatures surpassed the 2015 Paris accord target of limiting warming since pre-industrial times to well under 2C and preferably to 1.5C. The world is on track for a temperature rise of up to 2.9C above pre-industrial levels, according to a UN report.

I doubt there’ll be anything definitive. I’m not certain what the endgame is, but I believe NATO is stronger than any single individual, even one as unpredictably tumultuous as Trump.
Most Greenlanders aspire to independence, and America and Denmark have skin in the game. Both have a significant military presence there. Realistically, I suspect Trump’s batty rhetoric will eventually evolve into a new agreement on defence and resource-sharing, with America supporting attempts by Greenland for full autonomy to secure lucrative arrangements and influence.

I frequently think that one of the most exhausting part of talking about the rise of fascism are the nazis. And how it’s frequently the one measure. Even at their time they were considered weird and idiosyncratic by all the other fascists.
But the actual structure and ideology of fascism, the day to day politics can be much more “normal” looking. The one of Mussolini, Franco, and a bunch more.
So warning about them arriving back is an headache.
And trying to explain that it’s a monstrous and incompetent way to do lead a nation even though it might not automatically mean “wars of conquest, genocides, or world war” is ineffective. Too many time I even saw it be welcomed. Taken as “nothing too bad then, stick it to them, worth it”.
And then you have places so disordered, unemphatic, and disinhibited that they just blurt the worst accidentally.

In a statement, the White House said the commutation will enable Peltier to spend his remaining days in home confinement, “but will not pardon him for his underlying crimes.”
Peltier’s daughter, Kathy Peltier, said she was in shock after learning what Biden had done after past presidential requests for clemency were unsuccessful.
“I’m just thankful that he had the balls and the guts to do it,” she said of Biden’s decision.
The family of one of the two agents fatally shot, Jack Coler, expressed frustration on Monday, arguing that a parole board rejection of supervised release in June was based on a sincere review of the case.
“The Coler family is frustrated and very angry after years of fighting to keep Peltier incarcerated,” it said. "The board decided against granting Peltier parole. This fact makes President Biden’s decision for a last-minute commutation more surprising and extremely disappointing.”
In a statement provided by the NDN Collective, an Indigenous-led advocacy organization, Peltier said he was ready to leave prison.
“It’s finally over — I’m going home,” Peltier said. “I want to show the world I’m a good person with a good heart.”
The U.S. Parole Commission in July denied Peltier’s latest bid for release, which left his fate in the hands of Biden. Peltier has long maintained his innocence, and his commutation has drawn fierce opposition from members of law enforcement who contend that his two consecutive life sentences are just in the fatal shootings of FBI agents Coler and Ron Williams in 1975 in South Dakota.
Christopher Wray, who became FBI director in 2017 before he retired Monday as President Donald Trump took office for his second term, had tried to persuade Biden not to commute Peltier’s sentence, arguing in a letter this month that it would be “wholly unjustified and would be an affront to the rule of law.”
“Mr. President, I urge you in the strongest terms possible: Do not pardon Leonard Peltier or cut his sentence short,” Wray wrote.
Biden’s commutation announcement came just minutes before Trump’s inauguration. Trump did not act on Peltier’s clemency request during his first term, and other presidents, Democrats and Republicans alike, also declined to intervene.
In a statement, the attorney who advocated for Peltier’s parole praised the outgoing president.
“President Biden took an enormous step toward healing and reconciliation with the Native American people in this country," said the attorney, Kevin Sharp. "It took nearly 50 years to acknowledge the injustice of Leonard Peltier’s conviction and continued incarceration, but with the President’s act of mercy Leonard can finally return to his reservation and live out his remaining days.”
Peltier told NBC News in 2022 that he wasn’t interested in a presidential pardon because it would be granted for a crime he insists he is innocent of. Instead, he said, he wanted the opportunity to get out of prison and get a new trial.
“I would love to go home,” Peltier said by phone from the Federal Correctional Complex Coleman in Florida. “My family wants to take care of me. My tribe wants to take care of me.”
Over the decades, human rights and faith leaders, including Pope Francis and the Dalai Lama, and Nobel Peace Prize recipients such as Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu, have backed Peltier’s release.
Peltier’s story was exposed to MTV viewers in the 1990s in the video for Rage Against the Machine’s, “Freedom,” a breakout that helped the now-defunct alternative rock band become a voice for progressive causes and marginalized people.
On Monday, band cofounder Tom Morello rejoiced and rededicated the song to Peltier, saying on X, “Leonard has become a friend over the years and I am so glad at 80 years old and in poor health he will be able to spend his remaining years with family and friends.”
Nick Tilsen, CEO of the NDN Collective, said Peltier’s conviction was emblematic of the struggle between Native Americans and the federal government, particularly on Indigenous lands.
“Leonard Peltier’s liberation is our liberation — we will honor him by bringing him back to his homelands to live out the rest of his days surrounded by loved ones, healing, and reconnecting with his land and culture,” Tilsen said in a statement.
Kathy Peltier said she last saw her father in prison before the start of the Covid pandemic. She said the family is now “crying tears of joy” to know that he will be able to return to them and see his dozen great-grandchildren and all the people who supported him for decades.
“It’s a relief,” Kathy Peltier said. “We’ll actually be able to hug him, really hug him, and sit around for hours and not have a time limit and talk. There’s so much he’s missed out on.”

Here’s an example of behaviour that lacks intellectual maturity: generalising about everyone who disagrees with you and making blanket moral judgments about their character. Using a public forum as a space to vent or pick fights, like a personal blog, is counterproductive and doesn’t contribute to meaningful or productive discourse.

The thing is, the border is already being closed at El Paso, people already being turned back or detained.
Any media owned by anyone willing to cooperate with Trump, which is most of them, is already flagging and deleting posts that contain any criticism against him or republicans in general, including X, Facebook, and the newly reinstated TikTok.
The people he has appointed to fulfill cabinet positions and heads of government agencies have already said they will go after his political enemies, turn away any efforts to investigate wrongdoing on his behalf or anyone working for him, and they include people that have dismissed vaccines as hoax science, someone who has a history of denying the J6 riot, a drunken frat boy in his 40s who hates Muslims and likes assaulting women, and the richest man on earth who is intent on dismantling any kind of limit placed on him by society because he views himself as a superior specimen.
And all of that is without even getting to the man himself. A convicted felon. Found liable for defamation which could only have been concluded if the jury in the case was convinced that he sexually assaulted the accuser (which the judge explicitly said was basically the same as raping her), so he is by definition then a rapist. Defrauds his workers, defrauds his businesses, defrauds his investors, defrauds the government. Just yesterday he defrauded countless supporters of millions of dollars on his cryptocurrency venture.
Has the social skills of an elementary schooler. Is showing signs of various forms of cognitive failure as witnessed by hundreds of professionals. No experience in politics prior to his first term. Left the country in a worse state socially, economically and globally when he was voted out. Racist and sexist comments on a constant basis (regularly used the word “unintelligent” to refer to Black people, the word “nasty” to refer to women). Takes credit for things he has nothing to do with in order to boost his self image. Must respond with insults and personal attacks whenever criticized on any subject, betraying a very thin skin. Openly admitted to taking classified documents that did not belong to him and refusing to return them when asked politely and told forcefully by the government, and is confirmed to have shared information about said documents with people who were not authorized to hear it, and extreme likelihood that enemies of our country have obtained some of that information.
Nothing about this man, nor any of the people he has surrounded himself with, shows that he or they are qualified to hold any public office position. And that’s really all that matters when one gets down to it; he is not qualified to have that kind of power. No matter what your thoughts or feelings on the Democratic Party - who are indeed their own brand of corrupt failures, but nowhere at all on the same level as this man - no matter what your position is, there is absolutely no reason on God’s earth why any intelligent, rational, unbiased person should cast a vote for that man, not in any way, shape, form, manner, degree, context or capacity.

The forum is indeed a form of social media, but it is distinct from personal social media feeds such X, Instagram, etc
It is not a “follow me or don’t” situation but rather collective topics and discussions. Thus to incurs different responsibilities and expectations.
This is pretty well established.
You expect people to stay on topic in a forum thread as a courtesy to other people reading it.
You do not tell people to not post about stuff you don’t care about on their Bluesky/Tumblr etc
You also dont start fights on unrelated topics in the comments of other people’s Facebook posts.
In this case, there are plenty of informed and interesting things to discuss about the events taking place. The reaponses from different media, the legal implications of Trump’s bizarre list of promises, etc
Whats not of interest to readers in general is repeated statements that someone has an opinion repeated with variants of gifs, memes, and profanity.

I am not interested in meaningful or productive discourse with Trump supporters, because they are impervious to both of those things. This is a cultist mentality, there is not good justification they have for supporting him, and they’ll never change their mind. They’re completely immune to reason, to facts, to ways of thinking that aren’t bigoted or racist.
Supporting Donald Trump makes you a Bad Person. I will gladly tell people that to their faces if they openly admit to supporting him.

Honestly, I’ll say most political discussions here are civil, entertaining and enlightening, admittedly partially since there are rarely Trump supporters on it. IIRC, Naz doesn’t often participate on this trend and the few times we conversed, things got a little bit heated. It was only when our mutual friend Quinn called him up when this thread got hostile.
I talked about January 6th enough. These people voted a man who not only refuses to apologise for it, not only actively celebrates it, but does this:
What is stopping Trump from sending another mob in 2028 if Vance loses? Not only does he have the power to pardon any his henchmen, Americans have proven they will forgive and gladly vote Republicans in no matter what atrocities they commit. Trump supporters knew what it would mean and they happily voted for him.
I don’t understand why we are collectively obligated to mollycoddle Trump supporters for their distinct lack of values and perpetual victimhood complex.

I dont think how one random forum member claims to have voted is ever going to warrant being news or elevant to news.
Nor do I think the opinion that it was a bad choice, because another forum member days so, is going to be news or relevant to news.
If I cared about that I would follow them on personal social media feeds.
There are a lot of widely interesting and relevant observations and substantial opinions people can give on a lot of topics right now.
- Concern that Trump seems to think he will be granted Dictator powers to overrule Congress, courts and the Constitution
- How the ADL, who once came for Grandpa Boris on Rugrats, tried to explain away Elon’s Nazi salute
- What are the real risks and options for immigrants, trans people, people who might need abortions, etc in the next four years
- What events can forseeably occur as standard part (like more Supreme Court appointments)
Basically literally everything except declaring that people would rather the discussion just be about them.
