Yes, all that is well and good, and yes, those comments would have gotten anyone fired from that spot, but I am telling you, she would have been fired anyway even if she hadn’t said it. It was already gonna happen. Look at the number of women and non-white people removed from positions since the start of this administration. They can’t come right out and fire everyone like that from every position even though they want to, because then the backlash even from political allies would be too much.
The Gipper on tariffs. Take notes, Donald.
I never actually heard Reagan speak until now. His voice actually sounds quite pleasant.
Too bad it’s the only pleasant thing about that jackoff.
He was “The Great Communicator” for a reason, I mean he was an actor after all.
Sadly it was his only skill. In a lot of ways he was very much defined the sort of Trumo style of ruling. Know nothing, do little and leavy the policy in the hands of vested corporate interest, unqualified thought leaders and ghoulish think tanks.
You forgot, sowing further seeds of mistrust and resentment among the masses. The utter hatred of everyone needing social assistance spread because of the guy’s message.
My naïveté might be getting a bit less cute now, but could someone give a history lesson on why Reagan sucks?
You can find plenty of Reagan bashing online but I need to take a minute to pimp the Cody showdy. Note each of those two highlighted words is a part of a two part video.
If you don’t have the three or so hours to spare watching both parts then here is a brief list from Cracked that can serve as a brief primer.
The short version? Everything Republicans, right-wingers, conservatives, anyone of that ilk, everything they do and believe now can be traced back to Ronald Reagan, at least in the modern era.
It’s mostly the financial stuff he implemented, from Trickle-Down Economics to the concept of Welfare Queens and everything related to them. He’s the reason American’s wealth gap has continued to widen for the last 45 years, why capitalism has become more and more unchecked, why republicans have instituted no policies other than cutting taxes for the rich in all that time, and why the education of average Americans has continued to go down consistently.
This is what led to the elections of Bush, W. Bush and Trump after him, each one getting dumber, each one getting more cruel, each one getting more support from the wealthy (on both sides of the political aisle) and the stupid. That’s what Reagan did.
The sad thing is, they can thank him for what they are now, and he’s been seen as a hero by them for decades, but todays’s republicans are so extreme, have gone so much farther than even he would have been comfortable with, that if he came back now, he’d try to get them to see reason again, but they are so bad now (because of what he set in motion) they’d label him RINO Reagan and turn on him immediately.
Huh. Credit where credit’s due…
The perils of being so iconic that you’re instantly recognisable by your haircut.
To be fair, if I had cameras pointing at me, I would probably hide my face too, but I’m not a US Governor nor running in 2028. This does not look presidential, Gretch. If you’re going to be stuck in the White House with the senile orange insurrectionist, the least you could do is keep your head up and strut. We need Veronica Sawyer, not Laney Boggs.
Well, Whitmer is cooked for 2028. Unless she does something really awesome in the next 3 years, Beshear’s my man. Honestly, it really sucks that her Where’s Waldo impression, Biden’s one bad debate and Kamala being a talking black woman killed their political careers, while Trump, Vance and their entire worthless party completely get away with whitewashing all these:
I would say Whitmer should consider a Senate run next year, but Mallory McMorrow’s the frontrunner for now and she’s really cool. Maybe she’ll be our first female President.
It is worth nothing Whitmer is doing this because those reporters ambushed her and photographing her without her consent. She had organised a private meeting with Trump to discuss the impact his dumb tariffs were having on her state and Trump organised the press conference without her knowing.
Harris might have passed him over as her running mate, but some people still want to hold Josh Shapiro’s feet to the fire.
Back on Gretch, at least the White House visit is bearing fruit, the old bastard seems to like her now. Maybe this will all be worth it if Trump endorses her over Vance in 2028.
“I assume the lakes are all interconnected, right, so at some point they’re going to be in the other lakes, and so we’re going to work hard on that,” Trump said. “I spoke with the Army Corps of Engineers and they have a method — it’s a pretty gruesome method, but it’s a method— and I think they know what to do, so we’re going to work on that very hard.”
“It’s sort of a bipartisan thing, when you get right down to it. It’s a very expensive thing, actually. It cost a lot. I looked at the numbers, ‘I said, well…’ But, we have to save Lake Michigan, because these fish, that they eat everything in the way — including the other fish. They eat everything. Are people endangered by the fish?”
And McMorrow’s opponent is probably going to be this MAGA clown who already lost to Slotkin last year.
I like her odds.
Get the lettuce out, lads!
I’m sure there’s nothing sinister about her referring to “the elite” without further clarification beyond a vague gesture to the “deep state” (ie public servants).
this must be the fifth or sixth Gab clone right? not sure if we really need any more, since twitter actively boosts nazi accounts now
The UK Supreme Court has ruled that in the 2010 equality act, trans women are not women, and that only biological sex matters. JK Rowling is celebrating and even getting on the cover of the vile Daily Mail for it. The SNP First Minister is being pressured to apologise and essentially grovel for their gender recognition bill in 2022 which was famously blocked by the UK government, sparking a constitutional crisis.
This is a victory for the TERFs. Even though that arguably all it has done is make organisations, like the NHS, question how much they can accomodate trans people, with some calling for the NHS to basically never allow concessions for trans people whatsoever. Not to mention the lame answer of what facilities trans people should use boiling down to “well, their campaigners should ask for third person spaces instead.” And we have a cowardly Labour government who has seemingly decided to give up on trans people, instead going down their route of being a soft right wing government, and refusing to really say much of the matter. I don’t believe Keir Starmer has said anything about this ruling.
There is some hope. The SNP government has stated they will be talking to Westminster about the ramifications of this bill. And one civil servant who was part of the drafting of the 2010 equalities bill argues the when the bill was drafted, the lines about women were always intended to be inclusive of trans women as well, not exclusive.
It’s bad news, and with this in the wake of Trumps’ presidency, marks what feels like a moving wave against trans people. In the UK, the tabloids love to print stories they can about trans women being dangerous and predators. Incredibly inflammatory.
I just hope things can improve eventually. There are currently 29 protests to be held in UK cities across the country over the Easter weekend against this ruling, I’m hoping that they get good turnouts.
: (
He probably won’t, all of those New Labour leftovers are two-faced.
But correct me if I am wrong but doesn’t the fact that the parliament have precedent over legislature mean that parliament can just ignore the ruling? Or am I simply misunderstanding the Westminster System.
Which parliament, Westminster or Holyrood? I really don’t know either way frankly, I’m not very sure how much power our supreme court holds, and how it fits in with the House of Commons, the House of Lords, or with the devolved parliaments. But it’s looking like Labour will quietly accept this and move on. Whereas my hope is that the SNP are more willing to fight this.
I mean you answered your own question.
I am too lazy to look it up either but in my country you can just ignore the high court’s rulings until they rule in your party’s favour in which case it is super binding.
Luckily they can’t make changes to the constitution. No, the consitution says we trust the general public to make those super important decisions.
