I saw Coyote vs Acme with my dad. Both thought it was great, very funny, I hope it does well considering the film’s tumultuous history.

I saw Resident Evil. Great movie, really fun time. Although I will say that if you go wanting an adaptation of RE2 or 3, you will be disappointed. This is mostly it’s own thing. But it is still a great time. I really want to see Weapons now.

I think it’s the best Resident Evil movie made untill now. The only good reason to watch the first movies was Milla Jovovich. The previous one was a parody of Resident Evil. And the Netflix series … better to not talk about

I really enjoyed Resident Evil and on a technical level it’s clearly the superior piece of craftsmanship. The film felt like playing the games, all from how it goes from areas to areas, exploring, scurrying for items, ammo. There where some cool Easter eggs, from the S.T.A.R.S gun, first add spray, shotgun shell box, green herb and a type writer. There are probably some more I missed.

It was a very unnerving experience, with some well crafted jump scares, one literally made me jump in my chair, to those who know, it’s involves an old man in a house.

It’s also extremely funny, it’s a horror comedy. This might be my biggest gripe with the film as a whole, i love the main character, his constant moaning, swearing and overall out of luck personality. He’s a character who is so unprepared and out of his element, but still manages to make it through. Just like the players.

The thing that annoys me is that the majority of characters are all played for laughs, they act and talk like they are in a comedy. It’s fun sure and it helps lighten up the tension.

There is a scene that really annoyed me, it involves the main character getting picked up by two umbrella employees, one baffoon and another who clearly is trained for such an event. They make the trip into the city by car, they see a person running from a horde of “zombies “, at this point we know that the main character is transporting the antidote to the last functional lab in the city, that it’s the umbrella employees only priority to get it to safety. What does the badass solider do? Jump out of the car to kill them, walk out of frame into a pitch black underpass. Where she of course dies. There was no logical reason why she would abandon her mission. They could have come up with something that logically would force her to leave the car.

There where some small annoyance, nothing that has any effect on the film quality. No Umbrella corp. logo, not classic t-virus zombies, more a G and T-Virus mix, not being set in the 90’s.

Oh sure, without a doubt. But I understand why some fans may feel disappointed than a Resident Evil movie is very much it’s own thing, and taking bits and bobs from various RE games, rather than being an adaptation of an existing RE story, and not feature any RE characters in it.

What did you think of the ending? I really don’t like the ending. I don’t even mind the idea that the main character loses in the end, but it does feel infuriating when it comes down to a bunch of incredibly idiotic scientists.

That surprised me, it’s such an iconic RE visual, I’m surprised they didn’t have that anywhere, even on just a billboard or something. I feel like Raccoon City is incomplete without the “Welcome to Raccoon City: Home of Umbrella” sign.

I liked it, it was a nice twist and to be honest I wouldn’t want try and stab him either.

If they continue and make a sequel, I hope it’s just another story running parallel to the first film. Our main character could function as a final boss.

Make a couple of sequel, give each film to an eccentric film makers.

It doesn’t change anything when it comes to quality or craftmanship. Yet it does add value to my experience, hell if’s 80% of the reason I love the six original films, due to heavy Umbrella iconography.

That’s the only reason that’s needed. It’s why they manage, one way or another, to connect back to Umbrella in every game even 20 years after it officially disbanded: Umbrella _is_ Resident Evil.

I watched the 1998 film _Meet Joe Black_ for the first time, and I had avoided watching it mainly because I assumed it was going to be bad. I was so wrong! Brad Pitt really held his own with legend Anthony Hopkins. The movie is quite long, but it is by far my favorite film about the grim reaper (so far) and acceptance of death. Claire Forlani is so beautiful too.

Finally saw Christopher Nolan’s " **The Odyssey"** and I liked it a lot, but it’s some of Nolan’s weakest work.

It feels way too long both in totality and in the moments. Multiple scenes felt like they more than outlived their welcome. It feels like several actors are in their own version of the story the way their performances seem to go in different directions. Pattinson is going naturalistic but a bit over the top, Hathaway is doing theater, etc.

The movie’s scope also suffers from Nolan’s insistance on only doing practical effects. The Charybdis whirlpool looks cool, but there’s no over head shots of it… probably because the practical way they created it won’t allow it. Scylla borderline looked to me like a bunch of sock puppets. The Circe tranformation sequence is really impressive practical stuff, but the transitions from the practical elements to human actors being done by obscuring them lessens the punch in my opinon.

To be clear I think practical effects in general are great and it’s fantastic that someone like Nolan challenges the overreliance on CGI in this age, but I feel like he goes too far. This also plagued “Oppenheimer”, where the nuke was just a filmed gasoline explosion (or somesuch), and it truly ruined that moment for me.

I also feel like the unwillingness to use CG might be the reason why the interpretation of the Laestrygonians is so off from the source. Going from what are massive ogre-like man eating giants that throw rocks at the ships to these steel clad “pretty big lads” is a terrible decision in my opinion. The sequence we got is nowhere near as terrifying as it could have been.

Finally, some of the action feels almost comical in places. The piece whereOdysseus kills the suitors in particular feels really oddly constructed. I realize that a sequence where one man manages to kill all of these people is hard to make real and convincing, but I am certain it could’ve been pulled off better.

That being said I still very much like the film. I am just the type of person who will speak about the flaws more than the strengths.

It is consistently competently shot, well acted (even though the styles are different as I noted), the score by Ludwig Göransson is very immersive (though has no piece that is particularly memorable… it’s more ambient feeling). The interpretation of the Trojan Horse is original and interesting. Etc. It’s good. But it is also not as good as I had expected.

Dog Soldiers (2002)

Awesome movie. Big fan of werewolf films, yet the vast majority of them suck. This one does not. Great tone, characters and tension. This is the movie that Neil Marshall did immediately before The Descent, it surprises me that his career basically dropped off of a cliff after these two films because I feel like he’s made two of the strongest modern horror classics of the 2000s.

I really enjoyed Heart of the Beast, it made me want to come home and hug my dog all night. It was a surprisingly quiet, contemplative film. Though imo they maybe fumbled the ending a bit. Brad Pitt’s character should have lived. I’m not saying this because I can’t handle a sad ending, I often favour them because they make you feel something. But given the framing of the movie being us seeing the dog getting picked up on the road at the beginning, it felt like the whole movie was building up anticipation for his catharctic rescue scene, which never happens. I understand that there’s weight to the character dying, and I can see it being thematically being all about death if we’re to interpret JK Simmons’ character as being death or representing death’s messenger. But it still would have brought it home a lot stronger if he had lived. That’s my opinion, anyway.

It gets a fairly strong recommendation from me overall, especially if you have a dog or you just love dogs in general. Maybe one of the better “dog movies” that I can remember seeing, I will probably watch it again honestly.

2 movies recently:

**Resident Evil**

Had a great time with this one. Had a lot more laughs than I thought it would.

Then again, Zach Cregger’s last movie Weapons had a lot of quirky moments of levity in some of the horror scenes.

The movie follows every-man Bryan, an organ courier, who has to deliver a package to Raccoon City General on what becomes the worst night of his life, and maybe, the last night on Earth…

Lots of gruesome gore, loved the moments Bryan wields a gun and screams like a baby – an action hero he is not – and I thought the ending could have offered more finality rather than what we got, I enjoyed my time with the movie.

I want to say this film at times felt like a different script that had Resident Evil bits tacked onto it, since other than some dialogue mentions and maybe a subtle easter egg/CGI monster design, there’s nothing super intrinsically “Resident Evil” like about it.
(I mean for Pete’s sake, the main objective is to get to this big looming building in the middle of town, Umbrella HQ, but not once do we see an iconic Umbrella Logo, heck the building itself doesn’t even _say_ Umbrella Corp on the side.)

Anyway, fun film though. I do think some of the scenes felt very horror video-gamey, like getting a glimpse of the one-way area you KNOW monsters are, and are forced to walk through, or facing a puzzle that blocks you (a Diamond Padlock) and trying to surmount it rationally doesn’t work, you have to find the Diamond Key!

* * *

**AKIRA**

This one I’ve seen like… 7 years ago I think? I don’t remember too much specifically, but it was good to rewatch.

Basically, in the “future” of 2018, a gang of teens gets caught up in a government conspiracy when Tetsuo, one of their own, gets injured and taken by the military.
Then, as his friend Kaneda looks for him, a hidden agenda for human experimentation gets uncovered, threatening the very city itself…

It’s good, its weird. It’s probably super influential to Cinema and pop-culture as a whole, though I have yet to look up what specifically, and man I love that Bike Slide… 🏍

Anyway, if you told me that I’d watch two movies in a row where in the end: the main character gets turned into a grotesque monster, I’d think you’re crazy… 😆😅

Also gosh, just watched Akira, now I’m gonna get into Control Resonant for 30 mins or so to wrap up my night… pretty fitting given the themes of telekinesis, unexplained supernatural power, a city on the brink… man.
That final scene with the explosion gave me big Control thoughts 😁 (now that I think of it, Hedron from the first Control reminds me of the giant AKIRA tank in the movie…)
