To quickly share my thoughts on the movies, and so we can all talk abit more the reasons for who we upvote and downvote:
Iron Man: Great film, but also feels a little quaint from the universe has followed. Also when you learn how chaotic the behind the scenes where, you start to notice some of the shortcuts they used too.
The Incredible Hulk: Forgettable, the only film in the MCU not to spawn it’s own series, and aside from William Hurt turning up in Civil War, I forget this movie is even in the MCU.
Iron Man 2: Killing time until The Avengers. Pretty dull, and there is nothing worse than a film that feels like it was made out of obligation. I believe this is the worst of the MCU thus far.
Thor: Pretty good I think, although Natalie Portman is so boring it makes her feel like a bit of an anchor on the movie. Loki is the obvious highlight. Still good but a bit vanilla.
Captain America 1: I like this movie more than I should. The plot basically vanishes midway through and some of the CGI is a bit dodgy at times (in fact, all the movies before The Avengers CGI is quite dated IMHO). I think Steve Rogers’ change from sprawny man to Captain America is very well done though and some of the guest cast like Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones and Toby Jones are great. Also oddly Clara from Doctor Who appears as an extra before Jenna Coleman managed to break out in British TV.
The Avengers: It’s action packed, it’s got great lines, a good heart, it gives all 6 Avengers their own moments. Honestly just fantastic really, and truth be told, I doubt the future Avenger films can ever be so well balanced with over a dozen MCU heroes running around now.
Iron Man 3: I feel like I should rewatch this one. I thought it was good but not great, but honestly director Shane Black does have style, and considering how many MCU films wind up feeling generic and by the book, Iron Man 3 at least feels like it had a unique vision behind it. Saying that though, the real villian sucks.
Thor 2: zzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier: The MCU does a political thriller, and it works really well. I think this might be the best movie in the MCU.
GOTG: MCU does '80s inspired Star Wars. It’s very funny, great soundtrack and has a fantastic ensemble.
Avengers 2: I feel like especially with Infinity War’s hype machine starting up, it really seems like alot of people have turned on Age of Ultron. Yes, it isn’t as good as the first Avengers, yes, Thor getting in a hot tub to tease Infinity War is severely dumb. But I still think it is a good movie, it just suffers from not having the wow factor of Avengers 1, the 3 new heroes aren’t really that interesting, and as someone who actually doesn’t really like Joss Whedon’s stuff that much, I feel like some of the lines bug me, especially the line about Hawkeye going to Scarlet Witch about how nothing makes sense. Still good though and still better than half the MCU films IMHO.
Ant-Man: Very generic. Extremely by the numbers and highlights the things that can really hurt the MCU. I worry the sequel won’t be much better with the same director behind it.
Captain America 3: I find it difficult to quantify this movie. It’s made by the people who did Winter Soldier, but whereas Winter Soldier was very tightly paced, CW plods along at times, and feels just a bit too long. The fight scene is amazing and is just so fun, but outside that, I just don’t have the urge to sit through it again. Complicated feelings on this one.
Doctor Strange: Again, I feel like this is yet again just a bit generic and by the numbers, with only the unique imagery really stopping this from being forgettable. Perhaps the most wasted MCU cast too.
Guardians 2: I actually like this one a tiny bit more than the first, but I also can’t help but think the first film is better. Guardians 2 has great moments, set pieces, ensemble, guest characters etc but I don’t think the plot holds it together that well. The plot feels like it just stops once they reach Ego’s planet for a good stretch of time and I think it kills the pace a little. The ending is fantastic though.
Spider-Man Homecoming: Actually haven’t seen this. Just didn’t get around to going to the movies to watch this. Will probably need to watch it before Infinity War hits.
Thor 3: Honestly, while I liked this movie, I didn’t love it. Not to sound dismissive, but to me, it felt like Guardians, but not as good. Not as funny as Guardians, not as heartfelt, not as many great characters, not many great set pieces etc. I actually think Guardians 2 coming out 6 months before this hit hurt my experience actually, might have been a bit more positive. I think the gag of a character saying something serious, only for something comedic to undercut it has been done to death at this point. The best thing about this movie is how hot Cate Blanchet is gothed up.
