You can still extoll the evils of sand and have good dialogue that explains why the Jedi Council (or just Obi-Wan) turn a blind eye to man who is obviously in love even though it brakes their rules

George Lucas is a wonderful storyteller and among the best. But he’s not a good a writing dialogue or the best instruct his actors. That piece of dialogue could have added something extra the Revenge of the Sith.
I dunno the dialogue in American Graffiti is really good in fact that film is good in general and more people should see it. I dunno about best storyteller given the prequels but ypu are right saying he has issues with directing actors.
