The Story Discussion (Spoilers)

Yeah, there will be fanfic of Arthur x Diana for sure.

Just finished my first H3 playthrough so now I can come and join all the cool kids in the spoilers sections!

I was very happy with how the story turned out, was convinced the Grey was going to be the ultimate baddie (I thought that The Constant would die in Chongqing), and that dance with Diana at the end of The Farewell was fucking brilliant.

Fair play to IOI, they’ve wrapped up the story well and left themselves all the pieces they’ll need to pick up the next game from a solid place, whenever they’re ready to dive back into Hitman.

I actually enjoyed the story quite a bit. I think 47 only pretended to be surprised when Diana revealed that she poisoned him. As we were told he puts a lot of trust in her. I would rate the story of Hitman 3 as the best out of the last three games. It is quite good on its own and concludes the trilogy well.
That said, I hope that with the next game, instead of picking up where they left off, io will remaster codename 47 and hopefully the rest of 4 classic games.

So, one of the main things I was pondering about the story was the ICA’s role and I have to say, I have to feel sorry for them. I mean, they’ve went through so much shit in the past few games: getting eradicated by The Franchise in Blood Money, Diana sabotaging them in Absolution’s prologue and now 47 leaking all their files to the public.

Maybe on the other hand, this means that the ICA just doesn’t let up and will be reformed again, possibly by Diana. Because to me, the ICA has always been an integral part of the Hitman series to me and I was gutted to see them go like this. I even made quite the pause before deleting the files on the data core in Chongqing.

I really just hope to see them again in the next games.

Really liked the story on this one! Felt very satisfying and final. It’s good to have a nice way to wrap up the trilogy. I’m sure that some people were be divided on how they feel about the last mission just being the train, but it felt nice to me to have the final mission be a story driven one where you can not worry about being the silent assassin (similar to the final one of blood money).

I loved the story aswell. Even after knowing a few spoilers before, I still got surprised a few times, and really, really enjoyed how everything played out in the end. Now lets hope the game gets some solid post launch content, with some really sweet new bonus missions and unlocks in future challenge packs.

It is a bit deeper than that. The key moment is not when she “betrays” him. Its in the start of the final level when she tells 47 all he has to do is embrace his past.
For a story based on vengeance, this is trying to show forgiveness may have outcomes for the greater good.

About Grey…

I think the scene you mention is great storytelling and a way to give some final words to Grey - a final help from a partner.

Though, I think Greys story and death was overall anti climactic. Just boom, dead.

I do think Hitman 3 had the best story of the trilogy. It’s actually impressive the amount of storytelling they can squeeze between 6 missions. Well done!

I’m really, really, really happy that Grey didn’t turn out to be a bad guy. That would’ve been the worst and most obvious way to write him out of the story. His heroic sacrifices was pretty good, but I wish we would’ve been able to spend a bit more time with him.

That said, I also feel the story was heavily foreshadowing the twist of Grey and The Constant working together thanks to the ominous message from Haven. But in the end they never explained who sent the message and The Constant was freed by an unnamed, unseen crew member which felt rather anticlimactic.

Personally, here’s how I would’ve done it: Grey and Edwards were indeed in cahoots. However, Grey’s truly wanted to help 47 and get revenge on Providence for what they had done to them. So before the events of the game, he and Edward made a deal to destroy Providence. Grey would get his revenge and Edward the money and the connections. Grey kept this deal secret because he was afraid the others would disapprove of him working with The Constant. Then after Dartmoor, The Constant, betrayd Grey because he never wanted to the destroy Providence and just used him and 47 as tools to get rid of The Partners. Then the rest of the story could play out the same way.

The second issue I had was that the ICA got exposed and destroyed. Again! After getting exposed and almost destroyed by Diana at the beginning of Absolution. After getting almosted destroyed by The Franchise.

These guys are sure unlucky.

Not sure how I feel about this. With the ICA the developers had a very easy way to justify 47 travelling all around the world, killing bad people. Now it’s just 47 and Diana. Sure, he can still travel around the world, killing bad people for Diana. But do we really want that? Fans already pointed out how the story tried to paint the ICA as a force of good with stuff like “the fate of a nation being in your hands 47.” Do we really want a game where 47 and Diana save the world by killing people?

But to end of a positive note: I do love the final confrontation with The Constant. It was a good send-off for the main villain of the trilogy and the fact that 47 could apply some cruel mercy Dishonored-style was a pleasant surprise.

I would like to point out that Diana said that to remind 47 of the stakes. The ICA just wanted 47 to kill the two because they got a contract.

True, but a lot of people still had issues with that line.

I’m kind of worried that the next game is going to turn 47 and Diana into the “heroes”, who travelled around the world and kill bad people because they’re doing bad stuff and not because they’re paid to do so.

The funny part is, I swear Diana leaked all their files to the public too but they kinda just ignored that part.

As 47 said in the prologue:

“She flushed all accounts, cut off all communication lines, exposed the Agency and used the confusion to vanish.”

I don’t think she leaked all their files to the public, but just slightly exposed them.

Almost makes you think that the story of Absolution was kind of a mess.

IOI really tied up all loose ends rather neatly in the end. Grey’s dead. Olivia’s gone.

I’ve already said enough about why I find that serum to be a rather unreliable dependent for the plot to eventually rely on: it does its job regardless.

My thoughts on the post-Haven text message are that it is best understood as occurring simultaneously with Diana learning of the Constant’s escape; thus, Olivia sent a triumphant message before learning what had really happened.

Regarding the ICA - they’re no great loss. Diana and 47 can form or join something else, or take contracts as an independent outfit.

47 hinted at the end that he may change his name (“That’s not who I am anymore”). It may be metaphorical, but who would keep a meaningless number if you’ve abandoned your former life as a semi-autonomous, semi-human creature? If he does change his name (to Humphrey Harrison, to pull something from thin air), it will be a marketing disaster.

You haven’t been paying attention to 47 if you think that “I’m sorry” was out of character. He’s a man who showed sentimentality and emotion as far back as being a Gardener for Vittorio in Silent Assassin. And Hitman Absolution he basically abandoned the ICA in favour of Diana because they were on track to make their own cline program. Diana has been the only person in his life for 20 years and since getting his memories back he’s been on a more personal journey.

Vittorio did not betray trust like Diana did (…I’ll never forget- those who betrayed me, and those who never failed my trust"). Absolution case was not just for Diana’s sake, for 47 the creation of clone-assassins is a personal story.
In Blood Money, we clearly saw 47’s reaction to betrayal (Bitch!). And even when 47 obviously understood what Diana was up to and why he did it, he still did not get in touch with her because she deceived him and there is no more trust.
So, yeah, “I’m sorry” is totally out of character

I just realised that this game has 3 female targets out of 16 targets (Carlisle, Royce, Vidal), a decrease from 5/16 (Margolis, De Santis, Graves, Parvati, Yamazaki) in the first season and 8 out of 17 (Reynard, Sierra, Martinez, Shah, Zoe, Sophia, Savalas and Vetrova) in the second season.

Yeah but you’ve also gotta remember 10 of those targets are ICA agents with ‘Bodyguard’ AI. And throughout the whole series IO has never applied that AI to a female NPC (not sure why tbh)

So of the ‘main’ targets 3/6 are women (would’ve loved some female ICA agents tho)
