Then IO should not do these deals to begin with. They have that option. Plenty of other fish in the sea they can collaborate with that are more willing. And we don’t know the agreement, so we don’t know the “likely” culprit. Removing any blame toward IO for these DLC’s just encourages their worst, money-grubbing behaviour as they can just say “It’s not our fault, guys!”, or lead people to assume that, as evidenced here.
That is still not a great argument, and again, just ignores and any all rationale people give to not purchase it. Price is not the only factor, and adding a comparison with homeless people is honestly quite tasteless.
They themselves wouldn’t be able to play the DLC you’re saying is really cheap to purchase. They have bigger things to worry about, like…food. And not having a house to live in.
Also, in the UK, food in general has gone up in price, not just candy or chocolate, we have a whole “cost of living crisis” over here, people and families are trying to make ends meet.
Then maybe that should’ve been said in the original comment you posted, instead of adding much-needed context being added in later replies. I didn’t see this until I posted my own response.
And people are still allowed to complain about missing the chance to buy a DLC that probably shouldn’t be limited time. If they’re acting like a spoiled child, then sure, that’s probably a fair shot. But if they’re discussing ways to revive the DLC’s, I don’t see the problem (Disruptor DLC excluded).
Literally did. Fourth comment in this thread. I said it there, and have had to repeat myself numerous times that that particular and quite narrow subset of people is all I am referring to.
This is my sole point of focus. I agree with virtually every other aspect of this, including that it should not be time limited and should not have a cost applied, new players coming in afterward miss it, etc. But it does have time limits and a price, and when those who know it does, deliberately don’t act on it for whatever reason, and then complain once it’s gone as if they didn’t have the opportunity already, that’s what I’m talking about.
I really don’t get why we still do ET/Escalation now like they change the maps enough for it to be a special assignment esc mission surely it would make more sense to have have a dlc around a bonus mission with no complications and then add challenges where you can unlock the items and suits that come with the dlc but definitely doesn’t make sense either with why they make the content time limited for purchase
My guess (based on nothing) has always been that the time-limited availability to purchase aspect allowed them to negotiate a significantly cheaper deal with the celebrity for use of their likeness/voice compared to if they had been negotiating a deal for a permanently available to purchase DLC.
The “they did it to use FOMO as a marketing tool” seems unlikely to me. The backlash against it seemed to be fairly obvious the moment it was announced with the Bruce Lee pack, that I find it quite hard to believe it was just a marketing thing to try increase the DLC sales. They would have known it wasn’t going to go down well.
Yeah but you just know there was a board meeting where some suit goes, “Contract negotiations with a celebrity’s estate? Manufactured FOMO with our customer base driving engagement? Shrug! Why not both?”
I’m no businessman, but I don’t get why would it be cheaper to make them time limited Elusive Targets. They’re already negotiating to have the targets permanently available in the game via the ET Arcade (at least The Undying, Drop, Splitter and Banker). And even outside of that they’re “permanent” in the sense that IO can seemingly run the ETs as long and as often as they please.
The celebrity’s likeness is also permanently available to see in-game, either from the Elusive Targets tab or the ET Arcade tab. Even the celebrities which were time limited are still fully visible: The Infiltrator, The Reflection, and The POS Disruptor’s ET pages can still be viewed by anyone, where the briefing video and target image use their likeness. The Reflection briefing even has Eminem’s voice in it.
It’s not necessarily cheaper, it might just be a condition imposed by the rightholders to even sign the deal in the first place. We probably have no way to know what it exactly entailed, so for now I’m willing to give IOI the benefit of doubt since Jovovich’s ET doesn’t inlude any time limited sales (and I really hope all of this just originates from a contract clause and not some shitty marketing tactic).
Given that this is the same company that did the Sapienza pack (and even made Samir try to defend it on stream), I wouldn’t give them that benefit. They have been making questionable marketing decisions for a while now.
Just as on way: If I was one of the celebrities, I would want the deal structured in a way that I have a minimum amount of money coming in as a result of the content being available to purchase. ie “X% of the total sale or payment of $X, whichever is the higher of the two” and I can see someone in IO’s position adding “each month the content is available to purchase” to the end of that.
Time limiting the DLC would then limit the number of minimum payments that have to be made by bunching all the sales into just a month or two of the year.
I’d be surprised if IO just had unlimited power to reactivate the CelebrETs as often as they want with no catch. I see it as being more like that its “each time the content is activated as an Elusive Target, a payment of $X will be payable to [insert celebrity name here]”.
Again, its all speculation since we’ll never know what is in those deals.
