People still use it for both

Mixed feelings on this.

It is pretty amazing, especially when apparently the episodes recovered were some of the less likely to be found, due to not being sold to many overseas markets. Apparently there is a big claim from someone that there is currently another collector in talks with the BBC to return 2 other Doctor Who episodes. Whether or not that is true or if true will pan out, I’m not sure.

There are rumours that private collectors may still hold more missing episodes. In fact, we basically know that for The Web of Fear episode 3, when most of that story was recovered in 2013 with that one episode missing, it turns out episode 3 was discovered, but then stolen by someone.

So who knows, hopefully a few more may turn up. 95 are still missing. Saying that though, anything that turns up is amazing. And The Dalek’s Masterplan is a story that will really benefit from it. DMP is a story of 12 episodes (arguably 13, with a one episode prelude called Mission to the Unknown, also missing), and (arguably) the longest Doctor Who TV story. Only episodes 2, 5, and 10 of those 12 existed until now. Means the story’s first half is a lot more watchable, and should make the whole story a bit more cohesive.

Fun fact, episode 7, The Feast of Steven, is basically considered to be the episode the most unlikely to resurface, I think due to how little it was sold, since it was basically a self contained comedy Christmas episode in the middle of the story. But that episode is famous for William Hartnell’s Doctor breaking the fourth wall to wish the viewers a Merry Christmas.

I feel like this is apt

It isn’t necessary to imagine the world ending in fire or ice. There are two other possibilities: one is paperwork, and the other is nostalgia. Eventually within the next quarter of a century, the nostalgia cycles will be so close together that people will not be able to take a step without being nostalgic for the one they just took. At that point, everything stops. Death by Nostalgia. - Frank Zappa

Psh, we’ve been there for a while. Instant replay, anyone?

Good, everything we learned about it told me it was going to be yet another mistake, yet another adaptation that did not follow the source, and so it didn’t deserve to see life. Resident Evil has the same problem.

I remember every single one of these, and others not listed here that I’m assuming share a similar fate. And I’m sad.

Great funny (depressing?) breakdown of how Elon has changed and ruined Twitter since he took it over years ago. From a recent episode of Last Week Tonight.

Kinda disappointed he didn’t once bring up Elon’s nazi salute though… I always feel like that needs to be called-out when talking about him.
Honestly I just wish he could spend more time talking about hiw twitter’s gotten worse.

Knew it was a mistake from the moment of its announcement, everything I’ve learned about it since then has done nothing to change that perception, including this - as the Brits would say - rubbish. This looks like Harry Potter from Temu. Supposedly the point was to do a more faithful adaptation of the books, yet they’ve explicitly stated that they’re making changes. The movies made changes due to timing, taking things out, adding things in just to flesh out context for those that had to be taken out. This is supposed to have enough time as a series to put in everything from the books, yet they’re adding things, or outright changing some things. So… why bother then? You had the movies for that?

I could be wrong, but between it being too soon still to remake such a cultural phenomenon, the controversy surrounding Rowling who’s name is still very much attached to this project, and the utter blandness of what this trailer shows we’re in store for, I predict that there will either be no second season, or that even if there is, diminishing returns won’t allow this project to last long. I’ll state here and now: we will not be seeing Harry Potter’s name get spit out of the Goblet of Fire in this version. It’ll get as far as a shortened season to fit in Prisoner of Azkaban and no further, if it even gets that far.

I really have to wonder if this series is going to do well or not as well. On the one hand, Harry Potter was a cultural juggernaut and people certainly still recognize the name, but on the other hand, when the movies originally came out it was in time with the books and the popularity of the series was at its height. In addition, as you said, and whether anyone agrees or not, the author has certainly been the center of controversy that may turn certain audience members away. I just can’t see this series getting the same type of reception the original movies did.

I think a big factor is that the way people view media is so different now. There’s never been more competition from movies, TV, streaming, YouTube, other social media. There’s just so much more out there, so it’s a lot tougher to keep people invested in just one thing.

And plus there just isn’t as much novelty with the HBO series. When the movies came out, it was the first time people got to see the text on the page transformed into live action. For lack of a better word, it was truly magical to see the wizarding world, especially in the first movie. But now with this series, it’s just another live action depiction.

I just finished the last episode. Loved the show. You guys should check it out.

I got a copy of Nirvanna The Band The Show’s 2 seasons recently through [the power of friendship online].

Man, if the movie was wild and crazy and full of “but HOW did they film that??” moments, the show is equally bonkers. I’ve heard of a few others from later in the series I haven’t gotten to yet and it’s just… HUH what the heck?

Case in point: Episode 4 - The Blindside which I just saw.
In which Matt goes blind after watching all the Star Wars movies sitting too close to the TV, so Jay has to drag him to the opening night of The Force Awakens and describe the movie to him… until they get kicked out.
And then hunted down by angry fans.
And then Matt becomes Daredevil and does a whole scripted fight scene.

First off, how?? Film in the theatre and then also manage to get that past Disney to put in the TV series?? I think them getting kicked out was a set-up because the “fans” who got kicked out with them ended up being a part of the elaborate fight scene later which was obviously planned.
Even then, I’m sure they weren’t actually talking during the film, since any shots of their faces conveniently has their mouths obscured by a railing conveniently covering them from a bad angle.

Also their commitment to the bit when it comes to references is hilarious. A whole shot-for-shot recreation of various scenes and lines from Home Alone for an episode, but in their own way. Really impressive to see.

Not too many clips easy to find, but this early one about them getting into Coffee was great, glad it’s online. :joy:

One tiny issue, one instance of an R-slur so far. :worried: Sad. Darn.
But also it was featured in a “flashback” bit, which I’ve recently learned that they intentionally use alternate cuts for as if the character is ‘mis-remembering’ events, usually portraying someone as meaner than what actually happened, so… bad but with intention? :man_shrugging:
