I voted in today’s state election (similar to a provincial/regional assembly poll). The results will be out on Monday, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
Recently, the Election Commission carried out a Special Intensive Revision (SIR), a process to update and verify the voter list. While there were earlier concerns about people from neighbouring countries being included, this step should help ensure a fair election.
The ruling party in our state is in opposition to the central government. I have seen more developed regions in other parts of our country, especially in the south, where some states are also in opposition yet more developed than ours. I hope for a better future with stronger development, better governance, and more effective use of public funds.
We voted using an Electronic Voting Machine (EVM), which records votes instantly. We started using EVMs in national elections around 2004 to help manage the large population. Earlier, my parents voted using paper ballots. There is also an ink mark placed on the finger to show that a person has voted.
Do they use ink in elections where you live as well?
I live in Kolkata, a city in the eastern part of India, and these are pictures of my city on election day today. They were taken from the 20th and 10th floors (east side) of our apartment, and will be used for comparison a couple of years later. ![]()
