It is common for Challenges, Mastery rewards, items, Contracts, etc. to take up to a minute or so to load the image based on your internet connection, but if the images are consistently gone then that is a bug.
As far as I know, this is not currently a widespread issue, but maybe I just haven’t seen the specific things that are bugged if it is one.
As Floopie says, most of the time, it’s an Internet connection issue.
If you move to another screen / page or scroll to another section, images also may cease to load, causing missing images until you go to another game mode or mission, or restart the game.
If waiting for the loading to finish does not solve the problem after re-starting the game, try verifying files (or equivalent on your gaming platform).
I have a slow connection so every time there are new featured contracts, for example, there’s a dark grey spinning animation in the centre of the box until it’s loaded… can take 2-3 minutes. Images for new challenges, Elusive Targets, Elusive Target Arcades have similar issues.
I haven’t had any issues with regular mastery unlocks recently, but likely because I have completed them a few years ago and have not viewed them, but for Freelancer, I do have missing images if I do check its mastery unlocks.
It’d be nice if IO Interactive were to include the mastery level, challenges, and ET / ET Arcade images into the “permanently” downloaded images of the game installation as they are part of the base game. DLC (e.g., some ET Arcades and I suppose some missions) should be “permanent” once purchased, and the placeholder image before purchase ought to be a one-time download too.
I do not understand why they must be downloaded (or triggered by Internet connection?) each time.
When I had a slow computer, featured contracts’ images would get “stuck” as missing, but apparently this was a game update issue as it started in one month after an update and stopped being missing after another two updates. Featured contracts’ images being missing were the worst as clicking on the black box opens the contract, but as everything in the next boxes were also missing, I could not see any of the terms of the contract (i.e., target names / images, conditions, restrictions)… unlike denton’s image for the missing mastery unlocks where at least the text description is visible.

They are on Xbox, so the equivalent would be a reinstallation.
They are gone constantly, game/console restart doesn’t help.
So I am on Xbox, yes. I have reinstalled the game, deleted local cache and still same issue with 3 same pictures. I have previously problems with internet connection, but they look different, I think. This replaces images with some strange red circle.
