007 "First Light" News Thread

And it’s going to happen again… and again.

I was only joking, to demonstrate how dramatically different the likes of M and Q will be in this re-imagining with regards to gender swaps and such

This looks like it is has all the elements of a classic Bond: gadgets, car chases, one-liners, an innocent finding he’s trashed a place and making a comic excuse, the girls, Moneypenny and Q branch, and Bond facing some seemingly inescapable death trap scenario. It could be on par with the new Indiana Jones game.

Does however look like a reskinned Uncharted 4 with the engine from HITMAN (2016), and Tom Hollande cast as the lead.

This is how I feel, especially as Bond looks so young that at his age he’d be just joining the navy, not a seasoned sailor handpicked to be an assassin. He reminds me of Spiderman in the PS5 game. But the Survivor reboot of Lara Croft had a similarly early-20s deliberately cute protagonist who proved their worth, so maybe Bond will grow on us while he grows through the story.

He looks 26 to me.
It’s a reasonable face for the intent.
I, actually, kinda like it.
It’s the kind of face that gets rugged as it ages. And yet, completely ordinary, forgettable.
(and can already look like it with the right cinematography, which I could see happen in the game)
And IOI is not against having timeline jumping a bit into the future/starting in the close past.

I do wonder what rank he will be given. Because 26 is way too young for his canonical OF-4.

We will see how they do the story. I get why at 20-something for the player fantasy.
But video games are kinda infamous for badly writing 20-something lately.
I thought his origin story would have been early 30s. Most Bond are mid-30s at minimum.

The contrast I have in mind in writing is between Mass Effect Trilogy Shepard (30s) and Andromeda Ryder (20s).

Then again I think the story will be about Bond maturing fast, ala Casino Royale movie.
I also have some trust toward IOI on this part of the story.

Seeing IOI post about the partnerships with brands.
Always thought that their communication about the 50/75 millions players had working the terms of those as their reason.

A maturation storyline would be nice, and we could see him grow over the course of the game (maybe even a trilogy) if this is his first ever MI6 mission. Kind of like Alex Rider, another unusually young action hero who grew into the role. Bond seems to be parachuting too and if he’s double trouble, then is likely SO, which would add a few more years on top. But as I say, it worked with Tomb Raider, so it may pan out for Bond. The difference is he seems to already be confident and established, whereas Croft had to earn it through her game.

A much lower rank but he got noticed for being brazen and taking risks, because he’s cool :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

The chess match, and the level seems to take place somewhere in the Carpathian Mountains.
How appropriate for IOI.

As for the foot pursuit, and maybe the club if they are as related as the trailer makes, they look like in London itself by the skyline (more artistic shard, london eye. Even though they look displaced for the scenery).

That chess ranking puts her at grandmaster level too, like Kronsteen in From Russia With Love

Please god don’t let us have to beat some grandmaster to progress the story.

Looking forward to the part where all the Bonds agree to put down their guns and settle their differences with an honourable swordfight against each other.

I’ve never been overly keep on the Bond films, but regardless of that, IOI have done an amazing job with this game by the looks of it. Looking forward to seeing more on what’s to come!

Sod it.
I will throw my hat in story speculation.

From the possible double meaning of the title.
And the golden quantum computer room and golden roman “main henchman coded” character.

Some techbro who inherited irl Zuckerberg obsession with Roman Emperors is trying to overthrow the government to have some “enlightened by technology” new system of governance.
(knowing IOI, we then discover he was himself a pawn for others, maybe even a smokescreen)

Seriously though, was that Lennie James?

Edit: never mind, confirmed elsewhere that it is. Excellent.

I’ve been thinking a lot today about the last shot in the trailer, with Bond and his Trainer dangling over a pool of alligators. Seems very old-fashioned and a fun nod to the older Bond films, though I assume we’ll be getting a fairly grounded and menacing Bond villain. I wonder what the overall tone will be.
Also like, what kind of villain keeps and uses a pool of alligators to torment possible intruders, feels like a lot of work and upkeep that a simple interrogation by a skilled merc could do instead.

Also unsure what time period this game might be set in. Lots of people seem to be pointing out Hitman asset reuse like cars and stuff, so I’d have to assume it’s a bit modern-day? But still an origin story for 007.

Interesting blend of various elements and plot choices so far, I’m intrigued.

Semi-ambiguously timeless 2020s (as in the whole decade) is my guess.

Same way WoA is semi-ambiguoulsy timeless late 2010s.
It allowed H2016, developed in 2013-2015 to have the story be canonically starting in late 2018 and have bonus mission set years before. And H3 Freelancer, and its bonus mission, a few years after.

Could also make a timejump of a few years possible.
If the game sells well and sequels are made, I could see First Light be early 2020s (set when development started). And then jump to mid 2020s/current year of sequel release. And so a jump from the 26yo Bond to its usual 30s self.
While keeping the assets and vibe.

But I expect “timeless” to be the capital word.

My guess? Complete modern day reboot. If this game were to be tied to an era in the film series, it would be one that hasn’t been filmed yet. Like Craig’s Bond, it’s a complete fresh start, so no reason why it doesn’t take place here in the mid-2020s.

Yeah, I think we can safely assume it’s in 2020s due to the Defender design and flatscreen monitors. I also think the Omega Seamaster shown is a fairly recent iteration, but I’m not certain.

He’s also straight up just taking off his Bluetooth headphones when he say’s “The name’s Bond” to the receptionist. Seems pretty clear cut to me when this is supposed to take place.

:joy:

At first glance, the game looks like a fast-paced version of Hitman—an IOI title with much more advanced action sequences, along with driving and parkour mechanics added in.

Patrick Gibson’s cold, cunning gaze—and a hint of mischief in his expression—make him a great fit for the role of a young agent.

The gameplay seems solid. Personally, it reminded me more of Hitman: Absolution than Hitman: World of Assassination. Some areas feel sandbox-like, but the main story seems fairly linear and will probably push players along a fixed path most of the time.

According to the game’s descriptions, you can choose between stealth and action, but it seems like stealth won’t be possible everywhere. Chase scenes and high-paced action appear to be baked into the core of the experience.

Layering gadget mechanics and a deeper story onto the traditional Hitman-style gameplay could turn out really well. That said, it’s clear this won’t have the same dark, moody atmosphere as the Hitman series.

Can’t wait to play it.
