007 First Light - State of Play, previews, and impressions (game release March 27th 2026)

Yea no way they keep the golden gun locked behind this for long. It’s iconography

Barring the framerate issues (though blatant enough to make me wonder why they decided to show the footage), I found it plain uninteresting — though maybe that’s on me, I feel like I’d been off-base for what the game is supposed to be. I expected a spy thriller akin to Alpha Protocol with all its social interactions, but this is just a third-person shooter with the 007 brand and a tone similar to Uncharted.

Nonexistent social aspect, puzzles are just “here’s WoA but watered down”, the car chase rubberband was ridiculous and killed all suspension of disbelief, ditto for how scripted the airport shootout was — and more things piling on that just took me out of it.

Edit: Okay, the section after the hotel+airport showcase is interesting. Why couldn’t that have been the whole showcase, showing the sandbox and actually making use of the social aspect? It’s like IOI are cursed to always have bad marketing.

I kind of agree. I already expressed how I fear the vehicles might be boring on replay but the scripted parts could be as well. This assumes it will be like Hitman and be replay able of course. But I did like what I saw overall and that there is more focus on being able to go loud in this game as opposed to Hitman.

I don’t know.
And IOI spent the good will those last two years for me to not give benefit anymore.
I still want to know if the levels are semi-open box, or scripted.

It’s not the closest thing we ever saw to the one city block immersive sim that Hitman WoA is, and lives by.
And the core of what I admire about it.

Because right now, it looks like the Le Chiffre Elusive Target, if it was only the mission story and no other free-form options around. And unlike it living in the legacy of the Paris open map, it’s without an playful open level design because there never was a need to make it.

The Slovakian Carpathian Mountain level, the first reveal, looks like a “made to be part of the player first play session” level.
Which is neat to see.

But first, praises!
(more peppered through)
Engine looks good for the width of the environment.
I appreciate the animations and reaction to the environment (starting the fire while walking, catching the parapet when walking toward it…).
It’s the kind of small resonant improvements I was looking for from the devs.

My hope is still that what we saw in the reveal is the First Light equivalent of the first play story start entrance in Hitman 3.

Sure, here starting undercover, and heavily in the story. But I hope it then opens up in replay. (why have the suits skins after all).
Would cut the opening drive and dialogue too.
I could see a “skip to the parking lot” option.
I mean, at least for the speedrunners.

As much as the gameplay cut said “Inevitably” at the cut to the chase scene, I hope it’s not.
Because, everything else showed the second part are like 5 to 10 minutes loop choices of one room, or one situation.
Maybe with a sub-objective (from going to the first floor, to the photographer option, to which cameras option) (like le Chiffre did, invitations, three guests and their sub-quests in options, branching at the poisoning…)
But nothing wider.
Gated.
Check-pointed.
And I don’t know how to feel about it.

I’m sincerely glad there are so many options there though. And fun ones too.
Reactivity inside those situation is off the roof.
Genuine cheers to the devs.
Love the charisma options.

Firefights and fisticuffs looks very fun to play around.
Obvious possibility to pack them with “moments”.
Smooth enough to do so in the flow, even in a first play.
It’s tricky to do, but they did it.

The gameplay feels very modal.
Social, Stealth, Chases, Shoutouts. Hostile Environment, Public Environment.
Heavy rules of behaviour and rules of engagement to this Bond.
Can’t transform one into another. Some are more than fair (don’t see social stealth on the road). Others will make me miss Hitman playfulness.
Again I don’t know how I feel about it.

But I want to know if I can complete the levels, their entire 30-60 minutes differently.
I don’t mind if the airport is only for a shoutout, it’s fair. It’s a bit scripted, enemy placement needs to be curated… But can I avoid it. Or its equivalent in other levels.
Right now, I see optimizations. Cinematical runs.
But no challenge runs.

I would love it if the whole core hotel was modeled, able to be walked around, and semi-open explorable.
I guess as a onion with different layer of gameplay. But still approachable any angle the player wishes.
And then with some dedicated curated branches and world states under certain circumstance.

If not, it’s fair.
It gives crescendo. It gives stories.
I also have the impression that firearms usage are only in self defense / in hostile territories.
No kill everyone challenge I guess.
It’s fair for Bond.
And it does give more reasons for the more sequential events. Controlled mayhem, social places…

I guess it is the most appropriate design for the game.
And it seems very well done indeed.

It will have my respect, but neither my hype, nor a day one from me.

Finally, good old CHIRON container spotted in the airport.

I doubt it / don’t want to get my hopes up, but it would be amazing if the car chase was avoidable and we could then infiltrate the airfield in other ways.

On the website, they revealed more of the voice actors: https://ioi.dk/?panel=careers%2Fnews%2F2025%2F007-first-light-gameplay-reveal

007 First Light - Specialist Edition will be offered exclusively on Amazon.com, featuring standout and unique packaging for the game’s case, as well as an exclusive original outfit for Bond, the Classic Tux, for even more flair.

lol. So even if you order the CE, you don’t get everything. If anyone wanted to own everything, you’d have to buy the game twice it seems.

I’m wondering if after you complete the story you can replay condensed versions of the levels that trim the fat a bit. I’m also wondering if the levels are built like Sandboxes that can be reused in other game modes like what Hitman was known for.

Watched the full footage and couldn’t resist thinking that it’s just an enhaced Hitman.
As they say, in this game they gave us some of what we’ve been asking for.
E.g. more intense hand combat and throwing guns to an enemy.
Don’t know how to feel about it.
But I liked the gameplay

It takes place in Slovakia? Wow, that’s cool! I mean, it’s not Czechia, but Slovakia is criminally underutilized in video games and pretty much everywhere else.

Well that was certainly bonkers. Some parts looked friggin incredible. Everything I’ve come to expect from a Bond game. As a huge fan of Uncharted, it was giving me a lot of similar vibes around that series.

Getting it out a couple of months before GTA6 was a smart move as well. I was overall very impressed with the footage they showcased, intrigued to see how each mission will be handled with a different approach.

Daaaamn I expected this game to release sometime around June/Summer 2026.
(Could still get delayed, as games do lately)

But sweet! Hope for the best.

Looks like a fun weekend action game I’ll buy at 80% off 3 or 4 years from now.

Nah. GTA6 would crush it. It’s either get out in front, or wait until deep into 2026.

..hmm.

I WAS going to say “Goddamn It IOI!” But I think this is a whole lot more of Amazon’s fault. (Considering they own the Bond brand now)

Of COURSE they would want an Amazon EXCLUSIVE version just for themselves.

Previews are starting to drop.
I will edit them in the main post too.

They are glowing.
Congrats to IOI.

Freedom fighters reference!
I also noticed some assets and voice actors making a return as well as the circle and outline when hidden being copied over from Hitman.

Here is the image of the specialist edition. (thank you thrison)
(even more reasons to scummy practices from ioi..)

The gameplay is a cross between Hitman and Uncharted, and since I love both those I’ll probably love this too. I wonder if there will be a challenge system to complete like there was in Hitman since there seems to be many options for going through areas.

However, I hope that there’s a good encounter select system in the game, it would be kinda lame to have to go through a giant set piece before getting a chance to replay a social stealth section to try different methods. Or have to go through a social stealth section before being able to replay a big set piece.

Amusingly, every time I watch Bond enter the window in the first trailer I need to remind myself that he can’t change disguises to blend in lol.

I may be wrong, but I think that is part due to it is the first mission. I guess, they wanted to get all aspects in the game as soon as possible so there is infiltrating, then car chase then a lot of action and explosions. In the second part it didn’t look like there is as much stuff that blows up, but more possibilities to use the environment.

I just hope, they get a good mix in. The car stuff isn’t for me, so hopefully its not to much, but everything else looks like fun. Kind of Hitman and Uncharted mixed together.

I don’t think so, at least not that car chase because it is the first in the game. Maybe later missions will have more different possibilities to get to the next “stage”, but this first one seemed pretty scripted to me. It does make sense though, since you want to get people in and later can expand with the possibilities.

The more I think about it, the more I am wondering if this might end up being closer to Hitman Absolution than Hitman WOA with sequences being linear and connected but certain areas being open to exploration.
