I’m a couple days late to the party, but this should be fun.

Now I don’t know about you but I think Red Dragon Negotiator #2 is infinitely more complex a character than Red Dragon Negotiator #1

Frankly, I’m just voting for RDN1 because of the distinction of it being the first target in the franchise. Yeah, we now know that there were earlier chronological targets, and yeah we had to kill that orderly to escape the asylum in the tutorial level, although I don’t count that one as a real target. But in terms of actual contracted targets that you earn money for eliminating, RDN1 is the first, and there’s a certain purity in it. Assuming that this is indeed 47’s first mission for ICA after initiation, then the sheer simplicity of this mission is a good setup for what’s to come. You get the sniper rifle, you buy a single bullet (47 showing off on literally his first day of work after passing the interview stage), get into the right position, one clean shot in the head through a narrow space between objects and then bounce before backup figures out what happened.

The most cliche’ form of assassination since the advent of high-powered rifles, and yet somehow pulling it off so perfectly with the most minuscule amount of equipment possible really sets the stage for the franchise. 47 makes the laziest form of targeted killing exciting on his first try, showing how good he is before ever even dabbling in the complicated shit he’ll become known for. I love it. For that simplistic purity alone, RDN1 is - rather oddly - my favorite target of the original game.

I am pretty sure it is indeed sarcasm.

I would have upped the amount we needed to eliminate or simply polled the definitively named targets to circumvent how C47 is half randos who are basically clay pigeons with no depth or backstory.

The Main Targets are of course the 5 Fathers, the others are only cannon fodder to move the story a bit forward and to convey how powerful and dangerous the are, which is extremely lacking in the WoA. Diana might tell me how dangerous and well guarded Rico Delgado is apparently is, but i arrived with the Bus next to his mansion and just climbed over his yard wall - compare this to Pablo Ochoa were we had to fight our way through the Jungle, befriend the Uwa Tribe and had to face a Leopard just to reach Ochoas Compound! Or Lee Hong, were we we had to start a gang war and even kill Hong Kongs police chief before even thinking of making a move on him.
Arkadij Jegorov we had to track down by ourselves and eliminate his business partners to get to him.

WoA is like: we need you to kill the worlds most dangerous guy, and we will bring you to his doorstep, lmao.

That’s why I’m fond of Hitman 2, because that also has that sense of building up to a target. As you say, the other targets are really just a way of gaining access to the real targets, which makes the real targets even better.

The later games lose that sense of building up to a target for the most part. They do have some neat backstory and settings, but few feel epic. Soders and The Constant have some build up, but the rest come and go.

Hey, it’s the modern world. 47 and ICA got better at finding out where people are. Besides, WoA did do that, just in a different way. The difficulty in getting to the main targets is their anonymity. Most of the targets we had to go through was to work our way up to who/where the real targets were. We just had to go through other targets with names and bases of operations of their own to do it, instead of a bunch of nameless henchmen. At least, until Freelancer.
