Fast Times at Vegan High

A comparison is not to show how things are exactly 1:1. It’s a consideration or estimate of the similarities or dissimilarities between two or more things.

And can I be frank with you for a second. If you watched earthlings and found the most provocative thing in the movie to be some words, I find that a bit troubling.

I never said that. I also said that I think the movie should be add with a trigger warning, because as much as I appreciate your motives, this movie can be traumatising for people (it was for me).

There are other movies which are more informative and less cruel, like cowspiracy.

Yet it was only thing you chose to single out? And the movie is per definition not cruel. It aims to inform people of cruelty so they hopefully will refrain from partaking in it, so quite the contrary.

There’s tons of other great movies, sure. I particularly like Forks Over Knives :+1:

Very cool. Let’s dedicate this thread to something constructive.

If anyone has any questions about veganism, feel free to ask here and I’ll do my best to give you a thorough response.

“What do you even eat!”

“Why are vegans so annoying?”

“What pushed you to go down the path to become vegan?”

Could be anything really. I’d like to start.

Why aren’t you vegan?

Because my entire diet wound disintegrate in front of me

Ah that would be a shame. What do you mainly like to eat?

Because they haven’t been able to make a synthetic meat or dairy product that tastes as good and costs as cheap as the real stuff.

Would you be willing to eat vegan if that was possible? That’s really cool. I don’t know how many products you’ve tried, but some of the stuff I’ve had has come too close for comfort. To the point where I’ve thought some mistake has been made haha.

I personally eat meat but try to eat less and less. I am not really planning to never eat it again but I think I don’t need that much as I currently consume.

What is you people’s stance on an insects-based diet as a source of proteins? It seems to make sense economically, looking at how much less resources it needs. It is just extremely unpopular in Europe so there is not much to try.

Also when I look back at the (weird) plants-do-not-feel-as-animals, I wonder if insects aren’t just automata that don’t experience suffering.

That’s awesome. Is that for health reasons, environmental or ethics? Or just to save some money?

The general stance among vegans would not condone eating insects. There’s studies suggesting strong evidence for some species and substantial evidence for others, that they do have the capacity to feel pain. This is heavy reading so I suggest scrolling to the conclusion.

On a more personal note, I just find it kind of unnecessary. If resource management is big to you, plant foods is the obvious choice. If protein is a concern to you it’s worth keeping in mind that ALL plants contain ALL amino acids. The ratio change from plant to plant, but as long as you eat a variety, protein shouldn’t ever be a concern to you.

Yes. If it were possible to maintain my lifestyle while supplementing actual meat and dairy products with artificial replicas so accurate that I couldn’t tell the difference (both flavor and texture), I’d cut out meat completely. So far, the only thing I’ve tried that has come close is the Impossible Whopper, and it was definitely close.

Mostly enviromental. If it was ethics, I would stop it altogehter. I think I could manage higher meat prices if I succeed to eat less of it. The current price is managable to me.

Thanks, I will take a look and, pardon me, chew a bit more through it.

EDIT: Oh well the pdf is not free :frowning: Despite being financed with tax money, ugh.

I never went below the surface of the matter, but it seems like I at least would have to consume quite more food if I wanted to get the same amount of proteins from plants. Is that a myth?

I think we are quite far from that. It sounds interesting but I doubt synthetic meat gets close in both taste and price. But ofc I would not mind if that happened to become true and only eat that stuff instead of real meat.

Nice. You’ve definitely got a point with the price point being way to high though. I often see the faux meat costing double the real animal product and wonder how. Subsidies and popular demand probably, but it seems so out of whack.

For myself, I’ve eaten my fair share of fake meats, but I’ve gotten to a point where I can do without them. I much prefer actual whole vegetables to something processed now. I do still use a soy drink for my oatmeal.

Personally, I think that just not enough effort is going into it because, for right now, there’s no real money in it for the right people. With all the advances in science happening in all fields, making substances that taste and feel like real meat or real dairy products while carrying the right nutritional benefits would be a relatively simple matter in the amount of time that’s gone by since someone had the idea. Between the need for funding and the corporate world keeping progress in check, if there were more money in the product, it would probably become available really quickly.

I am sure with more investments it surely progresses faster. But meat seems to be so very complex on a molecule level, I don’t see that to work out currently. Maybe with stem cells and artificial muscle contractions.

Is it just your general faith into science or do you keep up with the milestones in the field?

Don’t really keep up, but considering where we are, what’s already been accomplished in general, how close we’ve already gotten with replacement substances already, it just seems logical that we would have found a sufficient alternative by now if proper dedication had been applied. A bit presumptive perhaps, but that’s just my perspective.

Maybe. The more pressing question is how much protein is adequate? Protein deficiency is pretty much unheard of in the western world. The matter of fact is, if you eat enough calories worth of plants, you will get the proper amount of protein you need. If you are an athlete, add more beans and lentils. There’s plenty of vegan athletes out there so it must be doable.

As for myself, I eat when I’m hungry. Usually oatmeal for breakfast, snack on fruits and a bit of nuts throughout the day. Dinner is usually some “heavy” vegetable dish. I’ve never had to give protein a thought, granted, I’m not an athlete. But I’ve been running 10k’s and skateboarded while being vegan for 6-7 years. I don’t feel I’ve lost muscles.

Here’s pro plant based MD Garth Davis talking about it.
