Freelancer - General Discussion

Could this be a platform (or mod) issue? Cause on PC the music changes as I choose, and it stays that way until I change it again.

No mods. I’m playing on console: mostly Xbox Series these days but I’ve noticed it on my PS4 too. I’ve found no rhyme (hehe) or reason to the way the music tracks work in the safehouse.

I’m on Xbox and I never had any issues with the music. I mostly use the Jazz one.

Here’s what I noticed about the whole music thing:
You change music genre and it starts playing.
The music is muted when a location has been selected.
Its even more muted during a showdown.
Once a location is complete or you decide to cancel a location and not choose a new one, the music is audible again (its only audible upstairs)

Ok, it works like this: if you have a mission selected, the ā€œgoing on a missionā€-music will play instead of what’s on the stereo and instead of the ambient music outside. If you wanna enjoy your music, you gotta hold off on the plane tickets

Thanks for the clarification on the music, friends! I will try that next time.

Alerted Bangkok a-fuckin-gain and it starts me right next to a target??? Thank GOD he walked away, but sometimes I hate this game.

I did manage to finish it this time, but about ten non-targets had to die.

Top Dog is finally mine.

Perhaps somewhat amusingly, I still need to get the Cold Feet trophy - problem is that I rarely back out of missions unless I’ve resolved to use an alerted one for a finale, in which case I’ll then use an early exit just to shave off completion time.

Anyone else noticed this bug if you have the new dining table in the Safehouse? The floating banana.

I successfully completed my post-Prestige Hardcore run last night (on my alt account). It was often frustrating, often thrilling, sometimes enraging, and ultimately rewarding. And I’m not going to do it again.

What’s there to say about Hardcore that hasn’t been said before? Not much. I’ve said a lot of it myself and won’t offer any new strategies or tips here. The playstyle demands utmost patience and penalizes experimentation and risk-taking, which in my view is antithetical to Freelancer mode’s intentions especially when coupled with the uber-aggressiveness of the guards and how quickly they can shoot you dead. One wrong move and more often than not, you’re toast. This leads to a sort of slow, repetitive style of playing the game, using the same tactics and relying on the same tools, disguises, vantage points, etc.

In addition to the guards being over-zealous and over-powered, the lookouts are such a major pain in the ass. They are overpopulated in some key areas like the Mendoza tasting room or the Berlin basement dance party. Constantly playing an Instinct game of ā€œavoid the dotsā€ is frustrating, not fun.

The re-balancing of the Prestige Objectives significantly improved this mode (by making it slightly easier, or, rather, less easy to fail). Still, the trigger-happy guards and the inescapable lookouts keep the experience a frustrating one.

My rule for force-quitting is thus: You are allowed to do it, but don’t do it every time. If I accidentally get spotted by a lookout or suspect during a showdown and everyone starts running, well screw that, I didn’t come all this way for some dumb blunder to ruin things. If I am seen doing something relatively innocuous but still suspicious and half the map turns on me and starts shooting, I’m going to try again. If I do everything right and then accidentally eliminate the Leader with a Legendary pistol but shoot her through the back instead of through the head and fail the Prestige Objective on the last Showdown, you better believe I’m allowing myself a second chance. If I get into a shootout I should have and could have easily avoided, well… let’s see where this goes. Maybe I’ll quit, maybe I won’t.

Other than that, I would simply remind Hardcore players that Only The Prestige Objective Matters. Sometimes you think you can easily shotgun three guards and make an extra $1000… and sometimes said plan will go horribly wrong and you will die.

Also, always take the easy way out if you can. For example, after killing a leader in Mendoza, I was in my server (waiter) outfit and needing to exit. I should have run down to the vineyard, or even all the way to the newer car exit. Instead, I was closer to the Wetsuit exit, so told myself I could easily sneak out that way. I made one too many loud footsteps and notified the guards in the locker room to my presence. Shot them dead but barely made it out. The guards by the Wetsuit exit, now alerted, came after me, and landed a couple shots before I could dispatch them. If I had taken one more bullet I very likely would have died. I made it out alive but cursed myself for pushing my luck.

Pushing your luck, however, is what makes Hitman fun. Not being able to push your luck is what makes Hardcore not fun.

After Prestiging and resetting all my weapons and tools, it took me 4 or 5 attempts to succeed at the Hardcore run. Even during the successful run, I force quit a few times – but not every time I could have. There were a few close calls, a few moments where I was one bullet away from death and failure. The adrenaline rush is real in those moments. I started the Hardcore attempt on Mastery Level 86 or 87 and succeeded on Level 90, unlocking a small number of challenges along the way. My Freelancer Tools case was about 2/3rds full upon completion, and my Weapon Wall was about 1/4 full.

After getting the trophy and suit, I immediately reverted back to Normal Mode, climbed a long ladder, and lied down on my big soft bed.

That is pretty cool man!!

I’ve only ever done Prestige once because I like playing Freelancer knowing I have all my inventory available when I need it. I think it’s just a massive grind having to crawl everything back :smiling_face_with_tear:

Ok, that’s just stupid. Of course I could sedate the target, wait for him to be found and then poison him. But both this objectives with one target, really?

For that, I’d probably use the sedative dart gun, wait for him to be found and woken, then poison him later

Pick a different location, then go back to that one. It might change the number of targets. I’m almost positive that’s happened to me.

That’s what I had in mind. But ended up doing a really dirty run.

I’m pretty sure it doesn’t change the number of targets. There are still the same targets but you’ll get a different starting location. Usually do this on alterted Colorado (if I get the water tower start) or alerted Hokkaido (mountain path start). Those are the worst starts.

The mountain path’s not that bad, you can just let the guards escort you to the spa or kill them with the free tanto for an early guard disguise (unless you’re going for SA but who would pick that on alerted Hokkaido :x). I find the morgue start way more annoying. Can’t really argue against the water tower though.

The morgue start is not that bad. You just have to wait a few moments for both circling guards to get lost. Can easily make it out of the room before the morgue doctor turns around.

The water tower is simple: Kill both the guards below you and take the ladder down immediately. Easy disguise.

Insofar as you have to wait for the appropriate moment, sure. Though if I’m not playing in Hardcore mode, I’ll just get up straight away and gun down the guards.

Honestly that waiting feels like forever to me so I usually get up instantly and run away :x

In normal Colorado it’s a decent start, as you can just rush down without anyone seeing you and get the mechanic or spec ops disguise easily, but the extra guard in alerted mode makes it really annoying because you have to kill the guards on the roof or spend 2 hours hidden in the crate waiting for the alert to be called off before you can do anything

Edit: OK I just finished an alerted Hokkaido run where I spawned in the morgue, and I managed to get away without anybody noticing by mashing B as soon as I got control  (before being spotted KOing some guard and proceeding to gun down half the level anyway because, well, it’s still alerted Hokkaido)
