Freelancer - General Discussion

Thank god you said this - I’ve been sat here talking myself into buying a new tv because I can’t read a thing.

A helpful tip: To get the “Strelok” challenge for getting 100 target headshots with the Druzhina 34, you don’t need to only use the basic Druzhina 34, you can use the silenced Arctic version and the kills will still count toward the challenge. I assume the DTI and Scrappy variants also count too.

Also, I like that the Collector’s Coin is a reskin of the ICA Performance coin so I at least have it unlocked in some form (I still would like to be able to unlock it in the main game for completeness’ sake but oh well)

Question. If you kill a false syndicate member you get - 1000 merces?

To me having any penalty there wouldn’t bother me because I’d want to clear the mission at any cost. I will be rewarded a new weapon/tool, which is probably worth more than my payout. Plus it would be one more step closer to completing the entire campaign.

So why wouldn’t you still go in there in a controlled aggro manner?
I haven’t player for long so maybe I am missing something?

Also, why do I keep being rewarded a tonne of merces by hospital bed? Where does that come from?

Ok, I’ve finally got a chance to start playing, and I have a question, since I never saw anyone in the CTT actually solve this: how the fuck are you supposed to open safes? It says to use your camera to scan for nearby clue, but like what? Am I looking for numbers written down somewhere? How “nearby” are we talking?

[EDIT] And of course not fifteen goddam seconds after I post that, I figure it out. :man_facepalming:

I’ve not played it yet but got a quick question, I’ve just switched to playing the game on PC, and my account is pretty bare bones at the moment. Will the fact that I have pretty much zero progression throughout the main game affect freelancer at all?

Going to call it a night fellas, been a pleasure hearing from you all! Feels like I’m back in school playing games with my mates again.

I unlocked the helicopter but can’t seem to find it. Anyone know where I’d find it tomorrow?

47 catching a ride in IOIs version of a C-130!!! Fucking awesome!!! I still haven’t unlocked the bathroom for him yet, but I am loving all this stuff !

Ok, I’ve picked my first contract and completed my first mission, and it went as well as I could have ever expected. I went for an assassination syndicate; it was The Contractor, perfectly bland title for my own first target.

The selectable maps were Paris, Chongqing, and Hokkaido, which is great because I wanted my first mission in Freelancer to be in Paris; I’m gonna go to Hokkaido next, and finish in Chongqing, making it appropriate that someone is trying to start an assassination business in the place where the ICA died.

My first kill in Paris was with the stethoscope garrote, and the second was a shot between the eyes with the Classic Baller. I cracked the safe and KO’ed the courier to get extra Merces.

My only regret is that I could not fulfill all optional objectives on this playthrough, as I expected, because I could not yet afford a sniper rifle from the supplier to take out three guards, and I could not locate any remote explosives to kill one of the targets, in which case, instead of shooting the second target, I’d have killed him first with the garrote and blown up my first target afterward. As a result, I missed out on 2500 Merces I could have made.

Otherwise, it was a textbook yet tense SA playthrough, and now I’m off to Hokkaido. And where the hell are those item crates?!

This mode is going to be fun. Having finally played it for a few hours now, I see the gameplay loop and how it’s going to be satisfying and hair pulling depending on the objectives. My Contracts Mode knowledge is helping me immensely despise the added NPCs trying to wander into my crime scenes. I have to keep reminding myself that SA isn’t the priority.

The biggest challenge I’m having is the syndicate missions, as I’m sure it will be for most of us. The random leader tells aren’t always the easiest to see, with issues like necklaces being 90% hidden by scarfs, tattoos being hard to see in dark lighting, and taking so long to narrow down the leader that they’ve walked across the map (and this is on Miami where getting around is tough).

All the footage of 47 traveling between missions is great and had me truly wishing that those Time of Day Mods were used in the Freelancer locations. I want to feel like I’m in a different version of a mission, despite them mostly being the regular ones. Ah well, I guess I’ll have something to look forward to whenever I get a new PC.

Those are my early thoughts anyway. We’ll see how I feel after something goes horribly wrong and I start losing inventory.

We can find two Blood Money’s newspapers in the office.

47 confirmed as not always Silent Assassin. Even outside the tutorial. Heisenberg reportedly in shambles. :stuck_out_tongue:

Also, to follow on the mechanics : I can confirm that the mastery unlocks go into the store / reward pool if they are lost during a mission.

I wonder what the end game strategy will be…

I mean, once we have everything unlocked, we will still risk our loadout. But since everything else will be deplected, we will find them back right away in stores, and the reward crate.

I think I will end up with some relatively cheap equipments (ICA19…) to buy back quickly if lost, and one or two “big” ones (collector tools, or a legendary) to gain back at the first showdown reward.

Scan Tablets or Files around the general area of the safe. Or blow it open with some type of explosion.

Aww, man. You can’t play the default outfit of a map in Freelancer, only your unlocked suits. Dammit, that means anytime I use the suit from Whittleton Creek, it’ll always be the driving gloves version.

Okay I’m only at the beginning of this whole journey and I’ve avoided spoilers and explanations and videos and all that in anticipation of today, and… I’m loving it.

Stray bullet thoughts:

  • PS4 loads SO slow by today’s standards, but boy oh boy do I love me some NEW LOADING SCREENS
  • Freelancer music is awesome.
  • The “Challenge Unlocked Sound” is my favorite thing in any game, so this mode is seriously satisfying my earhole.
  • At least here in the beginning (and this wouldn’t apply to hardcore mode) I’m totally fine with these optional objective payout things being sometimes (most of the time, really) impossible or at least very, very cheesy to achieve. I feel like there were maybe some ahem Power Users of Hitman Forum who were opposed to the incongruity, incompatibility, and mayhaps impossibility of consistently always and forever succeeding in accomplishing the optional objective thingies — but I am totally fine with the roll-of-the-dice nature of it all. This mode is meant to Go On Forever, not for you to see most of it over a weekend. And from what I can tell, hardcore mode satisfies that need. Really, a great gameplay balance overall. Similarly, silent assassin not being much of a thing is just incredibly freeing.
  • So much of the sound mixing in general is just really great. Great job everyone.
  • I’m on the fence about paid cosmetics. On the one hand, I want them all. On the other, it’s predatory game company bullshit, right? But then on the third hand, the price is clear and WYSIWYG — you don’t spend money to buy digital coins to buy cosmetics, with digital coins left over so you need to buy more digital coins to buy something else you don’t really want and did you want that first thing in the first place and fuck why am I spending this money but oooh I kinda want that suit even though I don’t stream or create content it would just be for me and my dog but he’s sleeping and I have so many suits but I don’t have a poncho to pretend I’m in the rain when I could just go outside and pretend I’m in the rain
  • But then even though I appreciate the straightforwardness of the paid cosmetics, you just know there will be more of them, so what, you’re going to spend $30 bucks on 6 cosmetics pack but also complain about the price of Deluxe Escalations and Seven Deadly Sins even though those had content too? I just don’t know how to parse all this Gaming In The Future shit.
  • I will now read previous comments

Well, that second round in Hokkaido was either an unmitigated disaster, or a magnificent success. Everything was going perfectly, albeit slowly, I had cracked the safe and gathered everything I needed to gather, and was in the process of luring some NPCs into an area where I could knock them out and hide them before luring the two targets there to dispose of them, when one of the targets saw me subdue a guard. I hadn’t known it was part of the target’s route. They informed other NPCs before I could deal with them and I had to hide. I waited until that target was alone and just said screw it to stealth and blew him up in the stairwell, and shot the other in the back of the head from a distance where no one saw me, and just left both bodies to be found.

Now, that doesn’t affect the game the same way as before since there’s no SA status when not an objective, but it was a personal failure to me. On the other hand, however, I did complete all the objectives and didn’t lose out on any Merces that could be earned, so it was also more successful than Paris, in its way.

I’m gonna wait until tomorrow after work to begin the showdown. I’m off for the next week after, so I’ll be able to dedicate time to this game.

I mentioned this in another forum post but it probably fits better here. I’d like to suggest adding in briefcases you can choose from your wardrobe, since otherwise our opportunities to obtain one of the most iconic pieces of Hitman gear is limited, and we aren’t even able to choose its appearance from the several different ones we can unlock in the main game. Just feels a bit of a waste to not have the extra planning options gameplay wise to choose to take a briefcase with you, and a waste player expression wise to have all these suits but no options in what 47 is lugging around whatever he needs stored in there. I mean, you’re already making cosmetic DLC meant largely for this mode, briefcases may as well be part of it too imo.

Alright, I’ve made it through 2 Syndicates, haven’t died yet (but had a few close calls), and just unlocked the Mastery 6 Upstairs floor. Woo!

I’m really loving this mode. The improvisational nature of using map knowledge (but finding out IOI removed some items) or trying to set up the perfect kill for an objective, or just exploring the map to find item crates and special items, is really fun.
Plus, using Hitmaps (on the rare occasions it lines up with FL maps) makes me feel like a true solo espionaging assassin.

I think some missions can suck you in too much and I personally have spent way more time on a few missions than I’d have liked, but I was enjoying it so I guess that’s what matters.

The bread and butter missions are fun, and a great way to replicate Contracts Mode without that pesky searching, and some added objectives to push you into new corners.
The Leader missions are also pretty fun, though a lot of them roam super freely and it can be annoying when one decides to waltz into a restricted area or past a frisk point.

I also kind of like how IOI have retroactively added a bonus to the old Hitman 3 Deluxe Pack, giving you more decorations in the mastery track. That’s very nice.

In terms of some issues, I’d say

  • Challenges are very broken. Every time you start at the Safehouse or on a mission, it always counts up the current totals of weapon milestones, no matter if you took one out of the House or not. I just saw it count up to X weapons owned back at the House, I don’t need it again!
  • Some challenges are totally broken and just aren’t tracking correctly (which is a boon in some situations)
I got a “eliminate a leader in the middle of a meeting” by drowning him in an isolated toilet! Riddle me that
  • I’m honestly a little torn now on the penalty against Suspects killed. Though mostly due to the amount.
We get a small 50 off for civilians, but 1,000 for Suspect Targets? When there’s even challenges that reward Merces for kills on potential Suspect Targets, but that huge amount negates 60% of it!

It’s been a very fun (and pretty difficult) time tonight, and I think that’s great. I love how I have access to all of my suits too!
This is gonna be fun. I hope I don’t find out the Merces Half bug is still there when I start up FL tomorrow…

I’m enjoying Freelancer so far (didn’t play CTT). This evening I completed two Syndicate contracts. In both Showdowns, I made some mistake which resulted in the various suspects starting to flee. My reaction was to start gunning down suspects before they could escape. Luckily, each time, the first suspect I killed happened to be the target. Can’t keep letting that happen
