Freelancer - Pre-Release Discussion

I have argued that H3 was short on content upon release. It’s a good game, but 5 maps was just not really justifying its price. With both Ambrose and Freelancer being included in H3 for free, it looks like it might even exceed the previous two games in terms of content. It just took 2 years to get there.

Very nice, IO.

Can someone be able to clear this up for me I know that there’s like groups of people you take out but they say the targets are randomised so does that mean

  • RANDOM NPC
  • FUGITIVE LIKE MISSION
  • VETERAN LIKE MISSION

It seems very confusing I’m hoping it isn’t just random people in maps already because then it’ll be very disappointing but I could kinda see the veteran way working too

My disappointment lies in IOI giving us the expectations, by providing semi-specific times when we could expect this, only for it to turn out, after waiting the better part of a year, and twice being given a certain time of year when they were expecting to release it, that it’s actually going to be released more than a year after they announced it to begin with. If they had simply said it was coming sometime in Year 2, and not narrowed it down twice to “spring” and “later in the year,” then I would be far less upset about this reveal that, despite what they’re trying to bill it as, it won’t actually be in Year 2.

I’m fine with the wait itself; it’s the fact that we were given timelines twice now, and in both cases, it’s at practically the last minute that we’re told that it’s still gonna be months away again. Hell, if they had said, two weeks after Ambrose dropped, that they’d decided on January, I’d have been less upset, because I’d have not spent another three months getting more anxious as the newest time given approached.

That is why I’m upset about my expectations being met, because I was twice given those expectations and allowed to keep them for months on end, when I could have had those expectations reasonably tampered far sooner. I’ll calm down in a while, just like I did last time, and my expectations will build again toward the new date, but for now, I am just so tired of last minute changes to schedules that I am given by others.

My question is: would you still provide bug fixes to the game even if there wasn’t an official Year 3 of new content?

Because obviously you’re reducing the possibility of bug fixes for Freelancer by doing extensive testing (both internal and external), but something will surely slip through as it always does, some really weird edge case no one ever thought of.

It would be nice to get some reassurance that the game will still get bugs fixed (even not Freelancer related) and we won’t get something like the Feeding The Birds challenge in Hitman 2.

@AnthonyFuller I wish I could give your post more than one like. These are my thoughts exactly.

Before everyone (too late I know) starts having histrionics about this, he didn’t mean to say that they were still deciding whether to have a year 3 or not, he meant that the content is still TBD. I have zero doubts that they will still have a rotation of Elusive Targets, arcade packs, patches and other content.

What do you mean by this?

Travis you did a good thing to pushed next year

Better yet, a simple yes :smirk:

My expectations have been close to zero, since I personally need to know what the exact changes to the levels will or will not be in order to decide whether I’m hyped or not, so the delay doesn’t bother me (not to mention I have a bunch of real-life issues to deal with in the next four months, so at least it won’t distract me).

And like others have said, better if it’s polished upon launch (though I’m sure there will be issues regardless), otherwise people would yap again about a (yet another) botched up release.

Also, we’re getting Freelancer much later than expected, but we also got Ambrose much earlier than expected, so they basically just switched places :man_shrugging:

Amen to that, brother. There are bugs and there will be bugs even after FL releases, testing notwithstanding. I hope we get quite a few bug fixes before FL comes out, and other afterwards, whether we have a Y3 or not.

Also, as a 20-year veteran of the series on PC and a HMF Herald, I will be utterly devastated and heartbroken if I don’t get “selectively invited” for the beta testing :sweat_smile::sob: (I know I said I have real-life stuff to deal with, but it’d be for the greater good )

People will yap about literally anything that they think is some sort of moral injustice to them. I’m still baffled at the Steam launch at how some poeple were expecting it to be discounted although in reality, that makes no sense. You waited a year because “epic bad lul”, why do you expect it to be discounted? (You here isn’t directed at you, just the people who complained).

Anyway, I digress.

Travis or Clemens did say that the next patch will be one that includes bug fixes. But they’ll likely never get every single bug for obvious reasons.

I mean, were you chosen in March? I’ll just bring in a quote from the blog post:

You’ll hear from us again on 27th October, when we will share all the details about the HITMAN 3: Freelancer Closed Technical Test, including when it starts, how to get access, what’s available and how long you can play. Stay tuned for more details.

Now that how to get access is what intrigues me the most. To me, it indicates that there would be some sort of application process or something. If it is that, I’d apply, but with my history… not sure I’d be allowed to. Travis, please, lets make up, I’d love to open some sort of official dialogue, I have many questions.

Travis said you can’t apply, they will be the ones selecting who will join :pensive:

slightly similar iconography doesnt constitute a rehash

Ah he did, my apologises, that “how to get access” is a little misleading then since they said they’d be in touch.

Edited my original message to add a quote from that response.

It is a bit strange to say as a statement, since judging by Travis’ comment, it sounds like the official announcment is going to be “Freelancer will be entering into a Closed Technical Test next month for “select individuals”. Keep an eye on your inboxes for more details if you’re chosen!”
When “how to get access” sounds a lot more like “there will be a sign-up form for random access that we will detail later”

But it’s not a last minute change if there was never a release date in the first place. I could understand that if they would have said “the game comes out in november” and suddenly they delay it to january.

I just can’t understand this huge disappointment so many people have now because of something we never got promised in the first place :woman_shrugging:

I have plenty of other games to play while waiting for Freelancer, especially seeing as it is free.

Glad the mode is getting proper attention with scope increases and third party testing.

I feel like even IOI didn’t know Freelancer was going to balloon into this type of project when they announced Year 2. Hopefully the extra time reinforces a smooth launch in January.

Aye, true. Can’t please everyone.

I agree that it doesn’t make sense to expect/get a discount “just because you waited for the Epic exclusivity to end”, but I did personally expect the game to have a tiny discount (10% or so) strictly because it was a year old by then and there had been precedents in similar cases (e.g. Metro: Exodus if I’m not mistaken).

Oh, definitely. I mean there are always some kind of bug fixes in the major patches. I was mainly referring to fixes of issues that have been in the game since launch, or even since H2. Some are really way overdue.
