Freelancer - Pre-Release Discussion

I think depends. Like, if youa lready got plenty of stuff and all the Merces you could need, you eventually stop worrying about losing part of them. Besides if you are going loud, most of the things you’ll need are already in the level, specially shotguns.

Yeah, this caught me off guard as well… I think it would be utterly dumb if you insta-failed after a single gunshot wound, so what I think Clemens meant by that is “dying” on a mission. Only instead of dying and getting a load/restart option, you’ll be treated to a cutscene of 47 wounded back at the safehouse. And I assume failing a mission can happen in multiple ways rather that just being killed. But that’s just my speculation. We’ll have to wait and see.

I might get into intentional firefights just to see bandaged, shirtless 47 bent over a bathroom sink in momentary litost.

Yeah, I think this is almost certainly what is meant. It wouldn’t make much sense for 47 to die and respawn in the mode or something, and the language “dies or is wounded” isn’t used. It makes more sense to explain death in the mode as him being critically wounded but escaping.

IIRC when Freelancer was first revealed, it was confirmed Targets can try to escape the map if alerted. That might be a feature of Freelancer as a whole, or restricted as a trait of certain targets, or only targets in Showdowns, though.

I think some of the hardcore modifiers you can pick prior to missions will probably include unique failure conditions as well, such as suit only or etc. The fact that players need to opt into them implies that there’s a reason not to opt into them, so I’m guessing they will be the dumping ground for all the usual instant failure conditions we’ve become familiar with.

I’m hoping, given how neatly spaced-out the Freelancer blog posts are (and how much of a run-down we just got about how Freelancer works) that we’ll get a more detailed explanation of how the Safehouse works later.

October 6: Intro to the Road to Freelancer posts
October 27: Road to Freelancer 2: How To Play
November: RtF 3: Details on the Test feedback??
December: RtF 4: How the Safehouse Works?

I’m probably wrong on that, but I felt like the details on how the Safehouse works and a a walk-through of that was lacking a bit.
(We’ll probably get a much better sense from details in the Test, but IO might want a more official way to communicate it for people who don’t look up Tech Test footage)

that might be the outfit the bandage patient

Before this reveal, I thought excess Merces would have been used for the Safehouse decor, but instead it is all done as Mastery unlocks. Probably safer for Merces to stay used in Freelancer gameplay rather than running out because you wanted a piano or whatever.

Though everyone will now get unlocks in the same order. Meaning there will probably be similar looking Safehouses early on as well as potentially having to wait for that one piece of furniture you want that happens to be Mastery Level 73 or something.

I’m glad this whole wounded/dying on a mission stuff is coming out right now so at the closed test it can be bringed too so it’s modified to a more pleasant system, just in case indee getting wounded makes you lose everything, wich wouldn’t make sense if you eliminate all the hostlie witnesses before leaving the map.

I’m really hoping with that 999 ammo it means we can choose to bring as much ammunition or as little as we wish into the mission. Those of us that like a bit more realism might go in with 28 or even only 14 total rounds. The jacket can only cover so much (-:

No, it’s probably just for the shooting range and testing weapons.

I hope IOI realizes this and offers some sort of Safehouse “currency system” or points system that can let you unlock what you want, when you want, but only if you reach certain mastery points.

Like, say Mastery 5 gets you 3 customization points, you can use it to customize the fireplace, or the kitchen, or something else. Then, Mastery 7 gets you 3 more points, and if you saved up all 6, you can unlock the library… and so on.

It’s that, or “Mastery 5 gets you the Living Room Collection #1!” Where you get multiple pieces of decor to mix and match, so there’s at least some small variation at first.

I mean, it was already canon that Diana really did go after the scum of the earth in contracts anyway, hell in Mendoza, Tamara literally calls her actions “Her own [Diana’s] brand of vigilante justice” when talking about her time at the ICA. So yeah, we have kind of always been an anti-hero in the way you’re saying. Just from WOA’s main story, we have:

  • A power couple who controlled an information racket and spy ring (Victor and Dalia)
  • A corrupt general (Reza Zaydan)
  • Poison in the legal system (Ken Morgan and Yuki Yamazaki)
  • A terrorist who blames everyone but himself for their mistakes (Sean Rose)
  • An inventor complicit in a War Crime (Robert Knox)
  • The Head of a cartel that frequently maimed subordinates, supressed the local village to appear generous, and get into gang wars (Rico Delgado)
  • Janus (The First Constant, and all the baggage that entails)
  • A pair of socialites who disregard local cultures to satisfy their own treasure hunting kicks (Zoe and Sophia; note that while they’re not ICA targets, Diana’s venomous hatred for them in the briefing really says a lot about their view of them).

And that’s not going into the Legacy targets where we have the likes of Pedophile ring-leader (Alvaro D’alvade), or any other of the Mob Bosses we’ve take down over the years. The games have always leaned more into the anti-hero side of things, in part because it’s really easy to want to kill someone who’s morally bankrupt (that and Bosco, who NEVER. SHUTS. UP.)

You can say Yuck now.

I was joking, but Freelancer does escalate in difficulty so fits the standard definition of an escalation.

I also didn’t say escalations were bad content, or that it being like that is inherently a bad thing.

I wonder if this mode will be a way for us to earn/unlock more suits? I’m sure it will be, maybe in some way.

I don’t know if this will also allow for suit customization. I mean rather than Suit X, with or without gloves.

There should be shirts, jackets, coats, ties, gloves, hats, glasses… Oh yeah. Pants! Shoes too. :face_exhaling: And allow for various combinations for us to look as cool or awful as we want.

But some combinations probably shouldn’t be possible. Or if you have whichever costume like Santa or the blue flamingo. You’re obviously not (or, should not!) add a hat or coat. Maybe glasses. But anything would be buggy and clip into the other item.

I’m not going to put any hope of it happening with FL. Maybe some of us can push for it if we actually do get a Year 3.

Yeah, she’s the fucking problem, as Edwards touches on in Sgail.

Edwards: “Has Miss Burnwood’s sense of justice rubbed off on you, I wonder?”
47: “Just keep moving.” (i.e., “Yes, but I don’t want to admit that.”)

Freelancer is seemingly 47 choosing his targets, not the ICA or Diana, and he’s seemingly specifically choosing outright career criminals. It would seem 47 is now just a beautifully bald Batman (Batcave and all) who has the common sense to take out the trash (unlike Batman). He’s no longer a guy simply killing because it’s his purpose, his passion, his art; no longer an indiscriminate force of nature; and I find that to be unfortunate.

You listed targets you position as legit baddies. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be legit baddies to kill. I’m saying that I prefer a reasonable mix of legit baddies, morally grey targets, and the occasional morally good-leaning or undeserving target, as opposed to entire campaigns of career criminals.

Exactly. It’s harder to convey those of 47’s kills which would give players pause because of the target(s) being undeserving of death.

I love The Icon precisely because that motormouth motherfucker Dino absolutely did not deserve to be murdered, but that’s just the brutal nature of the trade. I’ve seen the sentiment that killing Dino is unenjoyable precisely because he’s undeserving of death, and that to me provides a sublime meta challenge.

Oh, and Janus Did Nothing Wrong™.

Umm, would a dedicated topic that… boils… down whether 47 is a hero or bad guy, or a tool of Diana or not be better?

I did wonder that, but I’m also aware that IOI pick every word very carefully on reveals. It would surprise me if getting wounded forfeited the mission. You’ve only got to look at leaderboards to see that the vast majority of players don’t seem to care about finishing with SA ratings. I guess time will tell.

Do we know if Diana won’t be involved in Freelancer? You could see her and 47 forming a new partnership to take out these syndicates after they meet up in the fuck cabin.

Diana said “welcome to Sapienza” in the video, so…

He’s choosing them from among a list of dossiers. Who gave him the dossiers? Diana. There’s not gonna be anyone innocent among them.

In any event, it’s not necessarily that 47 and Diana go after bad people; they go after people who think they can’t be touched, who think they can do a thing and get away with it. That typically involves people who are actually criminals, but some who haven’t actually done anything to deserve death, like Dino Bosco and Penelope Graves, can still make the list because they don’t think there’ll be consequences for their choices. That’s what 47 and Diana see themselves as; punishment when you thought there’d be none. That leaves the door open for future installments to have 47 go after “innocent” people, so long as they’ve pissed someone off in some way and think they’re gonna get away with it. Plus, there’s always the fact that 47 sometimes can’t allow potential witnesses to live, like the courier, reporter and priest in Blood Money.
