Ok, I gotta call bullshit on this, and on everyone who is getting on Sarandon’s case about it.
She did not call or or compare those cops to fascists. What she said, was that this was what fascism looks like, and believe it or not, there is a world of difference in those statements. What she’s pointing out is how the obsession in America, primarily on the Right, for there to be these huge police forces that are absolutely essential for keeping back those daily waves of horrible, violent criminals that live in every city in the country. And yet, here is an image of all these cops who are not out protecting the streets and citizens from crimes and attending a big ceremony instead, because it was determined that they weren’t needed that day. She’s positing the notion that perhaps there are other times, perhaps many times, when all those cops still are not needed, or perhaps we just don’t need that many. Perhaps it’s every day that we don’t need that many cops. Ergo, the idea of having this massive but unnecessary police force at all times and the fiery rhetoric that is always screaming that we need to have it, particularly when it targets a population’s marginalized groups, is a key component of a fascist society.
But of course, people on both sides are calling her out because nobody, it seems, is educated enough to understand the nuances of language! Or, at least, everybody is too eager to be angry about something from one moment to the next to consider such things even if they are educated in them!
this is a huge blow for boris. if you don’t know, munira has been boris’ policy chief since he was mayor of london. she is very pro-culture war (ye gads, i hate that term), a brexiteer, doesn’t believe in institutional racism, pushes for the bbc to be more right-wing, and - oddly - is an ex-communist.
i’ve said this before (and i’m most definitely not one prone to conspiratorial thinking), but this sudden sea change of the media’s opinion about boris, the energy put into sustaining it, and the appearance of fresh scandals on a near daily basis to fuel it, seems really fucking sus. he was untouchable 6 months ago.
You just now realised how bad your country’s media is? British news media has always been fucking shite and they have always determined who sits in 10 Downing. Johnson has stopped being useful so Murdoch isn’t going to waste any more resources propping him up.
uh no.
i do love chatting with you, man, but could you at least try being a little less patronising please?
murdoch isn’t the only one at play here, hence my concern over coming across ‘conspiratorial’.
I didn’t mean to come across like that.
True but Murdoch has always been the worst of the worst when it comes to bad faith journalism. He still owns much of the printed and screened media landscape in the UK, USA and Australia which gives him a lot of power. Far more than any other media group in England even the one your government owns. Yes there are people that are just as bad in the UK but Murdoch is the worst of the worst and he is the most visible source of the problem.
this isn’t really like ‘97 when blair got in bed with murdoch though. the sea change i’m talking about is from all quarters: barclays, bbc, levedev, rothemere, etc. i’m not disputing murdoch is the biggest dog on the field but this is far more obviously ubiquitous than when he’s campaigned alone.
All of those people are just as responsible, I am just saying that Murdoch is still the top dog and with people mostly watching or reading his news combined with his level of power he has it is obvious that he can pull the most strings at any time.
Everyone in the British media has way to much control over who is the UK PM but if I had to give that level of control and influence a human form it would almost certainly be in the form of a Murdoch. He still has a level of power that even Rothemere doesn’t have although he is a very close competitor.
according to cummings, boris’ u-turns were all dictated by telegraph headlines
Nah, Boris was a walking Telegraph headline even back when he was London’s mayor it seems.
Are we in Hell? I feel like we are in Hell right now.
Ladies and Gentlemen, we got him! Nice to see the US forces chose to minimise casualties instead of bombing those families to caliphate kingdom come.
I am sure Conservatives are still angry at Biden. “Brandon should have drone-striked the kids instead of endangering our brave troops!”
Like wow, wipeout!
Scotty meant literally, their care for the reef literally better than nothing and even then I highly doubt that claim.
Really Graun? Had to use the phrase “blew the whistle”?
Gonna start calling shit like this Realitypunk. You see something cyberpunk but you go “Oh shit this is real life now” it means it is realitypunk.
If we are wrong then we are going to look really stupid.
The upcoming decades will be turning points for many in space. China is working on it’s space station, NASA will work with an existing ISS module later on. Russia also wants to become indiependent with an own station. And Europe might fall behind without own big projects.
Carrier rockets like Boeing’s SLS for the NASA is struggling to fix issues while purely commercial companies like SpaceX are quite successful.
When browsing the list of upcoming space stations, one will notice most are private projects.
I knew the private sector will grow, but it is sad so many roll their eyes when they hear about the price tag of publicly founded science projects like the James Webb telescope while we spend tens to hundrets of that tax money for so many bad things. And the space, the place we were able to show we can work together as nations, will be less of that and more of national projects.
Wonder if the reason the press is turning on Boris Johnson as well is due to how much the cost of living is going up. It has been said that often the economy is a massive thing when it comes to reelection and with energy prices up and inflation at its highest point in 30 years, alot of people are going to struggle, even with a slight boost in the minimum wage.
Next election is booked for Thursday 2nd May 2024. We’re only halfway through this term of parliament, and I really doubt the Tories are going to move it any closer. Can’t see Johnson surviving for much longer surely, if purely by Tories who want to have a chance of winning the next election.
In the best case scenario for Tories, keeping Boris as their candidate will split the Conservative vote, with only the fiercely loyal Conservatives backing him, whilst everyone on the fence will very likely vote for another party.
He cannot win another election, even if he survives until 2024, there is a 0% chance that the Conservatives will keep him as their candidate
It does seem like Johnson himself will never step down himself. I’m guessing it will be the 1922 Committee who will be the ones to bring him down. Doing a quick Google search, ITV News reckons that at least 20 letters of no confidence have been submitted and that 54 are required from Tory MPs before they can begin the next stage. Interestingly, leader of the Scottish Tories, Douglas Ross, is one of the few to pubically state they’ve sent a letter. Kindof highlights just how unpopular Boris Johnson is up here, the Scottish Tories being at least smart enough to try and distance themselves from him.
I would certainly hope that if the MPs voted no confidence in Boris Johnson and triggered an internal leadership election Johnson would have the sense to leave then. But I could imagine Boris Johnson hanging on until the bitter end.
Candice Bergen, MP for Portage-Lisgar was elected as interim Conservative leader yesterday.
it’s been going on for months, though i think there was talk about the price hike around octoberish?
It has been but it feels like it is coming to a head at the current moment since Johnson and Rishi Sunak have had to stand by their decision to raise the National Insurance tax and just announced they have substantially raised the energy price cap regulators can charge their customers. Even some measures to help the public like a one off energy refund, it is obvious everyone, especially the poorest, are going to be hit badly, especially by the time next Winter rolls around.
yeah, true.
three other senior aides resigned since i posted the first. at least two of them are related to the parties.
