The thing is, an advanced AI has no need to wipe out humans on its own. The survival reason given to SkyNet and Hal 9000 doesn’t really have a basis because survival is an instinct that organic lifeforms built up over billions of years of evolution along the path from single cells. A computer system has not had such a history, and so doesn’t really have any basis for a desire to preserve itself, unless we should program that into it. So I doubt we’d get a genocidal AI that decides to wipe us out to save itself or because it feels it’s a superior lifeform.
Given what we’ve seen with these learning AI, they tend to say the things they say and do the things they do through observing us, doing what they think we would do or say, or what we would want them to do or say. So, suppose they should get the idea that we humans want them to use our nukes and our automated machines to wipe us out/enslave us, simply because we’ve made so much material about scenarios doing exactly that, that they decide that that’s what we’re asking for? It would make any outside observing aliens feel less appalled and more embarrassed for us, like we literally did it to ourselves on so many levels, it’s more humiliating than horrifying.
The Sarah Connor thing was just a joke.
I don’t expect ChatGPT to become an existential danger. But it is obvious that whatever is invented, it will be used for tasks we might disagree with. The only limiting factor here will be that big AI models like this one will always be a product as a service. Nothing a group of scammers can run and teach in secret to cause larger damage, even if the infrastructure to run it would be affordable for such a group some day.
THE HAGUE (AP) — The International Criminal Court said Friday it has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for war crimes because of his alleged involvement in abductions of children from Ukraine.
Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office of the President of the Russian Federation also has a warrant, for the same charges.
A UN backed report found other potential war crimes, but the abduction of children is the one with enough evidence to call for Putin’s arrest by the ICC.
Related : Xi and Putin are to sign a declaration of deeper ties next week. according to Moscow. This can become a signal to China of the risk of this association.
That’s what the Government wants you to believe!
i was joking if you couldn’t tell, i have a life and see the thing called a sen…san…son of whatever they call it
To give a bit of an idea : this is the filtration system that was put in place by Russia on the occupied territories last year.
The same structure was then used (already was to be honest) to deport thousands of children.
This does not mean that this war crime is the only one commited by Russia.
This means that the abduction, and deportation of children has enough proof, and more importantly, links and intent to and from the Kremlin to hold Putin to it.
The largest burden to the ICC is to link the intent of the actions to the accused. Most accused will either deny knowledge of what their troops were doing, or will deny true intent under the “messiness of war”.
This is also meaningless so long as Putin doesn’t step foot outside Russia. If they ever finally overthrow him and he runs, there will be an official reason for authorities anywhere to try busting him, but so long as he’s ensconced in his homeland, this isn’t really gonna change anything.
Meanwhile, we’re still awaiting a Trump-appointed federal judge’s ruling on a case seeking to revoke the FDA’s approval of mifepristone.
It’s not an anti-abortion movement. It needs to start being referred to as what it is: it’s a we want women to die movement.
Let’s fucking hope so.
I’d also note that this story popped up yesterday.
This is possibly the last report the IPCC will issue before we hit the 1.5C threshold, after which damage to the climate will rapidly become irreversible. Temperature has already increased 1.1C above pre-industrial levels and if current trends continue, we’ll hit 1.5C around the end of the decade.
It’s already irreversible, at least on any meaningful timescale.
I love watching conservatives fight each other.
On Twitter, Trump supporters are pissed at the DigSantis. IIRC, it was Trump who started throwing insults at Francesca first, so why are they so offended?
Well, the New York grand jury isn’t meeting today and tomorrow’s meeting is on standby, so there’s a decent chance the doorknob isn’t getting indicted this week.
The NY grand jury, of course, is only considering his payout to Stormy Daniels. It doesn’t have anything to do with his other fraudulent business practices, his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, that pesky insurrection on Jan 6 or his possession of classified documents. Though in regards to the latter, it seems a federal judge has pierced attorney/client privilege with two of his lawyers, ordering them to comply with subpoenas after Trump deliberately misled them.
Last week it was revealed, however, that Alan Weisselberg’s former daughter-in-law also testified to this same grand jury. Her testimony has never been revealed to have anything to do with the Stormy Daniels stuff, but rather to the business practices cases that are already going on and that Weisselberg has already been convicted on. So it is possible that the Manhattan DA is pursuing more than just the hush money payments, and that those payments may have also been used to cover up a second crime, which rises beyond misdemeanor and into legitimate criminal territory. So this may be more serious than most of us are currently projecting, although still less serious than what Georgia and the DOJ are looking into. Still, goddammit, can they get on with it and indict him if they’re gonna do it, already?! Let’s get it started!
That sounds interesting. I would love it if you provided a source.
Ugh, nevermind. It turns out that she was there testifying to a separate grand jury on the same day, and the stories got lumped together and my usual source hasn’t reported on it yet, so I didn’t know that it had been debunked until I went looking for it. It’s still possible and even likely that Bragg is going after more than the hush money considering the nature of most Trump crimes, but it won’t be involving anything Jennifer Weisselberg said last Monday. Here’s the clarifying link.
Johnson has been forced into defending himself at the committee investigating Partygate. Hopefully, this will see him suspended and finally put an end to any political value he has, although judging by some of the newspaper headlines, it’s clear some are still hedging their bets.
So the Tuesday surprise was a crock of shit, but at least one guy’s not disappointed after it all.
