I think it is more of an end-of-an-era sort of thing. I am no fan of billionaires but Buffet seemed to have a preternatural grasp of the market and never showed any sign of wanting to slow down so retiring out of the blue like that is still kind of weird.

All of the pearl-clutching that we couldn’t possibly bear living another year under Old Man Biden’s perfectly boring presidency, and right now, we are actually in the worst case scenario of what would happen if a demented selfish old orange asshole was acting erratically, alienating our allies, destroying the economy and acting like a fascist, and if his party was too chickenshit to stand up to him.
Well, at least we know which prison to throw him in after his presidency.

Did not expect this.
The election was anonymous, so nobody knows who it was. Usually this step is a safe thing because settling on who to elect for chancellor is part of the previous coalition talks. So in the past most of the coalition with the majority votes for the candidate, most of the opposition votes against.
But this time enough of the coalition did not vote for him to not reach the majority. He lacks six votes. While every member of the parliament was present, nine votes were missing.
Within two weeks this is redone and Merz needs to reach >50%. If that fails, other candidates can join, including from the opposition. After this third election the Federal President can decide if the relative majority of the winner is enough to be the chancellor. If not, Germany is reelecting.

This is so silly… the guy couldn’t find 11,000 votes in Georgia but he thinks he can outfox Hollywood bookkeeping? He’ll be lucky if he can prove a movie was ever made, let alone where.
Also, watch this for a break down of the numerous ways that this is stupid. It’s got reasons most who are covering the story haven’t even considered.
I think in the last few weeks it’s become clear that the man is truly actually insane but of course we won’t be making an issue of it like we made an issue of Biden’s fitness.

Not really? Very boring corporations over people politician, what conservatives used to be before they all turned nutso.
He only looks good between a party that squandered several decades of political capital in just a decade and a party made up of sociopathic neo-Nazis who would be Nuremberg’d if I had my way with it but sadly I don’t.
I expect the worst but I don’t know what form “the worst” will take until it happens. I am not German though, maybe ask @Urben since he is the most politically active German in this forum.

There really is not much to say, he is a very colorless conservative. Merkel kept him out of competition as a successor I had the impression, but as she did that with basically everyone, somebody hat to step up.
But while she took his party chairmanship he left politics and was the chairman of the supervisory board in the German part of BlackRock. So people assume there will be conflicts of interest even though he officially left all positions there.
In the population he is not very liked, though after the last decades he is a chancellor who actually has children and grandchildren so maybe in terms of family politics he can show some empathy.
I personally expect him to be half boring half opportunistic and doubt he will bring a positive turn into our country.
Well, hopefully being boring won’t mean being destructive like the rest of the rightwing psychos, and will still lead to more left-leaning choices in the future just for being so boring.
The last few Conclaves only lasted two or three days. We should be getting our Pope soon.
