I had to think about this question for a long time, really. I know what my answer used to be, but I don’t think it’s the same today as it was even 5 years ago.
My dad was a really strict old-school conservative. He was for small government, low spending, low taxes, basically he just wanted the government to stay as far out of his way as possible. They were fine to make laws at the federal level but they had no business in the day-to-day lives of normal Americans.
I think I agreed with him, overall, for a really long time. When I was able to start voting, I eagerly voted for people like George H.W. Bush, Bob Dole, and then George W. Bush. I was thrilled when Al Gore lost the 2000 presidential race. I voted for McCain over Obama and then Romney over Obama and was disappointed when Obama won (twice).
I hated the Clintons too. I found their ideas to be too overreaching and I listened to radio personalities like G. Gordon Liddy and Rush Limbaugh. I, embarrassingly, even voted for Trump in 2016 because he wasn’t a Clinton and wasn’t a politician.
Then Trump (the first time) started attempting to govern. He was miserable at it. Everything was blamed on Obama. Every tweet, every claim about why COVID was nothing to worry about, every time Trump opened his mouth made me regret that vote more and more.
I wasn’t ready to start decrying the right yet but I wasn’t able to vote for them anymore. I ended up voting for no body for President in 2020. I just couldn’t see my way to casting a vote for a Democrat but I could no longer support the Republican candidate.
Amazingly, Biden turned out to be “not that bad” and I wasn’t particularly harmed by any of his policies. He took what Trump had left him and actually made the country better (although I didn’t want to admit that at the time). Over that four years, watching what happened on January 6, watching the way Trump behaved going into the 2024 election, listening to the conspiracy theories about how the 2020 election was “stolen” from him, just kept pushing me farther and farther away from the right. Once the Republicans started pushing for Christian Nationalism though, that was the last straw. I’ve been an atheist for decades (definitively since about 12 years old, and probably earlier, really) and there was simply no room anymore in the Republican party for me. I was never a member - always identified as Independent. In 2024 I voted for Harris and based on the way that Trump still talks about elections being stolen, I suspect that Harris should have won if the 2024 election was actually fair and if Musk had stayed out of it.
Today, I don’t know where I sit politically, to be honest, but I know that I don’t support this whole “Make America Great Again” movement. I’m sick of billionaires getting everything they want just because they can pay politicians and make donations. I’m sick of Congress refusing to hold the President accountable for anything. I don’t support this pointless war in Iran. I don’t support most of the things outlined in that Project 2025 document. I will vote in November for Democrat candidates down the ticket because I cannot stand the current administration and want them investigated, removed, and prosecuted. They don’t speak for me and they don’t speak for most people in this country anymore.
I’m sure my father, that die-hard conservative would be appalled at what happened to “his” party, but politics is a pendulum and I predict that once Trump 2 is over, we’re going to see a pretty big swing the other direction (maybe even before Trump is gone). I’m hoping that the pendulum balances out somewhere towards the middle eventually, but I don’t have high hopes for that at the moment.
