Inventory + CHALLENGE cleanup suggestions

Hitman now has 107 suits and probably about 300 weapons at this point and i think there should be more categories and a simplification of the inventory system. I have some suggestions but idk if theyre the best ideas or not theyre just me spitballing:

  1. Have the inventory in rows of 4, not 2: The suits menu in Freelancer already is easier to navigate because you get more real estate to look at everything, by going from one row to 2. now i think that putting in four rows would significantly cut down on clutter

  2. New categories, and resorting old items: The biggest faux pas of the suits inventory specifically is how lopsided everything is: you have 30 suits in the themed category and 6 in most other ones aside from classics. This can go back to a wider point about IO not making enough normal suits and instead going for novelty but i think a lot of themed costumes could be split into other categories. For example

  • A holidays category for all the Halloween and Christmas themed unlocks theyve been releasing every year
  • An ET category for the costumes based off of ETs (Ephemeral, Greek Fire, Fur coat, splitter)
  • A category for sports-themed suits (MMA, the two boxing suits, winter sports suit, even the polar survival gear)
  • A category for Disguises-turned-suits (Super Fan, Plague Doctor)
I think this could future proof the inventory a bit more and stop everything new going into themed
  1. New categories pt. 2: this same principle applies to the weapons, which I feel could do with a ton more categories:
  • i think unsilenced pistols, silenced pistols and dart guns should be in seperate categories. same thing with melee being broken into small blunt, small sharp, large blunt and large sharp, large smgs and small smgs, etc. The big one here is explosives, which should be split into three categories at least: explosives, concussives and flash
  • Then instead of just being alphabetized there should be sorting within these categories based on stats. For example: ICA19 first, Silverballers second, Pocket guns third, Krugers last
  1. Ability to hide and favorite items would be a great one, if you favorite an item it either goes to a category that the inventory defaults to whenever you open it or it goes to a menu that you can click a button to take yourself to and if you click hide on something you need to press a different button to bring up the hidden menu. you could even use this like it’s two separate menus

  2. Some reskins should just be in a drop down menu. For example instead of having the trinity weapons take up three slots why not have them in one slot with a drop down menu or some sort of button you can use to switch the default skin of it? perhaps the inventory can have more of a Freelancer aspect where you can view the model in 3D and that’s where you can switch the skins to see what you like the look of best?

  3. Bring back saving loadouts: I understand and like the system of the game automatically saving loadouts, i really do, but i think this should have always been paired with the option to go back and save a loadout manually. In fact I think this should be doubled down with the ability to save multiple loadouts not just based on location but based off of specific mission. So let’s say you have three slots per mission, you can save the current loadout to one of three slots as soon as you boot up World of Tomorrow, then a different three slots for contracts mode in Sapi, a different three for escaltions in Sapienza, a different three for author, different three for landlslide, different three for ETs/ETA, etc.

  4. Some items are simply in the wrong category imo. The durian should be in poisons, the trendy tourist suit should be in casual, there’s a couple other examples im sure ive missed

  5. The ica ice axe and combat axe recently got added to the pistol section. This is a great change and i think it should be doubled down on. Namely I think that fibre wires and sawnoff shotguns, really anything that can be concealed in your pockets should be open for taking in this slot, or maybe the idea of that being specifically a concealed slot should be abolished and you just have three gear slots and gear can be used to take any pistols, even just starting the mission by having three pistols

  6. some small items still arent concealable or cant be put in hidden stashes, despite being small items

  7. This is a freelancer exclusive issue but i think when you take home a regular item in Freelancer that has a rarity it should be possible to keep it for the next run. There’s so many times ive taken a banana, not used it then finished the mission and had to run upstairs just to get another banana. There’s some other things with Freelancers gear system that are weird (for example, a single sawnoff in ambrose doesnt have rarity and thus cant be taken home and stuff like the poison jar and makeshift explosive dont have rarity either)

so i hope if my ideas, any of them, are practical in any way that @Combatglue can pass them thru because even just one of these changes would make the World of Assassination’s twilight years kick so much ass I will need new buttcheeks

edit: edited to shout out @Rimland’s suggestion

PART TWO: CHALLENGES

It should be in tactical and I will die on that sand dune. (Same for the polar explorer one)

But yeah, absolutely agreed in general. Some categories are just over-cluttered at this point. For melee specifically, I would appreciate sub-categories of blunt, sharp, and strangulation. There’s so much stuff I completely forgot existed just because of how it all blends together.

Completely forgot about that too! Small Blunt, Large Blunt (seth rogan laugh), Small Sharp, Large Sharp, Garrote

Upon further review I feel like i also want to suggest a couple of things regarding the challenges of the game and how they need to be simplified:

The Escalations and Featured Contracts challenge Tracks need to no longer be segregated by map/game. When it comes to escalations there’s:

  • 6 challenges for track one, tied to beating 15 of H1’s escalations, starting at 1, then 3 and then going up in increments of 3 after that
  • 11 challenges for track two, tied to beating 28 of H2’s escalations, starting at 1, then 3 and then going up in increments of 3 after that
  • making for 17 in total and requiring 43 escalations to be completed to tick off every challenge

I think instead the 17 challenges should be renamed and instead of segregated by game/map, they should be part of one big track that goes up no matter the escalation you play: start at 1, then go up in increments of 2 from then on. so the new track would be for 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 18 20 22 24 26 28 30 32 34 escalations, and the rewards would alternate per track. So “Escalations - Track 1, Tier 1” which gives out the Iconator would be renamed “Escalations x1”, “Track 2, Tier 1” which gives out the tripwire mine would be renamed “Escalations x3”, to denote that it’s unlocked thru 3 escalations on any map instead of 1 in specifically H2, etc.

Same goes for Featured Contracts. Currently there’s:

  • 9 for doing FCs in H1+H2 campaign maps, excluding Ambrose. These go up exclusively in incremements of five ending at 45 FCs
  • 8 for doing FCs in H3 campaign maps, + Prologue + Ambrose. These start at 5, then 10 and from then on go up in increments of 10, requiring 70 finished FCs
  • 17 in total, requiring beating 115 FCs

I would again do away with tracks and have the 17 challenges go up in increments of 5 exclusively and again alternate between unlocks, with the Blue Flamingo suit for “Featured Contracts x80” and the Professional Screwdriver for “Featured Contracts x85”

And not only does that make this more manageable in terms of grind, cutting down on 9 whole escalations and 30 FCs but opens up the player to not have to do maps they dont like to get an unlock. And with 31 Escalations in Hitman 3’s maps now counting towards the unlocks this means that you can ignore half the escalations in the game if you only want to get the unlocks. It also makes menu navigation easier, because if youre searching for FCs to tick off challenges it’s a SLOOOOG

This can also tie into a UI overhaul, I for one would like to see it be made easier to access content from anywhere, but I would like to see “Global challenges” - the 7 ET challenges, the 17 Escalations challenges, the 17 FC challenges, the 9 classics challenges, the 13 Arcade challenges, be put into a “Global challenge” counter instead of incorporated onto every map’s challenge pool. They can still be viewable from any map’s challenge screen, just isolate them from counting in the totals. Maybe even with a “Campaign Completion” and “Game Completion” percentage text now added to destinations tab - maybe even a “Freelancer” and “Sniper” challenge counter too. However i would like that game completion and challenge totals not count unless the content is owned. Individual locations that aren’t owned by the player can still show their totals, but for example if you dont own Sarajevo and cant get the two “Controller” challenges the total will be 92/92 (because keep in mind right now it only says 133 challenges because it’s counting the 17 escalations, 9 Classics and 13 Arcade)
