I wonder if there will ever come a day when we have 60fps CGI movies. I’ve found that watching the 30fps shows/movies… I dunno. Just does something to me after a while.
To answer this currently in terms of film and TV the reasons behind this are for longstanding historical purposes, cinema quality, and film stock. That and when it comes to 60 FPS and film it’s considered less engaging to audiences.
24-30 is the standard for a multitude of reasons.
It’s optimal for filming and editing in terms of memory, it unironically makes whatever you’re watching more quality, and for example if something like the extended cut of Lord of the Rings if they were 60 FPS 4K it would most likely be split into two minimum BD100 Triple Layer discs which hold massive amounts of information as is, but are prone to have issues because a 4K player might not have a strong enough laser to read a triple layer disc
So the simple answer is it’s just it’s a logistical nightmare as is that would only be heighten if the fps standard shifted to 60 FPS
Are people okay if I rename this thread to the General Movie News Thread? Doesn’t totally have to be about unreleased, upcoming films…
- Yes
- No
Anyway, screw you Minecraft Movie Director.
You should clean up these theatres yourself, see how you like it.
(Goddamn internet enabling this behaviour by filming and posting increasingly crazy reactions. It was fun for like, the Day 1 fans I guess. Leave it there.)
I dunno. The name seems too similar to General News Thread, which is a different topic, thus it can lead to some confusion. Plus we do have “Movies you’ve just watched” thread, where we don’t necessarily have to post about new movies. I think a rename is fine, but I can’t think of a better one right now.
That one’s more for like reviews and discussion rather than news though right?
@TheChicken
Why not just “Movie News Thread”?
Come to think of it, we do have both “Game News Thread” and “Upcoming Game Thread.” And I’ve seen many posts about new games in the first one as well. The Upcoming Game Thread is not as popular as the News thread anyway. This is also primarily a videogame forum, so I can see that being separate discussions. For movies, maybe we need just one for any sort of new information.
Oh yeah, we do have Videogames we’re playing thread as well. These are for sharing thoughts and reviews. Thanks!
Also I’m so glad I don’t live in America (just in general, but in particular) when I see these kinds of cinema “experiences”/nightmares.
Hmm… Since I can’t think of a better topic to post this in I’ll do it here.
#movies_you’ve_just_watched
Or I’m planning on watching.
After watching a video on Hideo Kojima’s predictions, one game they discussed was an older game called ‘Policenauts’. It seems like a game that gets into some very interesting… or just messed up/disturbing topics. So I’m planning on watching a video on it. Looks to be about 11 hours, so I’ll need to watch it in shifts over a period of days.
Edit: 15 minutes into it. It appears to be a point-and-click story where the main character narrates information about items you can click on. I believe there will be more interactive sections later.
Edit2: In true Kojima fashion he seems to borrow inspiration from movies. Like Escape from NY = MGS Solid Snake… Well, Policenauts definitely borrows from Lethal Weapon.
In principle, I’m not against it. However I also see it as a slippery slope, there isn’t really anything wrong with the name. I don’t want it become a “new” norm. However you are the creator of the thread and if you find it better reflect the thread, you can do so.
So let this be a trial.
This feels… like I’m walking on thin ice or something…
Thank you, oh great Norseman…
Sure, I guess my main reasoning is that we have a thread to talk about Movies You Have Seen, and Movies that Are Coming Up, and I’d rather not splinter that even further with a General Movie News thread, if this thread mostly already fits that purpose.
It’s one thing to change the name and theming of a thread to a completely different topic, but thanks for “allowing” me to just nudge this into both being Present and Future news for films.
I find even the Game News Thread and Upcoming Games Thread tend to mix up both general gaming news and specific news relating to upcoming games and announcements.
Ehh, anyway, this thread is better now.
I hope they cast Vin Diesel when it gets going, just so he can say, “The thing about a Street Fighter is…”
I know it’s a marketing fluff piece, but I enjoyed this little video. Nice to see how many physical sets and practical effects are being used for the new Superman movie. Makes a nice contrast compared to Snyder’s movies which felt very green screen heavy. Not sure how to feel about them trying to hype up the new DC cinematic universe, feels like tempting fate, and I can’t help but question how much appetite audiences have for them anymore. But I enjoyed all 3 Guardian of the Galaxy movies. I’m not sure if it can hit the heights of the first 2 original Superman movies, but I feel confident that James Gunn can deliver a good Superman tale. Although anything is better than Man of Steel in my opinion.
Marvel’s Thunderbolts* is coming out soon, starring Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, aka the new Black Widow.
Fun bit of Hitman-related trivia here: the character name Yelena Belova, as well as a few other Marvel names, are used in Contracts Mode as names for a few NPCs found at the IAGO auction in Paris.
I wonder if it will be just for the 1st/original game, or will it cover the Turbo version (and outrun the police!) Or perhaps Outrunners with a large/diverse cast of crazy characters.
Also, will they have the OG Ferrari?
I just want a Predator movie to be creepy again, why does every new Predator movie feel the need to make it even bigger and louder than the last? Even Prey was completely action-heavy and had almost no horror elements to it. I guess I’m a little disappointed because I thought that the concept of a movie set on the Predator/Yaujta homeworld sounded interesting. This just looks like a bad sci fi movie.
Predator can’t be horror anymore because everyone knows the gimmick. Each movie tries to introduce a new gimmick to try to make it continue working, but the only thing that’s seemed to stick is that the Predators carry more weapons than seen in the first movie, and they live for hundreds if not thousands of years. Nothing else has struck a chord with audiences, and so it can’t introduce anything new to make it horror without just being a rehash of the original movie, which was already as flawless as such a film can be.
What Heisenberg said. The first Predator (or Alien, Jaws, or even Jurassic Park for that matter) worked because of the fear of the unknown/unseen. Once you become familiar with the looks and gimmick, it just doesn’t work the same way anymore. Not in the films anyway. (And contemporary spoiler-filled internet culture doesn’t help)
I don’t really tink this applies to the First Predator. Well at least not as what I view as horror, like Alien (1979)
Predator (1987) is a mix of different generes, it start out as a typical 80’s macho Action film, full of catchy one liners, muscles galore, firepower and an unstoppable army of gods. Then it switches genres to horror. It’s a more campy horror film, it’s a slasher, it doesn’t take itself serious. It’s not like Jaws, Alien nor The shining. It’s closer to Halloween, Friday 13th and Nightmare on Elm street.
Arnold is for all intent and purpose The final girl in this film. He’s the Laurie Strode of Predator.
They can’t return to the same whel, Predator (1987) is a tongue in cheek commentary of the films that made Arnold and Stallone famous. That era of movie heros is long gone, if they wanted to make a similar film to the original, they would have to take inspiration of how action cinema hero’s works today as well as the slasher genre.
It seems like they are going for a more streamlined approached to the newer films. Personally I welcome it, Prey was way better than it had any right to be and far better then Predator 2 and the rest.
Blumhouse just posted the entirety of m3gan to YouTube for some reason
