Ok, I’m finally watching The Batman right now as I type this, and so far it’s lived up to the hype in all but two things: the ears still make the suit look too weird, and while Batman hitting the same mook ten times is supposed to look badass, it just reenforces how weak and unskilled he is this early in his career, because he had to hit a regular thug ten times to put him down. Beyond that, it’s pretty awesome so far. And what is with the Hitman vibe to this movie? It opens looking through a telescopic lens with Ave Marie playing in the background, and what the Holle is the Berlin rave level doing in this movie?!

I think that was more for intimidation purpose to the rest, to show off some brutality. Trying a little too hard to make a terrifying impression but he’s still a bit of a rookie.

Did anyone else find it odd that the Riddler is actually more stealthy than Batman Vengeance? I was stunned to see him knocking and going through the front door more than once.

Still one of the best Batman Vengence movies though. :+1:

The detective work is top notch. They tried in the Dark Knight trilogy but it was still mostly technology and Bruce’s allies doing half the work. This one has him actually looking and studying, and displaying knowledge of forensics by memory. Far more impressive than his physical methods, but I think it should be in this case.

And this version of Riddler is like the Arkham versions of Riddler and Anarky, combined with Hush.

Watched Good Will Hunting by someone’s suggestion. I liked it for a few factors:

  1. The acting especially with Matt Damon and Robin Williams was exquisite.
  2. It perfectly shows how even a world class genius can’t have a proper life without knowing “what” to do.
  3. It perfectly shows what a motherfuckin civilian slayer the NSA is.

The characters were developed in a contrastive way. On one hand there is Lambo, only caring for the work and using Will mostly for that sense as well. A person who sacrificed a lot just to be able to get the medal. On the other hand, we see Sean. A person with deeper emotional responsibilities who, in opposite, sacrificed the work for his personal life. He might just be a average professor in a community college but he had his good times with his wife who he again sacrificed one of the most important baseball games in history just to grab a beer with.

This has got to be some kind of revenge for the complaints that lead to the revamping. Like, they couldn’t get their first effort in because everyone hated it, so they’re gonna force it on us, somehow, some way, just for that.

We’ve put time and money into this abomination so we are going to use it somehow!

That was a Paramount production though and this is a Disney production. As far as I can tell in Wikipedia, they don’t share any production or animation companies.

This must have just been a really nice idea in the writers’ room, and a huge favour from the Paramount team. Cool!

Oh, come on, you know those people all talk to each other (I say sounding exactly like the prejudiced conspiracy theorists that I despise).

Okay, I just watched the movie because you made me aware of its existance. And let me tell you, this flick is a huge W.

Just a nostalgia based movie filled with meme worthy pop culture references. The huge amount of crossover cameos must’ve cost Disney a f-load of money. And they all work really well honestly. In special, like you mentioned, ugly sonic who actually serves an important part to the story at some point. And the ones who dont are just for shits and giggles.

Midlifecrisis Peter Pan as a bootleg magnate is hysterical. Can’t believe they turned the wholesome child icon into a shady mobster-like badguy. :joy: It makes up for some hilarious and pretty cool moments. Especially the finale was pretty neat.

All in all a pretty good movie for what its worth! Really creative and fun to watch. The jokes land pretty well and if you were/are a Chip 'n Dale’s fan you’re gonna love this. It made me remember how much I loved to watch those classics on VHS as a kid. I had a blast. 8/10

I saw a few MCU movies recently.

First, I finally caught up with Eternals and it most definitely is one of the weaker entries in the franchise. However, there’s actually a pretty good movie in here somewhere but they were so insistent on a flashback structure that it creates a pretty disjointed narrative where everything suffers. Particularly in the first half, which seems to be a flashback every few minutes, momentum and development are constantly interrupted or stopped in favor of dialogue heavy exposition. To make things worse, flashbacks are used so frequently that after the exposition, they’ll then have a flashback scene show you a variation of what they literally just told you a minute ago. I’m giving the movie a 5.5/10 but it could easily be a 7.5 or 8 if it had ditched the flashback structure (with one or two twist friendly exceptions) and instead told the story linearly.

I think this would have allowed the story and relationships to flow and, more importantly, allowed them to cut a lot of the exposition at the same time. They then could have used the saved time to maybe set up a few more scenes to show us character and relationship development, the group growing closer and/or drifting apart (depending on the subgroup), and, most importantly, setting up the climax better by showing them either losing interest in their apparent mission or strengthening their resolve to complete it (again, depending on the character).

As it is, you can get a pretty good idea of individual and subgroup motivations by the end but none of it feels earned. They interrupt their narrative so often and so willingly that, despite some characters and relationships standing out, you don’t really care. They show AND tell so much it starts to feel redundant by the time it should feel epic. I don’t know what’s worse, that the movie is just okay or that it had nearly all the pieces in place to be great but it CHOSE to be mediocre…

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, on the other hand, was a completely different ball game. It could have maybe used a bit more “multiverse” but I was thoroughly engrossed the whole time. I love (and hate) what they did with my girl Wanda and I appreciate the efforts to actually develop Stephen and Christine’s relationship and to give Rachel McAdams more to do than a glorified cameo. It was an improvement on the original in just about every way.

The first movie kind of reveled in its visuals at the expensive of pretty everything except developing Stephen Strange. On the one hand, that’s fine because it was his origin story and he’s a great character. On the other hand, it wasn’t a very interesting story as a result, except for the subversions at the end, and other origins managed to balance things better and more interestingly. This movie used its visuals to tell the story and other characters had arcs independent of Doctor Strange that just happened to interact and intersect with his.

I’m going to give it the 8/10 Eternals could have had. The story dragged a little sometimes (like basically nearly the entirety of the first Doctor Strange) but it doesn’t rely on flashbacks like Eternals and the resolution of the conflict feels more earned even though both antagonists meet oddly similar fates. Also, the scene where Doctor Strange fights a corrupted version of himself with magic music notes may be one of favorite scenes in any MCU movie. I don’t if it was the musical selection or that the second Stephen chose to continue the first Stephen’s Battle of the Bands even though he totally didn’t have to or what but I had the stupidest smile on my face that whole sequence.

More than a number score out of 10, the best way to describe my feelings for this film is to compare them to my feelings for its predecessor. The first Doctor Strange is by no means bad but it’s painfully dull and I only rewatch it if it’s part of a MCU marathon. I would willingly rewatch this Doctor Strange on its own (and plan to) and I can’t think of higher praise, especially compared to the original.

Lastly, my sister and I are catching our mom up on the MCU and we just finished Black Widow. I can’t remember if I already reviewed it here but I’ll just a quick rundown of my feelings after a second viewing. It’s a pretty good sendoff for Natasha, Yelena is a great addition to the franchise, and its credits sequence is one of the best in any MCU film (made better because it’s used for storytelling instead of just bridging the end of the movie and the mid-credits scene). Speaking of the end of the movie, it’s still the only part I don’t like. I will never understand how she got away from Secretary Ross and I suspect the filmmakers don’t either. All they knew is that they needed her to be free to get to Infinity War but had no idea how to do it. Instead of either not having that end confrontation happen or actually trying to come up with a way out (no matter how implausible or convoluted), they opted for an audience choice style getaway. It continues to not sit well with me and it’s a blemish on an otherwise solid film. 7/10

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022)

This is essentially a Who Framed Roger Rabbit for the modern age. Chip and Dale live in a world where animated characters exist alongside regular humans, and they are the actors who played… well… Chip and Dale in the Rescue Rangers cartoon.
That time has passed though, and Chip and Dale are not on speaking terms when a wave of disappearing cartoon characters sweeps California.

The movie (on Disney+) has loads of heart, is funny, fun, and filled with nostalgia and good fan service.
Loads of cameos by different animated characters the cameo by the aforementioned Roger Rabbit was fun, and loads of easter eggs.
A sequence that’s already online as part of the PR for the movie features the original design of Sonic for the Sonic movie, known as “Ugly Sonic” and it was hilarious.

I enjoyed this a lot.

You mean Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Because that shit is timeless.

It’s a great movie, but this contains more modern IP:s is all I’m saying.

Also, did you just correct me on a question mark? Because I spent at least 30 seconds trying to figure out what I spelled wrong, and that’s 30 seconds I’ll never get back.

And the ones in Roger Rabbit are timeless.

No, I accidentally left that question mark in the italics and didn’t bother to move it. The title actually doesn’t seem to have one though it should since it is a question.
