Hit the Road (2021)

A middle-aged couple and their two sons embark on a road trip across the Iranian countryside. Over the course of their journey, they bond over memories of the past, grapple with fears of the unknown and fuss over their sick dog

Panah Panahi, Jafar Panahi’s daughter has started her directing career in the best possible way. She has the same dark-comedy take on realism as his father. There probably were tons of lessons to learn from Kiarostami as well, as he was the king of “happening-on-road” movies in Iran.

Simple, relatable story (sneaking out of the borders for a better future), great choice of actors (doubt any of you have seen them in other movies); the younger son especially did a great job despite being younger than others. Last but not the least, the music. The classic pop tracks were chosen just for the right part and that ending with Ebi… left me speechless.

Watched On the Count of Three. It’s the directorial debut of Jerrod Carmichael and I had no idea it existed until Hulu shoved it in my face a couple of days ago. It is a super dark (like, pitch-black) comic drama about two friends (Carmichael and Christopher Abbott) who enter into a suicide pact and spend one last day together.

It’s a bit uneven in places, but mostly Carmichael does a fantastic job of navigating some very difficult terrain, dealing with mental illness and suicide without resorting to cheap sentimentality or simplistic answers. It’s funny and heartbreaking and emotionally draining.

It’s definitely not for everyone, but I loved it.

Watched Top Gun: Maverick. It still had that sense of

and

But at least they had a reasonable goal this time.

The “hidden nuclear facility”, “sanctioned” and “F-14 Tomcat” makes it really feel like Iran, but the terrain was not fitting. Not sure what was their point.

The point is that you could probably watch the following video 180 times and still have a better time.

You can also look up Ben Stiller’s impersonations of him for SNL. I think he really gets Tom’s mannerisms and inflection down pat even if the voice isn’t all there.

Watched it as a “sunday afternoon to relax after lunch” movie. And the movie does this job marvellously.
Sci fi romcom. The premise is scifi (time loop, basically a modern Groundhog Day), and well executed. But the story is much more romcom : the acts and incidents happen on the characters and their relationships. And so does the climax. It’s still light hearted.
The JK Simmons character is interesting to look at for that : what he appears to be at first (antagonistic to the fun scifi timeloop element) and where he end up being (protagonist of the resolution of the romcom element) could only happen in this kind of movie.
On the technical side : editing is great, especially for the amount of montage/timeloop/same scene under another pov that happens.

Honestly, I recommand. Found it endearing.

I finally saw the Batman. Good flick. I especially loved Penguin and all the scenes shot in Chicago.

I personally don’t like how Gotham looks like every big city in the world since the Nolan Movies… Where are all the Gothic Buildings, giant Statues and Gargoyles? And don’t forget the police zeppelins! I hope one day they will return to the more comic-looking Gotham

Yeah I am a sucker for the Silver Age so my favourite interpretations are either the true classic designs or the newer comic versions which are more grounded in reality yet they have certain flourishes.

I saw Jordan Peele’s Nope tonight.

It was great! Lots of spooky stuff that comes together in interesting ways. Some fun humour as well. Don’t want to spoil too much, but I liked it and I liked the mystery surrounding the main plot.
They kind of reveal the big thing much earlier than I expected. It kind of removes some of the mystery, but makes it slightly bit creepier.

I also kind of “like” how they tied in this spooky B-story about Steven Yeun’s character.

Traumatized as a child, manages to survive an encounter with an angry monkey, keeping it at bay with his signature “friendship fist bump”. But he was changed so much by this, that in the present he can’t help goading a predatory UFO for profit, believing he’s earned its “trust”.
Or at least that’s what I got out of it.

It’s probably worth watching again with subtitles, the movie speakers were quite loud, yet muffled the speech in some parts, made it hard to understand what characters were saying.

So yeah. Better than Us, but I still think Get Out is his best horror flick. Everything about that script and story is so tight, scary, and really satisfying to watch, on the edge of your seat the entire time.

Sounds like a typical case of movie mixing; keep your ‘splosions loud and your characters quiet! :joy:

I just re-watched Analyse This. I had forgotten how hilarious it is. I tend to laugh at the goombas in the serious mobster flicks, so when they are playing it up for a full blown comedy it just had me in stitches. Joe Viterelli is especially humorous. Go watch it if you’ve never seen it!!

Then I watched The Outfit. It’s a sorta artsy movie about a suit maker in Chicago in the 1950s who gets tied up with some gangsters. Simon Russel Beale is always solid and Mark Rylance is excellent as the lead. I can’t say this one will be up everyone’s alley, but it was interesting.

Watched Harold and Maude for the first time in forever. 19-year-old death-obsessed Harold meets and starts a relationship with 79-year-old free spirit Maude. It’s dark (Harold faking his suicide in elaborate ways is a running joke) and funny (Maude has zero fucks to give) and touching (to a degree I probably didn’t appreciate as much when I was a teenager). It’s a great movie about (and for) people who don’t quite fit in.

And the Cat Stevens soundtrack is classic.

I watched Ford vs Ferrari for 3rd time and its racing scenes for more than 10 times.

My best racing movie and one of the best movies of all time. No doubt Damon and Bale are legendary actors but rest of the cast did an awesome performance. The story, action sequence, screenplay and all the technical stuffs were perfectly crafted. Special mention on the Le Mans 66 and Chasing Bandini soundtrack which keeps you thrilled. Additionally rewatched the same on hindi dub and not a single complain on this movie. It is based on true events and persons.

Long story short - it is a must watch for car lovers. FYI @YellowZR1
