Request for Cross-Progression/Cross-Save

I have played 900+ hours on steam, and I would love to be able to load up my console and continue playing there instead of having to start fresh. Obviously would have to re-purchase the game and DLCs but I wouldn’t think twice about that if I could take my progress between platforms

I’ve always suspected that it’s the platforms that block this. If it’s easy for people to take their progress elsewhere, they might lose business. Sony in particular is well-known for this sort of lock-in.

Before comparing to some other hugely popular game from a huge company that has cross-progression, remember neither IOI nor Hitman are so huge.

Not necessarily. Remember the fuss when changing from H6 to H2 and then to H3? IOI had the ability to enable unlimited save migration. They simply didn’t want to trouble themselves.

There is a reason it can’t be implemented now. It could be at the start, but now if you have some progress on PC and some progress on Xbox, which one IOI must choose to as your main save?

We know that saves can be transfered from one console to another with deletion the second save. But we don’t know could both (or even more: Steam, Epic, PS, XBOX, Switch…) saves be joined into one ultramegasave.

Lots of games add cross saving after launch though. But for Hitman, transferring saves isn’t really very useful. This is really cross-platform profile progression in this case, which seems even easier to implement as it’s all on their servers already. And maybe you could just manually select which data you want to use as your main one to overwrite the other progression.

Surely when it loads up for the first time it finds all the saves on your linked platforms and you choose one to be your main save? Porting it and overwriting the others? I don’t think anyone thought they would combine into one super mega save with combined progress

The problem is that it is still overwriting, not the combining.

Example:
You’ve played McGregor on Xbox and got a reward suit for this, but your save file almost clean on Xbox.
But PC is your main file with millions points in stats. And for some reason you’ve missed him there.

Question. Which file would be sacrificed in case of adding cross-platform save? With exclusive unavailable content or with hours of gameplay but without this suit?

Overwriting is not an option. If you want this feature, it must be a combined save from all platforms, not the overwriting save.

True you make a good point regarding the time-limited and missable content, so maybe overwriting is not the best option. Of course the best solution for that would be to remove the FOMO and allow anyone who missed any content to unlock it again at their leisure, but that’s another discussion.

Although, I also don’t see why they wouldn’t be able to simply do it that way and merge them so that all unlocks/completions from any linked accounts, which are all tied together by an overarching IOI account anyway, could apply to a cross-platform ‘master profile’ as it were.

I wish people would be clear about “saves” versus “progression”, since “saves” are local to your system while “progression” is on IOI’s servers.

I don’t recall IOI making any statement that indicated they simply didn’t want to trouble themselves. Link?

From a technical standpoint, sure. Which is why I still think it’s contractual reasons that prevented them from doing it.

But at this point they’re unlikely to go to the work to write profile merging code anyway, since Hitman is basically in maintenance mode.

I think it’s quite obvious that we are talking about progression. Saves during missions are not important at all, I don’t have even a one since the game release (Of course, I have autosaves, but I’ve never saved the mission manually).

Of course they didn’t say it out loud.
They simply did nothing when they could do something, as always.
