Thoughts on the God of War movie?

This article explains why a God of War movie might be a bad idea.

5 Reasons why a God of War movie doesn’t sound too promising

I will say it is not just bad, it is a ridiculous idea. Hollywood recently ruined Last of Us, and its own Snow White movie, and now they want to do the same with God of War. Maybe with woke bs?

Even if intentions are good, a game and a movie are two different mediums. What works as a movie does not work as a game, and vice versa.

Game developers don’t take acclaimed masterpieces like 12 Angry Men, Shawshank Redemption and Shutter Island, and try to make it a game. And when they do, like Avatar game or The Godfather game, it fails.

What I find sad is that earlier we got these kind of movies (the masterpieces I named). Now, they have no new story to give us, and so they are turning to remakes and game adaptations and failing miserably. It is not just a Hollywood problem, but many film industries are suffering this fate.

They did the same with the Hitman movies. Although the first Hitman was ok, if you don’t see it as a Hitman movie, but a normal action thriller movie, the second Hitman movie was just pure disappointment.

The thing is, movies can be made that are like the game, or close enough to satisfy, but they just don’t make them that way. And that’s usually because the ones paying for it don’t think the public will go for the story told in the games without adding a bunch of explosions and gun fights to things that don’t belong, and to explain why that’s happening, the whole story has to change. You know, to interest enough people to make money, not to try translating art from one medium to another. Happens with book adaptations too. But this is actually a time where people just might be more interested in the story than flashy action sequences, since the superhero genre is filling that quota regularly, with a little help from the Monsterverse every few years. Try getting it right, Hollywood, now’s your opportunity!

I’ve yet to watch a single Hollywood movie that did justice to a video game. If you know any, would like to know.

Well, depends on how you look at it. The ones who have the least amount of story seem to have more success than more detailed ones. Detective Pikachu, Sonic, and the (recent) Mario movie have been more like what they’re based on than anything else. As for the rest, as I said, they can be made more like the games they’re based on, they just not. There’s no good reason for it, it can be done, it just hasn’t been done.

Mortal Kombat from 1995 and the Tomb Raider Movie with Alicia Vikander are pretty good.

Like most movies and adaptions in general, it comes down to how well is it written, how well is it directed and so on. Is it treated like recent adaptions like The Last of Us or is it treated like videogame adaption used to be? I hope that with films like Sonic (which are generally liked) and a show like The last of us, that there has been a paradigm shift in the approach to videogame adaptions.

Every movie has the potential to be either good or bad.
