TV Show Discussion Thread

Okay, I finished Invincible last night.

WHAT THE CLUCK DUDE (sorry)

Big thoughts, head full

The show itself is very good, with a few issues. I wasn’t that invested in the whole love-triangle subplot, and seeing Mark get into situation after situation of standing up Amber was real annoying. Felt bad for him and equally for Amber. It happened like every episode though and not seeing him win even one of those scheduled moments was frustrating.

The build-up of the Omni-Man plot and mystery was great! You don’t really know why he does what he does, though there are some clues laid out if you’re attentive. I was so close to guessing his motivation, but was off by a bit. (I thought he was jealous of the other supers, wanting to be - the sole protector - of earth. Nah, it’s actually a little god-complex and supremacy he’s after.)
I think this plot really pushed aside a lot of other interesting sub-plots and conflicts that were set-up, but the ending montage basically confirms we’ll see those continue in Season 2.
(Though I wonder if S2 will retain that level of engagement without a cool main plot)
The last 2 episodes are tense-AF and super action packed. Fantastic.

The animation in this show is stunning. There’s some really cool environments, lots of fast-paced and detailed shots, and buckets of well-animated, disgusting gore. I’ve played my fair share of video games, so I’d say I’m probably a bit desensitized to it, but in this show, my stomach went topsy-turvy every time there was some gory moment. I think it’s the detail behind most of it that’s so off-putting. Every time was shocking and let out an audible gasp.

The gore and real-mess of it definitely raised the stakes of the show. Plenty of times throughout where I’d be crossing my fingers that a character wouldn’t die, since the injuries and a few important character deaths are very much real and can happen at any time.

The cast is the most impressive aspect of this show. Amazon’s got a huuuuge budget, wowowow. Plenty of recognizable names for me (though I’m not really familiar with every actor mentioned)

  • Steven Yeun (Walking Dead, Minari, Okja)
  • J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, Spider-Man, Korra)
  • Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy, Killing Eve)
  • Walter Goggins (??? No idea where I’ve heard of him)
  • Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2)
  • Mark Hamill (Star Wars, the best Joker ever)
  • Kevin Michael Richardson (whole bunch of animated shows)
  • Andrew Rannells (The Book of Mormon)
  • Grey DeLisle/Grey Griffin (whole bunch of animated shows)
  • Khary Payton (Walking Dead)
  • Zachary Quinto (Star Trek reboots, the 2nd Hitman movie)
  • Clancy Brown (“Money, Money, Money, aghaghaghagh” -Mr Krabs)
  • Seth Rogen (how can you not know this man)
  • Jonathan Groff (Frozen, 2, Hamilton)
  • Justin Roland (Rick, & Morty, in that order)
  • Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Green Book, Luke Cage, lots of stuff)
  • Jon Hamm (Mad Men, Baby Driver, lotsa stuff)
  • Lauren Cohan, Michael Cudlitz, Lennie James, Chad L Coleman, Sonequa Martin-Green, Ross Marquand (all Walking Dead)

What is wrong with you? It’s Walton and he was on The Shield and Justified and he’s fantastic on both.

Cool!

…He was on what now?

Have you seriously not heard of Justified?

Timothy Olyphant as Raylan Givens, US Marshal in eastern Kentucky? Goggins as Boyd Crowder, the criminal he dug coal with when they were young? Six seasons of fantastic dialogue and fantastic characters? Based on the writings of Elmore Leonard?

He’s also in “The Hateful Eight” and “Django Unchained” if that helps.

Cool. Those are also both Tarantino movies I haven’t seen yet

I might have heard of Justified by name, but none of that is ringing a bell for me.

My wife and I just watched Halston from start to finish. It’s wonderful. Ben Kenobi is fantastic as the hat maker turned fashion icon and then when they get to the part where Halston develops his drug habit, Kenobi is even better. His portrayal of an insufferable maniac is maybe not as good as Ralph Fiennes in In Bruge or Daniel Day Lewis in Phantom Thread, buts it’s in the ball park.

Worth your time.

Yesterday’s Chicago PD episode was the best one they have had in 2 or 3 seasons. Cliff hanger bc it’s a 2 part episode. Season 8 episode 15 if you don’t normally watch but want to give it a try. You can drop in without any background info on the characters and you’ll still be fine.

It’s been a while since Netflix announced a season 2. Finally, it’s coming very soon.
Black Summer Season 2: This Time it’s About Winter. Lol.

Hopefully the writing for the characters has improved and they’re a lot smarter as survivors.

Just watched Friends: Reunion.
It turned out not actually that bad as I have thought when I found out that it will be just some kind of a talk-show.
It’s cooked really good. But yeah, it’s a shame that it won’t be more

Yes, that was moving. Back in the late 90’s… :relieved:
But that’s the real f.r.i.e.n.d.s reunion :

Here’s the dumbest story I’ve seen in quite some time: Idiots who are quite clearly not familiar with The Sandman are upset that they cast a non-binary actor (Mason Alexander Park) as Desire, a character that is famously…(wait for it…) non-binary.

Thankfully, Neil Gaiman gives zero fucks.

They’ve also cast a black woman (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) as Death, who is usually (but not always) portrayed as a pale white lady in the comics and they’ve cast a couple of women in male roles. (Just the idea of Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) as Lucifer makes me smile.)

I adore the comic books so, whatever the cast, I really want this show to be awesome…

Just saw the first episode of Loki. and thought it was quite good. I hope the rest of the show can live up to the promise of this.
The look of the show is fantastic. All of the TVA stuff really feels like 70s scifi from a visual standpoint, and I love it.

Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson have great chemistry, and the scenes of them just talking are really good,

I really enjoyed WandaVision (Falcon & the Winter Soldier less so), but this looks like it could go well beyond that.

The Anne of Green Gables reboot mostly.

That book was formative af in my Canadian childhood, especially when she puts Gilbert Blye in his place for harassing her:
