What Videogame(s) Are You Playing?

If you want, and have the time, I wouldn’t mind your insight on the game once you played it more.
I’ve had the game on my radar for a bit now. But I never could really parse how it plays, and what it actually is.

Is this more a freeflow cozy game, a cyberpunk urban stardew valley?
Or more of an non-violent RPG, with clear cut story acts, ending and structure?
Or something else entirely.

Is the game more about replaying with new characters, choices for a dozen of hour each?
Or can the game be in the absolute fully explored with one long time profile?

Ta.

I intend to play it an hour or two each evening so I can give it a proper review.

It certainly is a non-violent game. You do not actually cook yourself, but when I was our buying ingredients my head started spinning how many of those exist. It must be hundreds!
You can unlock receipts but can also modify them. In the meantime guests wander into your restaurant and affect your rating and level.

I am only at the starting area so far where your first restaurant is, but there are about 5 competing businesses you can chat with, maybe the same amount of merchants and dozens of NPCs you can talk to who either want a job or have side quests that seemingly are unrelated to your business. At night there is a curfew going on, where you can sneak around, talk to more shady NPCs and you can even steal furniture from competitors. I don’t know what happens when you are spotted at this but probably just some economic punishment.

You can also start romances with a few NPCs but I did not really look into that yet.

So I cannot tell yet if there are RPG elements (besides being an ass to your employees or pay them extra with shorter shifts) and if there are story arcs. I currently expect it to be rather tame where you just keep on improving your businesses and decorate them and your apartments. I only know it has no post-game.

However there seems to be a sub-plot about a murderer on the run at night.

I did start over quite early because I disliked my first decisions and it seems stuff is not randomized but intentionally arranged. A full playthrough might end up actually quite long if you enjoy exploring and decorating so you possibly do not need much of a replay value. If you want to do things in another style you could just do that in the same playthrough with the next additional restaurant.

Thanks!
It seems interesting, if not fully what I wished.
I think I will put a pin on it.
I do like non-violent games.

It looks like the game has one central system, the restaurant management, from which everything is born from and going back to. And it looks demanding.

It’s not like Stardew Valley, where you can actually ignore the farm, or the mine, or the fishing, or the social, and it’s still works. Or decide to make one of them central to your play instead of an aside, and it’s fun.
Which would have been my preference.

Again, thanks.

I have been told you can get plenty income from fishing too. So you could possible not doing this whole restaurant stuff and instead wander around, interact with NPCs that have nothing to do with restaurants and decorate apartments.
But I don’t want to confirm this can work before I actually got to the area where you fish, maybe there are other requirements to do all this and to maybe reach all areas. I keep that in mind when playing. But surely you would miss the central piece of the game, who knows if you could even end it.

Me and @TheChicken started playing Dead Island 2. It’s subtle social and political commentary truly makes it the Disco Elysium of zombie games.

Just picked up “Denshattack!”, a Tony Hawk-style trick-based racing game, but instead of riding a skateboard you are driving a train. Early doors it feels like an “easy to pick up, hard to master” jobby, and the art style is great, with massive Hi-Fi Rush vibes. Looks like it’s available on all platforms for anyone interested.

ACE COMBAT 8: Wings of Theve

(yes the presence of series mascot Nugget is a ploy to attract @TheChicken )

What a game.
I was smiling half the time.
(Bopping my head an other half, and concentrating a third half. There were overlapping moments)

GAMEPLAY

I like the new flying physics.
It’s heavier compared to AC7, and all of the previous ones.
It make the gameplay feel intentional, and not just reactive.

It felt like it transformed the game from AC7 “5-10 seconds long decision and projection, agile, quick reaction, most of your gameplay will be of seizing opportunities, the opposition has the tempo”,
to a better-to-me “you can project yourself for 30 seconds, tempo is shared, your gameplay will be to merge and catch flows”.

A lot of “best of”/callbacks.
While still keeping its own identity and flair.

  • Mission 14 felt like a mix of AC5 Final Option and Solitaire, trainer craft use included,
  • Mission 22 felt like a AC5 Arkbird pursuit / ACX Gleipnir callback.
  • Mission 21 felt like AC4 Shattered Sky mission (location, soundtrack, and script). It is my personal favorite. Yay for Forward Supply.
  • Etc…

And then there are the mechanic callbacks, some for entire missions (ex: evading radar, improved with the modern cloud system), some for beats (ex: Dog-Fight Mode, the prodigal).

The devs wanted to make AC8 a definitive Ace Combat, and they did.

I truly appreciate the return of “this mission is only 5-10 minutes long, one phase, and a bit of a gimmick, but you are going to love it on replay of a full campaign”.
While keeping the lessons learned from the previous games of not making them too restricted and scripted.
(AC4 Deep Strike is my platonic ideal, and still my favorite)

A lot of “protecting the ground assets” missions though.
I wouldn’t have minded swapping one of them for a no-gimmick-just-have-at-it annihilation mission.
Not that the game makes it too pressing.

I do miss the old game missions of “you have only 3-5 actual targets if you want to be efficient, but ten times more around if you want to have fun, yet beware on harder difficulty those non-TGT will damage you”.

I guess they only made sense when payout was more of a pressure. AC8 is a single permanent profile, not the PS2 trilogy multiple-and-can-be-deleted save system, and even less AC2 starting from scratch every time.

The one issue I have is how underutilized the forward supply mechanic is.
I do not understand why it was not integrated to the missions where the aircraft carrier Endurance is present on the map if you have a carrier-based craft.
Especially during mission 25, Rocky Island 2.
(unless it’s hidden and I missed it)

I appreciate the EW crafts. (Growler with ESM and MSL parts is extremely fun to play)
Not enough SAAMs though. (you will not make me use a Firkin)

To end my first play ramble:
As a “AC2 is one of the best AC to replay actually” player, I was so happy to see the Rocky Island and the turntable.

The one thing I would add to the game:
A way to replay the campaign from 0 MRP and a wiped aircraft tree.
As an instanced option.

The game reproduces this exact circumstance, Rafales protecting a space rocket launch.

STORY (NO SPOILERS)

No notes.
Mostly because it is good, and there are better people than me to talk about it.
I like it.

I still prefer ACZero structure, approach, atmosphere, references though…

I love that Ace Combat somehow founds itself being the best franchise to explore the idea of “what if the concept of Nation-States as the primacy foundation of modern politics did not hold?”. From ever evolving and changing supranational entities, to stateless community, to corporation…

Music: they did it again.

On the last mission. (spoilers)

First: it felt like a love letter call back to Ace Combat 2 baseline ending.
A submarine emerging after the war end, and you having to intercept missiles.

But due to canon obligation to AC3, contrary to AC2 you cannot extend from it to a further redoubt.
It makes sense too, Strangereal is now a world with corporations above your reach, with no singular place to take down.

I actually like it. It’s a good story beat. It’s a “goddammit why can’t you leave peace alone” mission.
Besides, as far as “Ace Combat climaxes with a mega-fortress with tunnel/canyon/precise run, a furball, and/or a bossfight”, that’s what missions 27, 28, and 29 are respectively.

And as I said, it’s AC2 last missile interception ending, I couldn’t stop smiling when I saw it. With a bonus for it being at AC04 first mission location of Newfield Island.

It also goes well with the sense that history isn’t nations to write anymore. It’s a hollow victory, and it’s clear that corporations will not even sense it and move on. As D.D. they are organized to not feel impact from singular blows.

Special mention to Tasha who gives the entire thesis of Ace Combat:
“If you just love to fly, why pick fights? It makes no sense.”

In all seriousness: I think this is a game everyone should play once, if they appreciate video games as an art form.

It’s a niche franchise, and there are no other games like it. So it’s hard to make a spiel about “if you like X you will like Ace Combat”. It needs to be told of ex-nihilo.

It’s made by a team that has made those games for decades, and for the first time since the aughts has had a non-hellish development cycle and the full confidence of their company.
It is a testament to their experience and expertise. From core gameplay loop. to mission design, to sound design, to the soundtrack. And they made it the definitive Ace Combat experience.

It is a beautiful piece of craft.
It’s sincere.

But, I can’t deny that it cost 80 euros on console, 70 on pc. And it’s like 25 hours long if you play it only once as a beginner, and don’t go into the multiplayer. (but there is a nugget mascot in the multiplayer diegetic lobby…)

So yourself a favour, put it on you wishlist and wait for it to go on sale in a year or so.
It’s Banco it will be at 15 euros regularly in two years.

(in the meantime, download an emulator and play Ace Combat Zero at least once, it’s 5-6 hours long, same for 04 and 5)

Just got Star Wars Galactic Racer physical on the cheap, thanks to a great trade-in deal at EBGames  paid just under 40$ for a new 80$ game yippee

Only just a few races into it, I’m enjoying it. Feels like a mix of Burnout, Wipeout and a dash of Motorstorm.

There’s one of the racers you can interact with between events who I really quickly clocked as Derek Hagen – the guy who I think commentates on the Miami race in Hitman 2? “Remember folks, the key to endurance racing is…”

He’s practically using his “normal voice” here I guess (or whatever this normal voice-dialect is if he’s not typically american) plus with the racing theme in the dialogue while playing the game must have easily tipped me off.

New Pokemon Snap (Used) is hilarious.

I know it is because the last one their made was “New” which is Gamefreaks way of saying “We remembered a spinoff, are you happy? Now quit asking for a new Pokemon Ranger game already.”

According to IMDb, Soren Zaks is indeed voiced by Derek Hagen! So that’s why I found him so familiar…

Just started Tropico 6 last night, to get a feel for it as 7 will be coming early next year, and Steam is having a massive sale on the game - the base game and one DLC reduced from about $45 to just $13. Just played a couple tutorial missions, but I think I like it. The only games like it I’ve played before have been Spore and Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis, so I’m familiar with the concept, but I like the specific idea of living vicariously as a dictator over your own country that this one provides. El Presidente and Penultimo are hilarious. I think I’ll get the rest of the DLC while the sale is still going.
