What Videogame(s) Are You Playing?

Yeah, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to find a co-op partner for RE5 or RE6. Not sure I ever really want to try those games to begin with, unless I wind up really becoming an RE fan down the line. Just seems weird to me for a horror series like RE to add something like co-op, and really, it does feel borderline mandatory for those 2 games from what I hear unless you want a miserable time. I do need to give RE4 a shot though, it sounds like that game still holds up.

streets of rage 4 dlc landed on thursday, so i’ve been between that and red dead online.

dlc is £6 and has three (technically four) new characters; an additional difficulty mode; new tracks; move customisation along with alternative moves for all the sor4 characters; a robust, rogue-like survival mode, and a proper lab/training mode.

again, £6. crazy good value.

I’ve just finished the main game of Immortals Fenyx Rising. Wow! I guess it’s all down to personal taste, but this is among one of the best games I’ve ever played. Beautiful worlds to explore, great story, hilarious dialogue, fantastic fighting and levelling-up/character development mechanics, missions that are well balanced against a reasonable investment of time in perfecting skills (rushing through the game would punish you), and tons of fiendish, but enjoyable puzzles. I am a bit of a completionist, so I’ve spent around 60 hours to do just about everything in the main game. Luckily I’ve now got three DLCs to enjoy.

I did mess around with the demo less than a year ago, but went ahead and bought (at 50% off) The Survivalists. Of course it’s a survival game. You can free captured monkeys then train them to do tasks. You can build a base, but it will get raided once or twice a cycle. A cycle is when resources replenish. There are also crafting recipes. If you need a certain material for a project - then you’ll need so many base materials to make whatever, to make whatever again. I could almost draw up a crafting chart/tree to help keep better track of things needed. And about the monkeys, once you have them trained - as long as they have a functioning tool/item they will do whatever it is you task them with… Usually? I haven’t played the game that long and I’m still figuring things out.

I do have Terraria. I haven’t played it in a quite a while, but I did have 1700+ hours in that game. This game could probably get that many hours of play too. :confounded: I’ve already put around 6 or 7 hours just from the 1st play session.

And what attracted me to this game in the first place? I missed playing a Zynga/FB game called ‘Adventure World’ and later titled ‘Indiana Jones Adventure World’. But it was sadly cancelled after so long. Probably due to licensing/contract time limit.

The thing with Adventure World was that it was turn based. So you could cut your way through a level, collect coins, fight enemies, or whatever. Then you were done for the day or so many hours for your energy to replenish. This is not the case in The Survivalists. Nope. You’ll probably waste your whole freaking day playing.

Played RE1 Remake, about 2 hours in, and I think I’ve decided to give up on it. You know, I think this is a great game, it is gorgeous, the mansion design is excellent, the sound design is very top notch. But… I dunno, I just don’t find it fun really. I understand how the fixed camera angles can really make the mansion seem scarier, but it does make running around tedious. I know that is very old school but still. Shooting zombies is quite easy but also annoying, I hate the dogs because if I am aiming at them off camera I’m not sure if the autoaim is working on them due to their low height. It doesn’t help I’ve reached a point where I’ve explored a decent amount of the mansion, I have like 6 different key items with no idea where to put any of them, and like 2 dozen different locked doors. I’m sure I could figure it out in due time, but I just don’t have the drive.

A game I respect, but don’t really want to play. Don’t think I’m going to bother with RE0 either since from what I understand that is kindof the sister game to this. Think I’ll move onto Revelations 1 or RE7 next, depending on how I feel, although I think my very next game will be starting Forza Horizon 4. I want to see how much of Edinburgh feels realistic to my own knowledge of it.

RE1 is great, but i also have to be in the right mood for it. Maybe you should play Revelations first and then come back and give it another shot.

Its one of those games i think everyone should play through at least once, just like everybody should see the Star Wars OT :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

RE0 is a bit weird, and i think i only like it because you play as Rebecca Chambers and she is my RE Waifu

Doom Eternal is one of the best games I have ever played.

I’m not the best at explaining why it’s so fun (there are a lot of people who have already explained much better than I could) but in short the game forces you to play in a way that is fun and exciting. Managing ammo, prioritising enemies that will destroy you if you are not careful, avoiding their attacks and learning their behaviour all during an exciting and intense encounter is very engaging and satisfying to solve.

The game in my opinion also does a good job at teaching and preparing the player for these intense encounters, when I first played the game I started on hurt me plenty difficulty but eventually was able to reach nightmare in around 1 to 2 weeks of playing. I’m not going to try Ultranightmare or Extra life mode though, at least not yet.

The game also feels fun to replay, even after finishing levels. The game is linear yet it’s always fun to go back to previous levels and beat their unique encounters. Each one is unique and has their own challenges and obstacles to beat. If you think you want a more challenging experience though, remixed versions of the levels called master levels are there that rearranges the existing enemies and hazards with more challenging ones. Some of them come with their own prizes for beating them under certain conditions (difficulty, Ultranightmare, classic mode, extra life mode). I spent 6 hours playing the super gore nest master level classic mode (where you start with only an unmodded shotgun and collect weapons and mods while playing, similar to classic Doom) on nightmare difficulty, and I haven’t even tried it on Ultranightmare! (I am a bit disappointed that finishing it does not give the prize for the nightmare difficulty though, since clasic mode is a harder nightmare difficulty). The master levels are being developed right now though, so far we only have cultist base (pre-order;Rip and tear pack), Super gore nest, Arc complex and Taras Nabad).

One thing that people are divided on about this game though is the marauder. He is a demon that has a shotgun when you get too close, a projectile when you are far away, a shield to block your attacks, and a hellhound (I think that’s what they’re called) that chases and pressures you when his shield is attacked neither by the player or an enemy projectile). The “only” way to deal damage to him is by attacking him when his eyes flash green, he will then be paralysed for a few seconds to allow a few hits on him. Some people really hated this, claiming that he goes against what the game has taught you and isn’t fun to fight. The marauder himself is actually not that hard to fight, he can only block attacks that hit him from where he is facing, so you can:

 • Use sticky bombs near him (not directly) to chip off his health.
 • Use the remote detonation rockets to hit him from behind.
 • Use weapon combos on him.
 • Whatever this is.
 • Smashing him against a wall.
 • Smashing him onto a wall.

And many more (some of these might be patched out by this point, but there’s still a lot that can be done against him). If you are scared of the game because of what others say about this one enemy, then hopefully this shows that he is not as tough as what everyone says. You don’t even need to be a high level player to use all this stuff, there’s always the reliable super shotgun-ballista combo.

I haven’t tried enough of the multiplayer yet, since my connection sucks. It takes a very long time to find a match and either I get destroyed by most player or I’m not helping at all while playing as demons.

If you’re worried about not getting the full experience playing on console, don’t worry. While console players are limitee by some things (quick switching, ballista boosts, really great mods, etc) they won’t get a worse product than the pc version. Weapon switching is still possible, not as fast as pc but still possible, the fast gameplay surprisingly fits well despite the limits of a controller (you can change the bindings to what you like, but it’s not as extensive as pc binding options), most of the crazy movement stuff speedrunners use still works, multiplayer, as far as I can tell, has as an active console community.

The DLC is also worth it if you enjoyed the main game, The Ancient Goda (TAG) part 1 is the one I recommend, it can sometimes be as hard as master levels but also contains some of the best levels in the game, with my favourite The Blood Swamps among them. TAG 2 was a more controversial addition because it’s not as “difficult” as the rest of the game (
If you got 2 hours to spend, then this video might be interesting to you: https://youtu.be/fodCpxnQGFw
) so I wouldn’t recommend it as much as TAG 1, but it still is a fun time for those who want more content (TAG 2 is even getting the first DLC master level, if we’re not counting the pre-order bonus).

This game is not for everyone. It’s challenging, intense and has a high learning curve, but you do not have to reach that level to enjoy the game. I really do recommend anyone who is interested to try playing it. If you don’t enjoy the game though, it also comes with The Ultimate DOOM and DOOM 2, playable by collecting all the cheat codes in the eternal campaign(DOOM 1) and entering FLYNNTAGGART as the code (DOOM 2) both on the old pc in the Fortress of Doom, so you still get some bonus content in the form of these games.

I didn’t really talk much about the story because that isn’t the thing I play Doom for, it’s the fun and exciting gameplay.

I don’t know anything about music but I liked the music in-game. That’s all I have to say about the music part.

I like the first two Doom Games and all the other good Boomer Shooters, but I feel like the Doom Guy… Oh sorry, Doom Slayer lacks personality and instead of giving him one they cranked up his bad assery level to cringe.
The shitty heavy metal doesn’t help much with that too.

I feel the same way towards FF7 Remake. A game that I respect but I just don’t find really fun for some reason. RPGs( I think that’s what this is? It’s not turn-base) are not something I enjoy playing that much but I usually respect them. I want to go back to it and at least finish it, but I’m just reaching that part where Cloud fell into the abandoned church and the game already feels like a chore to play. Hopefully I find something to like if I revisit it.

does he really need one?

saying that, i think i read or watched something about the first nu-doom that suggested he had lots of personality, just in how he interacts with the environment, npcs and other stuff. i was too busy gibbing demons to notice.

edit: found it. if you can put up with jim, he makes a fair point.

He mostly just destroy things and gets angry, but if I remember correctly he does show a bit of personality.

 • In 2016’s opening, when Hayden says that what they are doing is for the good of humanity, he stares at the dead body in the lift, cracks his knuckles, and breaks that communication device (not sure what it’s called).
 • When Hayden tells him to carefully remove the hell energy accumulator (I forgot what that is), at first he inspects the thing before kicking it and breaking it.
 • Before he deletes VEGA he backed him up despite not needing to and destroying most things he encounters.
 • In Eternal, he has pictures and memorabilia of his pet rabbit, Daisy, who was seen dead in the end of Inferno in the original doom.
 • He has a now deleted picture of his family in the fortress of doom
 • He has comics, a toy collection, books, some old school Id games, guitars, a gaming pc and some other stuff I thought these may just be Easter eggs and nothing more).

Just enough to give him a bit of character while mostly having him be a blank slate. Though about him being a badass to the point of cringe is subjective, some people like to embrace that cheesy side while others try to avoid it.

Well, I’ve played Revelations, done the first 3 episodes, and yeah, this is far more up my alley. It does feel like a beginner’s RE really, there is no item management, no crafting herbs, the layout of the ship is pretty simple really. I think the only real management aspect is your limited ammo and which upgrades you use on which guns.

So yeah, I’m enjoying it. To be honest, I’m not sure playing this is going to make me like the RE1 Remake though. Revelations just seems so much closer to RE2 and 3 Remakes with the third person camera and control scheme. I just think RE1R fixed camera angle setup is something I find too obtuse for me to get past.

Well, I wound up beating Revelations. I’ll give the episodic structure one thing, it does make you want to keep playing. “Ah, just one more mission, oh that was short, I guess I can do another mission” etc. I had fun. Not my favourite RE, doesn’t really come too close to RE2R or RE3R but then again, this thing was made for the 3DS, and I think does lose something when ported to consoles. I mean, the episodic structure was probably made for those who played on bus rides and for short gaming bursts, kinda loses something when on console where you can play for hours at a time.

Still though, fun game, definetly beginner friendly, I can see why you guys recommended it to me. I like the setting on the ship, it is cool and creepy. Not too sure bout the plot, I know at this point RE has built up a big chunk of lore and I guess at this point the Umbrella Corporation is no more, with this plot all about the machinations of the FBC and the BSAA and a fictional European city that became another Racoon City. Obviously I know who Jill and Chris are but I am guessing I’m missing some backstory to this plot. Not to mention, it is set in 2005, so I guess this would maybe be a prequel to RE5 and/or RE6? Still, Jill is cool, and Chris… exists. Jill’s partner Parker is a cool dude though, I like him.

I think my issue is that the episodic structure can be distracting at point. Jill has the main playthrough with the sortof typical RE structure of having a big level to discover which opens up the more keys and plot items you get while having to deal with item management. Meanwhile, the other characters usually get linear levels and seem to have their inventory designed for that specific level (I assume). In a sense, it does feel like Jill’s scenario keeps constantly getting interupted by there missions, even if they all tie into the original plot. I kinda wish their was a way to just play through Jill’s scenario all the way through without interuptions, basically tape all her missions together. I mean I guess you can through the mission select (I presume, I never bothered to check), but still.

I guess to go into spoilers: some missions really annoy me. You have that flashback to the European city falling so you play through a level set in an office building where you fights tons of hunters. But then, the third last level of the game, you fight through the same level backwards, again fighting nothing but hunters. That felt like padding. You have to visit the downed plane twice, and the second time barely makes sense because it means the guys from the airport must of had to go to the other side of the mountain and then climb it to reach the point where Chris found it. And really, I don’t understand why the second last level is an entire level dedicated to an underwater section. Or even the plotting kinda feels wonky at times. The ship gets hit by a tidal wave, water is flooding in, you have to escape the water, only to reach the casino and meet Chris, who tells Jill they have to go back into the water to find the secret lab to find the virus. I guess the ship isn’t sinking that quickly afterall, it all feels a bit leisurely really.

Still, good time, had fun, I can see the appeal on the RE lore. Guess I’ll move onto Revelations 2 next probably, although I hear that game actually was released episodically and wasn’t quite as good as Revelations 1?

I’ve started RE7. I’ll get around to Revelations 2 later. Decided last night, screw it, lets it give it a shot. I must admit, it isn’t as bad as I thought it would be scare wise, but that probably boils down to the fact that I spoiled myself on the game ages back, probably thinking I’d never be brave enough to play it. So there are alot of story beats I already know, like the opening chapter basically turning every corner in the house waiting to be told that I’ve been welcomed into the family.

Couple hours in. I’m enjoying it, it’s definetly RE, just in FPS and with the Texas Chainsaw vibe. I think having played other RE titles definetly helps. (Actually remembering now that one of the reasons I hated RE5 was back then, as my first RE game, I had no idea how the item inventory worked, and how herb mixing worked. Think the RE2 Remake does a great job teaching how that system works.) So I guess Jack Baker is basically this game’s Mr X, trying to avoid him at times and engage him when neccesary. Saying that though, I just finished the chainsaw boss fight, I thought that was awful. So clunky, had to whip a guide out when I died like 5 times because I wasn’t grabbing the chainsaw to fight him, rather just trying to use my guns to take him down and it seems that is completely the wrong way to do so. Real weak point.

Do you ever hear a voice from a character, and just cannot remember where you’ve heard it before?

This is the second WOA target voice that I’ve had this experience with, the first was the realisation that Jordan Cross is played by the same person who did Lucio from Overwatch.

I was playing some Destiny 2 earlier today, and only just realised that the massive AI head was the voice of Silvio Caruso

I beat RE7. Enjoyed it, good game. Doesn’t quite click the same way as RE2 Remake, which I know I keep going on about, but that really is the gold standard for me at this point. Still, I really like this, although at times it does feel very linear. I mean I guess all the RE games are, but the Baker Plantation does feel a tiny bit oversimplistic, I certainly never got lost. Although at the same time, I also never found all the items, only got 13 of the 18 antique coins, I know you can find a gun repair kit that can repair either the broken pistol or broken shotgun you get. I probably should used those magic pills that let you see all the item drops more.

So yeah, good time. I don’t own the DLC and don’t really feel the need to get any of it, especially since I hear it is all pretty short stuff, even if some of it ties up loose ends. I can see how Re7 is perhaps more fun when you replay it, know where to find stuff, and how quickly you can do it all. I enjoy most of it, boss fights are fine barring the chainsaw fight. I guess I get annoyed at the Molded, I don’t think they are that interesting, they feel a bit limited in terms of being your standard enemies. Times where I just felt annoyed having to fight them more than anything.

I’m whinging alot but RE7 is a good, sometimes great game. I imagine one I would probably enjoy more the second time through, but I also want to move on, especially with my holiday time nearly over. (God I don’t want to go back to work, Christ.) I’ll get around to Revelations 2 at some point. And I definetly want to buy RE8 in the future, will wishlist it on Steam and see how cheap it gets in the future, maybe in Steam’s Winter sale. Still kinda think I might wind up liking that game more actually, but we’ll see.
