It is an actual scientific theory in the field of quantum physics dating back to the Fifties. It posits that the quantum underpinnings of the universe are not constants but undergo fluctuations in spacetime.

I’ve been seeing a lot of meme images and youtube thumbnails about the new anime series (even though I haven’t engaged with any of that content), and a lot of them involve *A picture of the Robot lady from the show, *A crying person/A crying manly man.
So… she probably dies by the end?
I could be wrong but it still kinda sucks I might go into the show with expectations like that, I feel it might ruin some of my enjoyment of it if I know what’s coming.

Speaking of fascinating sentences, here’s one that didn’t exist until George Carlin said it on stage in the early nineties:
“As soon as I put this hot poker in my ass, I’m going to chop my dick off!”
As he pointed out, the reason it didn’t exist before was because nobody had ever said it before; at that moment, he became the first person in the history of our species to put those exact words together in that particular order. And that concept fascinates me. I continue to try to come up with a unique, original sentence both funny and profound… alas, to this day, I continue to fail.

Seeing Akira for the first time tonight. 4K restoration.
My local theater is PACKED. Never seen them this busy since before covid. Barely any open seats with social distancing.
They’re gonna make really good business tonight for this limited weekend run.

Is it of the original (well, dubbed, I assume)?
Or the remaster they did in 2001 where they reworked a few parts of the script?
If you don’t know - then don’t worry about answering. Maybe a little googling is in order.
This is probably useless info, but… I watched/rented it on VHS in the late 90’s. One scene that sticks out in my mind is when Tetsuo had made the giant sphere thing holding Akira’s body come up out of the ground. There were these (I think) 2 gigantic tubes that came off the thing and these white clouds of steam were billowing out. They seemed to move in slow motion - probably because they were so big.
Anyway, I believe this scene is missing from the 2001 remaster (which I bought and still have).
Edit: My memory might be rusty on the details of that scene… But I’m pretty sure that’s what was going on.

I didn’t know there were different versions.
We watched it as japanese audio with english subtitles, so I think it should be the uncut original. The scene where the huge sphere gets lifted out of the ground was definitely there.

akira is top-to-bottom amazing. the comic is somehow even better.
@TheChicken you should give the og ghost in the shell anime a shot too; it’s a little dry in places but more than deserves the adoration it gets.

By God, Quora is such an unbearable site to browse that I am thankful its userbase hasn’t spread itself out to other social media sites. I don’t when or why I created an account there, but I finally had the willpower to delete it. How their users ask the most cocksure questions and bait users to write scathing replies is a question I will never discover.
“I want to resign at a job I work at. But instead of submitting a resignation letter I stalked my boss and murdered his wife and now I’ve been ordered a restraining order against them. Where did I go wrong?”

The internet was a mistake.
Sorry, not necessarily new (I have a bit of a habit of that) but I’m just so sick of people being so far up their asses they don’t even see anyone or anything around them but themselves. And don’t even get me started about “modern, smart audiences”. I’m not going to say that people should just enjoy things but it is clear at this point that some people just don’t like the fields they talk about and should probably find something else to do (for EVERYONE’S sakes). They complain about absolutely EVERYTHING, often in direct opposition to others commenting on the same thing. Or worse, directly contradicting THEMSELVES. If the story is too hard to follow or the characters too much to keep track of, it’s the show or movie’s fault. But, god forbid, the things get explained! Then, it’s too simple or straightforward or “something I could have figured out for myself, thanks, 0/10”.

Anyway, I’m fairly confident I’ve complained about this shit before (possibly more than once) so feel free to ignore my ramblings. There’s a lot more I could go into (and I have). I just needed to vent (not to mention stop looking at comments or reviews). I think what gets me is that people are so full of themselves these days that anything they don’t agree with can’t possibly be real. “It’s JUST GOT to be a bot or paid for or both! Other REAL humans can’t POSSIBLY fail to see my glory and agree with it COMPLETELY!” It’s like, fine, have your… whatever take but let other people have theirs.
Long story short, I need to take my own advice one day and enjoy what I enjoy and not let others ruin it for me. What a cathartic post! Apologies again, thanks for coming to my TED talk.
PS: let me know if this should be in another thread. I wasn’t sure and the FEELING, while not itself new, JUST NOW hit me again so this experience was new (and recent) from a certain point of view.

I, for one, hear you. I am sick to death of “the internet” declaring plot holes that aren’t, continuity errors that don’t matter, opinions as fact, and the stupid polarization that exists everywhere. “With us or against us” is no way to go through life.
