What's New....?

Hey, if it weren’t for a scalper, Ted Stryker would never have gotten back together with Elaine!

The Saks is closing downtown Chicago. I knew they were in trouble but wow, it was a seven story flagship and the best dept store we had. I went in to check out the clearance sale. They put all the stuff they had left for sale up on floor 6 and it was so strange riding the escalators up seeing all the empty floors. I scored some Saint Laurent jeans at 80% off. Probably the only time in my life I’ll be able to afford them, but then I got caught in what felt like a tropical thunderstorm on my way home. I have never experienced rain like that in my home town.

The rain sucked but really it just added to the sadness of seeing that once mighty store so empty.

Always feels sad to see a place once with a warm atmosphere empty. Happened to my favorite take-away hotdog place recently.

Lots of western icons I’ve seen so far in merch at various stores in Japan.

You got your Disney, Marvel, even Peanuts, and also Thomas the Tank Engine!
Currently on a train to tour around Mt Fuji today, and we just passed by some Thomas locomotives, with branding “Thomas Land” on the back.
TtTE theme park?? :locomotive:

Now the reference to Thomas in the movie Bullet Train makes way more sense. And I guess it even makes a reference in the japanese book its based on!
(There’s a pair of two assassins, and one of them is obsessed with labeling everyone as a Thomas the Tank Engine character. I thought that was just a joke added for western audiences.)

PS: all the licensed merch is usually in English. I was hoping to grab a japanese-themed marvel shirt or something on this trip! Gimme some cultural mixing here!

How are you finding Japan and is it your first time? Personally I feel in love with the country when I visited back in 23.

If you are going to Tokyo, try out Akihabara. I didn’t make it there myself, but It might be a good spot to look. @Rimland our local Japan resident might have some ideas, where it’s best to look.

I have zero interest in Marvel (and other) stuff myself, but Akiba would definitely be one of the first places I’d scour if I did. Alongside Ikebukuro and Shibuya.

Got a new contract at work after 5 years in negotiations and one failed tentative agreement.

We voted “no” 287 days ago, but today we voted “yes!” 26% pay raise with another 3% coming in August, then yearly raises, a decent signing bonus, and some quality of life improvements. Yacob is a happy dude today.

Today’s morning two of my distant relatives have been finally released today from a more than 4 years of russian captivity.
They’ve been captured back in 2022, March or something, don’t know exactly, defending Mariupol.
Since then nobody knew their fate but everybody hoped they’re alive.
About a year ago somebody who knew them or seen them or were with them was released also and told family that they seen them and they are alive. But everything could have happened since.
And today they’re home. Nothing else known yet, but thank God they’re alive.
They are my grandfather’s brother sons, which of them are five, and all been fighting, but those two were unlucky to have been captured. Now we can be sure that all of them luckily alive
