Basically I’m here to complain. I open hitman today, I have a constantly reappearing pop up that wants me to make an account. The pop up will not go away unless I play on offline mode which I don’t want to do for obvious reasons
Im massively unimpressed. I paid alot of money for this game and I don’t understand why I’m being forced to make an ioi account to play the game I’ve already paid for and have been since August last year
The following is just an interpretation and not actual fact/s stated by the devs:
The unlock system and pretty much everything that is considered “live content” (Twitch rewards, IOI account rewards etc. included) is on the IOI servers. Partly because it would bloat up the game if it was actually in it, which made sense back in 2016 when 1TB HDDs/SSDs cost a fortune, partly because the save files and inventories of 1 can’t/couldn’t sync up with 2, and the ones of 1 and 2 can’t/couldn’t sync up with 3 via Steam. It’s a leftover IOI can’t seem to get rid of which is probably also a reason for the account rewards.
It also “motivates” players to come back every now and then, either because of an Elusive Target or because a new challenge and unlock got added. The game stays relevant for perfectionists, collectors, and people who suffer under FOMO far longer.
At least you’re left alone after making the account and don’t have to log in every single time, like you have to with Ubisoft Connect or the Rockstar Game Launcher. You do it once, link everything, and then you’re done and can play immediately, as much as you want.
After all, it takes maybe two minutes. Three minutes if you type with a single finger.
Developers introduced crossplatform progression in February which works only via IOI Account.
If it keeps constanly appearing, I guess they made IOI Account a mandatory thing.
You won’t be able to share a progress on different platforms without it.
And personally I don’t see any problem.
If you don’t want to share your private e-mail address, you always can register another one, specifically for some account like IOI’s.
Creating IOI Account takes a few minutes as stated above, but it gives you opportunities which are inaccessible without it
I think signing up for an IOI account shouldn’t be made mandatory.
If some player doesn’t want cross progression, extra unlocks, it’s their freedom.
Even if somebody doesn’t want those things, it won’t hurt anybody to register an account and just forget about it.
Same it cost you nothing. Just a minute or two before starting to play.
There are mandatory custcenes in some games that take way more time and cause much more annoyance than this little tiny action of creating an IOI Account
I think gaming is supposed to be simple. One purchases the game and go straight into play.
But okay signing up for an IOI account is very quick, so it’s not really a nuisance and I’m not against it.
I mean, it’s literally kilobytes of activation code to enable them in-game. And 1TB hard drives in 2016 were not terribly expensive at all. In fact, I’d wager they’ve stayed the same price since then. New ones cost £40+, second-hand ones 1/4 to 1/2 of that.
SSD’s are still quite expensive, partly due to semiconductor shortages, but partly because their speed is a selling point. A 512GB SATA SSD is quite expensive (£50 - £80), and the second-hand market isn’t much better.
Except for the suspiciously small parts that could. You were able to do an old save bonus between 2016/2, where the IOI account system could read save data and reward the player with specific items. Also, the systems are functionally identical. I suspect the reason they didn’t do cross-game saves until H3 is because they couldn’t be arsed to do it. It was not a standard featureset of games at that time. Cross-progression was but a glimmer in Epic’s eye.
