CHONGQING, China (Mission #4) - Location Discussion

This Chongqing people argument gets ridiculous tbh, as if adding a couple dozens of fake NPCs on the streets would make a tremendous difference, and the level will become from a terrible map to the absolute best.

… you’re weird. And that’s coming from me.

It’s not about whether it would impact how you play the level; I expect a Chinese city to feel like a Chinese city. There are more than a billion people in that country, and I would expect it to feel more like Mumbai, Miami, and Marrakesh than Colorado, Whittleton Creek or Haven.

I expected for intresting city that you travel and seeing market and food stands and stores

And not the bulls*** that we got
But the colors was great.

The level is set sometime past midnight, iirc, so it does sort of make sense that there’s pretty much nobody out.

The problem with Chongqing is that the rain effect uses up lots of available memory which could be used for populating outside areas with NPCs.

Instead, Chongqing has the bulk of its NPCs in its major buildings, where there is no rain effect.

It’s been a year and a half since the launch of Hitman 3, and even now that I’m running Chongqing I’m disappointed. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it. It just looks like a wasted and unnecessary map that was made to get excited about the colors and lights and not the content of the map

I never got why so many fans wanted a rain level. In most of the Chicago missions in Absolution, it is heavily raining. It is sad that because of the rain, we got less content for Chongqing :disappointed:

Makes me think they should have put that rain in a map that made more sense, like, say… Dartmoor?

Hmm, are we sure that this ā€œless contentā€ is a direct result of the rain effect (in terms of memory)? I mean if the level was always meant to be set at 3am, then there was always going to be a small number of NPCs outside. It makes sense, rain or not.

I’ve said it several times before, but I think the level’s issue is in the overall dominant presence of the ICA element and the related lack of accessible non-ICA interiors (which could be populated by civies). That’s what makes it feel like a bad city level, not the empty streets per se. Those are normal for even a big city at that time of night, especially since the area in question is not a busy downtown area.

If we want a more populated Chongqing mission, then a daytime/evening (and rain-less) bonus mission would be the sensible way to go. And even then, the crowded streets would feel kinda weird with the absence of accessible/open shops and restaurants/bars.

It makes sense in Chongqing. The rain wouldn’t have the desired visual effect (which is arguably what they were going for) in Dartmoor.

(Also, if we happen to keep discussing Chongqing, let’s do it in the Chongqing thread :slightly_smiling_face:)

I meant it makes sense in Dartmoor because of England having a history of being overcast and having fewer NPCs and such, whereas more could have been put into Chongqing to make it actually feel like a Chinese mega city, assuming the rain was a factor in how much could go in.

Rain on Ambrose would make sense as a tropical location.

The main appeal of a rainy Chongqing is the neon / light reflections. Which I must say works.
The city side of Chongqing is genuinely beautiful to walk. It’s just severely underused.

I still hope for a foggy version of the map. Maybe keyed to look like a pollution smog. Neons will still work in it, but with a different appeal.
(And the special assignment in Santa Fortuna is already using a fog)

The fans complains about Chongqing since hitman 3 came out, and ioi made a Bonus mission, but in Dartmoor😄

Well I like Chongqing just the way it is, frankly. I hope it never changes!

For me Chongqing was 5/10
after Chongqing noodle mod 7.5/10
but still i would like to see train station, food stands and more place outside and more npc!!!

Agree on all accounts. A foggy/smoggy version would be neat - like you say, the neons would work there as well, but differently. Damn, all this Chongqing talk makes me wanna replay Kane and Lynch 2… The vibes are there:

I feel like one more entrance into the facility, a couple more ways up and down the Block, and the level design itself would click a lot better. I feel like its compact nature is due to it being made to compliment the shorter loops of the targets which doesnt gel with the level’s larger vertical size

Personally, I think there are enough access points to the ICA facility and the block. Definetly more than the Embassy and the school from Marrakesh.
People complaining most for the city area, that is effectly short and not very interesting. Personally, I’m fine with the actual Chongquing we get, even if it’s far from perfect, but I still prefer it to Ambrose (still a decent map, but it’s not really get me that much).

I think the city is honestly more interesting because despite its crampedness you dont have to use everything and theres always cool little ways to get around. I think the fact that there is a lot of ways to get to and from but because starting locations for the suit arent that great and you will always have to head into these areas it does make it seem more repetitive. Thats why i love the contracts set on the city but dont like ones involving for example the facility (compare flour power - pre-nerf vs perfect organism and the former is way more fun)

I see your point. I admit that most of the initial charm of Chongquing is effectly lost once you enter in the Block and especially in the ICA facility.
Perhaps, you would enjoy more the awesome @Kevin_Rudd mod, if you’re lucky to play on PC, give it a try. (I wish I could… :sob:)
