Chongqing’s streets are empty because of COVID restrictions…

I don’t know whether that’s a dumb sarcastic joke, or a brilliant explanation for equally brilliant developer’s foresight.

IOI had predicted that there would be a worldwide pandemic of a coronavirus during the period of Hitman3 release.

Out of a respect for realism, IOI made sure that the streets of Chongqing were not too crowded.

Hitman is “reality adjacent”, real enough to be a consistent and follow the expectations for reality but not like reality, per se.

For example, IOI had plans to illustrate enforcement of mandatory lockdowns by police barricading residents inside residential buildings for months on end in a large city within China, but IOI decided against it just before release, because that kind of imaginary scenario was just not a believable for gamers within the Hitman world.

I think maybe IOI wanted to make a Hong Kong location at first. And because of the riot in HK, they changed their plan.
There are some Traditional Chinese signs in the street and ICA facility, and this might be an evidence.
Eg.“光榮飛躍”should be“光荣飞跃
一級 二級 三級”should be“一级 二级 三级
已搜尋文件”should be“已搜寻文件

If I recall correctly, it was meant to be Hong Kong.

Maybe they didn’t do so much about HK map before they changed to Chongqing. I assume they finished the ICA facility part first and then made the change.

Is the traditional Chinese signs an indication of change of choice of location, or that IOI didn’t have experts who knew the correct characters that differentiated HK from China?

That is possible. There were some Traditional Chinese in the Absolution Chinatown. But they especially fixed a small error about the Yuzhong station sign because 榆中 and 渝中 are two different counties.

wait… Chinese government has one of the strictest anti-COVID policy in the world for sure, but it’s not something like a curfew… just a reminder if that’s what it were misunderstood.

well when the scenario of Chongqing was first shown in the trailer everyone thought it was HK because of the neon and colourful lights, classic element of kowloon Walled City. I admit that I was shocked when the location was revealed as Chongqing, and not surprisingly it’s full of stereotype… But it understandable, after all IOI is a medium-sized independent studio so that they might not have enough resources to thoroughly study everything about the history and custom of a strange city.

I dont buy that because China is equally if not more controversial and the level itself PLAYS INTO that controversy - surveillance state, the lack of privacy in the facility, the mistreatment of the poor in the block

They’re both locations in China lol, Hong Kong is just more controversial because of that and its timeframe with the game, Chongqing can get away with the fact that it’s also more futuristic so not accurate to the actual city and therefore can pass the censorship (and also it’s not a city where a very controversial event occurred)

Real life city of Chongqing, looks at Hitman 3, then at @Luiluix:

“We’ll, I am now, bitch!”

Chongqing is such a legit map. I liked it at first, and then grew less fond of it, but now I’ve basically learnt most of the ins and outs of it, i love it a lot.

Hopefully we see a bonus mission though that utilises the outdoor section a little more

The controvesy is nothing for me. I think the real problem is the map, it is so small. It lacks enough content for a city. It’s just neon lights everywhere and the map is so vertical. There are too many stairs climbings.

It was possible to use a muffin, a breaching charge, and a suitcase to explore the lower levels which were quite extensive however the addition of death boxes in an update put an end to that.

It’s plenty crowded considering the time of night!

The strangest thing about Chongqing is realising that the ICA facility is not underground but in reality multiple stories high in a building.

Also something I wanted to mention but forgot, IO doesn’t often make translation errors for their locations, pretty sure all of them are correct throughout the trilogy, but when they do (like in Dubai) they fix it, so Chongqing having a whole bunch of wrong signs is either another one of those careless errors, or an actual sign (no pun intended) that it was designed for Hong Kong first and never edited for Chongqing
