It’s like the designers were taunting us.

“You want to go guns blazing on this mission, don’t you? Don’t you, coward?”

" I’m a killer, and always have been. They say once you taste blood, it changes you forever - I wouldn’t know. 'cause it’s been part of my diet since day one. What is worth killing for, you might ask? I wouldn’t know, 'cause I never had any other choice. I have always followed orders. I’m taking another man’s life - all I can say is, it’s both easier and more difficult then you might imagine. So this is my life - and what is life? Religion offers very simple answers -science offers new possibilities. Did we indeed rise out of that primeval goo by conscience, or are we the result of divine intervention? If you take the religious stand, man was made at the end of a week’s hard work, and god was pretty tired. Imperfections, flaws, weaknesses, vulnerability - that’s the price we pay for being the last item on the assembly line. No matter which version is right - if you can improve on this prototype, that not even evolution has perfected yet, by means of science - create a sharper original instead of this sloppy copy, this mortal coil - why not? Ask yourself - what’s worth living for? A lot. What’s worth dying for, then? Not a lot. So if you had the choice, it wouldn’t be that hard, would it? It would be worth killing for, wouldn’t it? Life is a blessing, but death can be a friend - there’s always a price to pay. In nature there’s neither good nor bad, right or wrong - there are only consequences. Not so long ago, a few scientists were willing to assume the cape of the creator, delve deep into this creational abyss to find the secrets, to stretch the known boundaries, to create life - they could not foresee the consequences."

Traditions of the Trade may have had an opportunity to poison one of the Fuchs brothers, there is a cut Hotel waiter, laxative item, dialogue and a few other things to suggest it.

Hotel Waiter

There is a variation of this image in my concept art collection, incorrectly titled “Receptionists” also showing the flower shop dealer.

image

Unused information alerts for hotel waiter and receptionist. The second image shows that you could disguise as them. The hotel receptionist can be seen in some old screenshots, but the model is low-detail and seen from a distance.

Laxative and stove pot

A laxative item is cut from the game, but everything suggests it’s for Hong Kong. The herbal shop owner has a description mentioning that he sells laxatives as well.

In old screenshots, pots can be seen on a stove in the restaurant. I haven’t seen food on the tables or the hotel waiter in any of the screenshots.

Dialogue

In the final game, 47 will talk to Fritz Fuchs about his foie gras, telling him that fat foods are a killer, and there are similar unused interactions.

I don’t know of any firm evidence showing a poison opportunity, but the ability to take a waiter disguise, 47’s cut lines and so on all suggest something like this. The interior of the restaurant’s food elevator is modeled and textured as well.

The level has some other cut things, like how the entrance metal detectors were on the inside of the hotel, metal detectors absent from the stairways, rotating entrance doors, a few NPCs and areas got redesigned, positions for “drunk people” in the casino, sitting next to Fritz, which may be these. You can see some more screenshots of it at the gallery here.

The cut bath attendant disguise was left in the final game, and I modified the file to make it usable.

I’ve read a theory once or twice that Fritz Fuchs was absent from the game until later stages, but as far back into the game’s development I know of, there is at least still a man wearing a lab coat, sitting in the casino, and Frantz is in his room. The old screenshots of Frantz sitting by the pool might just be promotional material set up for a screen. This might also be the case for the image of Ort-Meyer sitting in his office.
