The main missions and the character missions are almost too story heavy. Then the gigs and side jobs usually have little story at all. It’s very unbalanced, especially when you consider the gigs make for most of the gameplay. That’s just my perspective anyway.
Like I said though, other than that I enjoyed the game very much. Pure gameplay wise, it was pretty much the open world Deus Ex I wanted.
This The Thermian Argument in full effect - “there are established truths” means “boss wanted it that way”. You can’t play an old V because they didn’t want or care enough to let you, you can’t play a fat V because they didn’t want or care enough to let you, you can’t have a character as dark skinned as the Haitians in the game because…
These are all creative decisions that they are responsible for, not “truths”.
I sincerely beg to differ - T-Bug essentially gives you the “this is my last day before retirement” then dies on the mission as predictably as any police character who has made the same claim.
But they’re not - the leads made the devs spend massive amounts of time and resources on missions where you help out the cops, collectible cars, etc. You can’t post the map with the “points of interest” markers as proof of content then pretend it’s entirely about the characters.
CD Projekt Red devs were quite clear they wished it was all about the characters, because a huge part of the problems of the game came from the pressure to try to make it a GTA V clone without having the resources of Rockstar.
On top of all that, Night City itself is a character - and that character is loaded up with weird transphobic trash that seems to reflect that in a world where you can augment your entire body the most excitingly transgressive thing in media is a woman with a penis.
That’s a lot of backstory and lore, nothing to make her a major character in the event - it is a long RPG tradition to give lots of backstory and arcs etc to minor characters because they are minor. Being minor means they are more flexible and likeable as they don’t have to do anything that pushes the story forward - drop off when they’re not available etc.
Just about every single person you can talk to in Disco Elysium has all of that and more but they are not “major” characters, they are just ones that are written out. Given that CD Projekt Red spent six years on this thing and they employ a ton of writers, it is completely unsurprising that they wrote lots of background into all their quest linked characters.
Anyone who has ever met a writer can tell you they love writing backstory and lore for their characters.
Yes, that is nice - but I need to point something out:
Not only can they love Claire and agree that the game deserves to be blasted for transphobia but you’ll notice that in general people who like the game are very eager to believe that one character fixes everything and much less happy to hear that it doesn’t - even when it comes from literally the same person.
You don’t really seem to be taking them onboard if they are inconvenient, for starters you didn’t even acknowledge that Riley McLeod exists despite me linking to his article. He also didn’t seem to notice Claire or find her striking, probably because relative to the content of the game Claire is a tiny, tiny part and only “major” if you opt to do her quest line.
Part of the reason the trans women who love Claire do love her is that she isn’t written around be trans, she’s a character with arcs, a past, flaws, etc who also happens to be trans. So if you’re a major studio head, you just get blasted because a year ago your social media guy made a transphobic joke and now you’re had the transphobic content in your game highlighted, but you don’t want to change anything because you’re so proud of yourself for comparing trans people to a mixed flavour softdrink - you ask how many trans character there are and the answer comes back zero.
You find one you haven’t recorded the audio for yet, haven’t shown in trailers and tell the team to make that character trans - trans pride flag on the car and everything, then you congratulate yourself for your genius, then congratulate yourself again when your casting director hires a trans woman to voice the character.
The end result is you end up with a positive trans character who cis people who like the game will point to as “balance” and “proof the game is good” even though the character is optional and meets the “exists in the world” level of representation that cis people take for granted while ignoring that the only way they could possibly have gotten to this point is if they pretty much had nothing but contempt for trans people - but then realised that some positive representation press might sell more copies.
That is the “last minute” aspect.
In this case its probably the only thing that makes Claire a positive character - they didn’t take the time to make her weird and fetishy after they decided she’s trans.
This update addresses the vulnerability that could be used as part of remote code execution (including save files): - Fixed a buffer overrun issue. - Removed/replaced non-ASLR DLLs."
RDR2 is probably one of the most detailed games I’ve played that isn’t from someone like Kojima.
I can go back and play it and I’ll find something new. The various details from letters, receipts, journals, to just world building it’s absurd but engrossing. I haven’t seen that level of detail since MGS V and it’s why I hold those two games in high regard personally.
Cyberpunk as a game satisfied me, but I’m gonna wait before I go for my second outing in night city. I hope for a NG+ to be implemented. Along with various quality of life improvements like allowing us to readjust our characters looks and gender.
The Nintendo Leaks provided a lot of insight in cut content for N64 titles such as the series famous Luigi being in Mario 64.
It it allows people to restore cut content or find uncompressed textures/audio files I’m completely okay with it.
Or the XBLA version of Goldeneye 64 that was leaked, that was cool and I really hope it gets released because a lot of people want it.
CDPR and their source code being leaked is a grey area for me. It’s gonna provide insight for the coding process behind games. I’m mainly hoping for further understanding behind Cyberpunk since at launch it was a technical disaster for a lot of people.
On the off hand everyone and their mom will have access to it and I have sympathy for the people who worked hard to create something like that. It’s like a child to them and it must be devastating to see it.
People are gonna be making drastic overhauls to games and potentially new games as well if/when the source code leaks if CDPR can prevent it.
Sure, there are leaks that can do no harm to a company, I know of several such as all the leaked Stalker builds, Doom 3 alpha leak and so on but then you have things such as the leaked Half-Life 2 content back in 2003. It almost killed Valve.
What the hacker is doing is Ransom at best that I don’t agree with and is willing to sell to the highest bidder.
As I mentioned before the leaks with Nintendo and Goldeneye are what I consider to be harmless given they involve 20+ year old titles and are the type of leaks I’m okay with.
Now that we know what the hacker has then it’s gonna be devastating for CDPR especially when involving Cyberpunk. We won’t know what’s gonna happen in the coming hours, but hopefully it doesn’t result in the release of the source code for these titles.
For the record I don’t support what they did at all, just saying there might be benefits for players if it goes public. There are things you can only do with access to the source code, like say change the physics to increase the frametate cap in Doom 3, as an example off the top of my head.
In none. Using source code that is not licensed in a way that allows you to to make use of it throws the mod far into the area of piracy.
In the 2020 Nintendo data leak much source code of many devices were published. People assumed this will give the homebrew and emulator scene a big push, but the authors of these made clear that while it is possible to learn the algorithms from there and not copy paste the code to stay technically legal, STILL will result in an army of lawyers making sure you have a really bad time.
“Having a 16 plus year old emulator project go up in smoke isn’t something I’d want to happen. I’ve already seen a few comments on Reddit saying something along the lines of, ‘Well, why don’t you just make use of it but change it up a little before using it’, which, uhh, is a profound lack of perspective,” Lioncache said. “Legally, you generally don’t get a second chance about these sorts of things if legal action actually gets taken.”
Nintendo is very protective and litigious, but I don’t think CDPR would be that militant. If people just used the code for basic modding purposes like my Doom 3 example, not for profit or making their own game, then I feel like CDPR wouldn’t send in the lawyers.
You make a fair point though, and could easily be right. Also as a modern game with all the usual modern settings and mod tools, I doubt it really makes that big a difference anyway.
Uh sorry no sane company would tolerate you using stolen and sold data for mods. They probably even are legally forced to defend their copyright if they intend to keep it.
Maybe you know copyright law better than me, but I don’t think looking through some files to better know which modifications to make in w game that supports modding is at all the same thing as using copyrighted works in a way that would force someone to defend their intellectual property in court. But again… you make a solid point either way, modders might treat it as off limits for these reasons, whatever the nuance.
When did I say anything was wrong with using modding tools or that we needed more? You keep pretending I said things I didn’t. All I said was the source code being out there could possibly have some benefits beyond the standard mod abilities, which I think history bares out as true pretty easily with other games.
That doesn’t mean I support what happened, I don’t, and it doesn’t mean it’ll even end up being useful for anything in particular, it might not be. It’s just a possible upside of a crap situation, though @Urben is probably right about it being legal poison anyway.
I think that’s enough back and forth over a simple thing though, agree to disagree if we still do.
With all respect, its not trolling, its not weak comparison. I’ve waited for years and paid full price for a AAA industry level game, which turns out to be in a sub par quality.
You can be happy with your experience, I’m just sharing mine, nothing exploitative, just a simple comparison of features from a top game.
Also, its very sad about the source code leak. Wish CDPR recovers from this
