Elusive Target #34: THE FIXER (Year 5: February 28 - March 9)

Got him and maintained my perfect SA ET streak.

This ET was just as satisfying to complete as it was in HITMAN 2. I originally failed this ET in H1 (its my only ET failure to-date) because of my own frustrations in how long it was taking me to complete (I shot him in head openly in the consulate after getting the diamonds and was gunned down after I made a wrong turn and was cornered by a locked door).

So being able to not let him defeat me again was great. The contract itself is still garbage and unnecessarily long.

I need to know one thing before attempting this: is it safe to KO the courier when he is by the box righ before entering the school or will you instafail?

I think is about here.

He is safe to KO after he shakes hands with the shopkeeper (which is to pass over the diamonds) and the “Thanks. Who came up with this, anyway?” dialogue starts to play. Though i waited until the pocketing animation ended. Just in case.

Just watch IO finally release the Arcade once this Elusive Target has expired (twice to include Galore replay).

Not sure, but I guess you can pacify or even kill the target, after he talked to the courier and they both leave the cafe. The target isn’t necessary for the plot after that point, so there shouldn’t be a problem.

Well, the first time playing the Fixer and it went better than I thought. I managed to kill Xander Haverfoek no problem at all, but it was the Courier that I had a slight problem with as he accidentally slipped into the school and I had to subdue him behind the tank at short notice. I left his body behind the tank and made a quick run for the exit, however, his body was found by a guard, which reduced my potential 5 star Silent Assassin to 4 stars. Never mind I guess, at least I can say the mission is complete!

I think they gave up on Arcades outside paid content.

Hopefully. They really only need to release a handful of Arcade contracts to allow unrestricted kill options on all targets without sacrificing the score. The Fixer, the Pharmacist, the Chef, the Warlord, the Ex-Dictator, The Deceivers, and the Procurers.

Does the Fixer eventually meet with the Courier at the school to receive the diamonds?

Nah.

The courier going to the school is only there because they had to have him go somewhere after they decided to remove him completely leaving the location after obtaining the diamonds. Was removed before the ET was ever activated.

Leaving the area definitely would’ve sucked. Though imagine how bad it would’ve been if the Courier and the Fixer aborted their meeting and former immediately set off to depart the area without the diamonds all because you stood too close to them at the beginning…

That was also pretty much a thing.

You know how Diana warns you that you’re getting too close to the courier when you’re tracking him and he delays going to get the diamonds? That used spook him and also cause him to leave, without collecting the diamonds.

Exactly where in the Consulate does the Fixer go? So far I can’t find even one walkthrough video indicating this as they all have him eliminated at the Cafe. And while we’re on the subject where exactly at the School is the Courier’s stopping point?

Also does the “Track The Courier” objective get triggered when the guy reaches the school or only when he’s knocked out?

Basically just follows Claus Strandberg around on his route.

Does he follow Strandberg to the school if you trigger the consulate lockdown?

He’s not actually set to follow Claus, its just his route coincides with Claus’s iirc.

Oh that’s unfortunate. Given I already lost my Silent Assassin streak due to my screwup in the Splitter, I was actually thinking of taking that guy out with the freaking tank.

Welp, I beat it.

And…wow is this just as bad as I remember it being. The tailing is tedius, following Xander around the consulate is tedius, waiting around and not being to do anything is tedius! The whole mission put together is just unneccesarily long and convoluted, and I actively dreaded playing it, nevermind when I finally did.

For this run, I did the mission SA/SO, so some of that tedium is self-inflicted admittedly, but that’s limited to all the guards in the consulate being enforcers (rather than a select few, which would still make this a PITA to complete), and that doesn’t stop the courier’s long marketeer routines and Xander being impossible to distract. It’s an absolute mess of a contract that needs reworking; by removing the complications, shortening the courier’s routine by getting rid of the painfully slow stalking quest, and making Xander have a longer routine that takes him in and around the consulate, instead of just constantly shadowing Strandberg, as if he were a super-enforcer guard. It makes it impossible to interact with him and makes the toilets and rooms that he frequently stands near pointless for isolation opportunities. There is a reason I didn’t want this to re-run without it being reworked first.

The only fun part of the mission was when I was making my way through the consulate (I.E, the bits that I knew I could consistently pull off, and rely on the base game logic). Everything else was a slog. I had to…uh…“restart” about 6-8 times overall. The killing of Xander wasn’t that satisfying either (I used a Remote EMP + Gas Canister, which I hadn’t done before), I felt more like I had finished a chore, rather than beaten a game that was hard.

For some positivity, the mission did make me feel like a cool secret-agent man (something the NPC’s around marrakesh kept pointing out to me when I kept crouching and hiding). So it has that going for it, I suppose.

There’s a very good reason that, when I reviewed the mission back in 2022, it was placed in my “Not great, but still redeemable” tier (the second-lowest rung on my tierlist) for all the reasons I gave above. Still feels like a fair placement to me.

As I said a few days ago peeps; be careful what you wish for, because you might not like what you get.

Unedited gameplay is available here (Fair warning, it’s ~30 minutes long!)

If IO is reading this, please don’t solely rely on replies from this forum, collect data from multiple sources and demographics, which will give you a wider reach of players and more variety when it comes to answers – hell, you have a newsletter via email, that’s one data source right there!. As evidenced by the polling from this post, the picks by players are seemingly just targets that haven’t ran in a while, not ones that are, you know, bad to play. I’m still a bit surprised by how many people wanted the Angel of Death to re-run though, despite having similar issues to that of Pertti from The Bookkeeper in that they are impossible to isolate.

What this poll does show however, is something rather telling as to how people play the game on this forum; a good few of the top-rated poll responses require some level of speedrunning (or at least being in the right place at the right time) to complete (the notable exception being the Fixer); The AOD, Prince, Sensation, and Pharmacist in particular demonstrate this, as those run on strict internal timers, until the mission makes it very tricky to kill either of them as they walk around in public areas. That’s kind of ironic, consdering from what comments and posts I’ve read on here from members, people don’t like having their fun restricted or want linear levels. It’s almost like these weren’t re-run as much in the past because players found them annoying to beat…that’s something to think about.

The Fixer should’ve been released as an ETA contract, instead of a re-run, or the very least both at the same time. As I said, the most common reasoning on here everyone chose it because it hadn’t run since H2, which makes this data skew toward availability rather than how the mission plays. I have a strong suspicion that these answers would probably be quite different were the demographics of the poll opened up to more people (I.E, reddit, newletter subs, twitch, discord etc.) instead of solely focusing on one demographic that are more invested in the game.

On some more personal news:

If this wasn’t obvious from a few days back, I’m currently taking a break from HitmanForum for a bit. I have something else to post and reveal on Monday (so yes, this is a break from the break, but no way in hell was I gonna pass up the opportunity to rant about The Fixer), but after that, I won’t be online here for a while.

5 weeks and three days, to be precise.

Seeya Monday
