Elusive Target #34: THE FIXER (Year 5: February 28 - March 9)

Ok, finally time for me to give my rundown of this long-awaited ET that I, at long last, managed to complete properly.

The first time he was around, I hadn’t picked up the game yet, so I missed him.

The first rerun of H1 targets, I tried to stick him with a poison syringe, but he did that little half-turn that causes you to punch the NPC while giving a status or having been spotted. I didn’t yet know about how the disconnect method works, and the SA status being preserved if only the target sees you and you kill them before they tell anyone hadn’t been introduced yet, so I had no choice at the time but to finish with my first non-SA ET by snapping his neck after my cover had been blown.

The next time he reappeared, during H2, I forgot that you can’t take out the courier until after he gets the diamonds, and insta-failed before I could restart.

This time , though, was finally gold. Started at the default spot, sigsuit with gloves of course, walked to the shop where you can go upstairs to find the chief of security for the embassy on a phone call, grabbing the two nearby coins before going up. Took the keycard on the table up here, then used the rooftop pathway to get down into the cafe bathroom, grabbing an emetic syringe from the hidden stash here. Got to the meeting just in time for the target and the courier to say goodbye, then followed the courier. Kept back pretty far, whipped out the camera and zoomed anytime he stopped. When he eventually made the pickup, I knew what path he would take, so I went to the trash bin he walks passed and placed both coins where he would see them and move out of view of the two guards on the steps nearby. Once he was out of view, I subdued him and took the diamonds.

Went to the embassy, climbed over the wall and went down to the parking garage. Snuck around the outer boundary of the garage to the keycard reader on the double doors going up into the embassy, behind a soldier and security guard talking. Went up the stairs into the janitor closet and took the janitor disguise up here. Went back down into the security room and disabled the cameras when the guard wasn’t looking, went to the room where you can get the key for the car exit, then went back upstairs and hid in the office adjacent to the room with Strandberg’s safe. Waited for Strandberg and the target to walk past one of the doors, then threw a coin to make Strandberg come in, hiding behind a desk so he wouldn’t see me. Once he and the target were in the room and facing away from me, I hit the command to shut the door they just entered, then stuck the target with the emetic syringe and hid behind the desk again while Strandberg left. Followed the target to the bathroom and waited for him to finish puking. Once he turned around, I pulled out the concealable knife I had started the mission with in my loadout, and stabbed him right in the heart. Hid his body, went back to the janitor room to change back into the sigsuit, snuck back down to the garage, around the outer wall, all the way to the car exit, and drove out.

Finally got silent assassin on this bastard. The anxiety that filled me as I was about to subdue the courier is beyond measure, because I just was t sure if I had truly done everything correctly or not, even though I had. But, once he was out and the mission didn’t fail, I knew I had it. And I finally did.

Woohoo 15 minutes to complete that mission, I haven’t seen that since the Iconoclast :x

I understand why it had so high a failure rate. For some reason the courier’s dialogues with the merchants don’t have subtitles unless you’re extremely close, and after seeing his school loop twice without being able to understand whether he did get the diamonds or not I decided not to risk it, started over, and basically had to stick to his butt. Even with subtitles the dialogue itself is really cryptic without any feedback from Diana. Really bad design here

@Mini 's favourite: Haverfoek is gone. I set him up as a Militia spy. It’s quite the scandal at the Swedish Consulate. His death will not be investigated. Your turn.
Head of Sanguine: Very well. The secrets of the Courier’s agenda.

Seriously, he was quite exciting. Except the part of following the Courier around and missing the exchange and having to infiltrate the school.

Just checked the Leaderboards. Number 1 got it in 07:45.

Sucker is gone. And that is all that matters.

I failed again, just like many years ago. Maybe in the same way, but I don’t remember. I thought the diamond exchange had already taken place, so I neutralized the courier. Failing. This Elusive Target is cursed

That caught me off guard as well and I almost missed the dialogue.

Afterwards, I went the safe route and just "blue egg"ed the courier. As it was a public area, he was woken up and for a second I worried whether he was programmed to notice that he dropped the diamonds .

Aww man, sorry to hear that. Let’s hope it gets a reactivation maybe towards the end of this year so you get another shot! :crossed_fingers:t2:

GOT IT! SASO, default start/loadout, wired The Fixer and KO’ed only the courier fella. My heart was pounding the entire time - really didn’t want to mess this one up, because I doubt they’ll ever rerun it.

Years ago I played it once in H2016 via Peacock, but didn’t remember it too well. IIRC, back then I played it safe - KO’ed the target first and only broke his neck after successfully retrieving the diamonds. But this run, potentially the only one, had to be better than that.

Took me at least 3.5 hours to explore, plan and practice the whole thing. During test runs, I wasted a ton of time following the courier, expecting him to drop the gems somewhere, but no luck. Even prepared for plan B where I’d sneak into the school in case I missed him on the way, but it was risky, so I’m glad I didn’t need it.

No Loadout was also possible - just had to rob the shoe shop for coins and go for a different melee kill, but I decided to wire the bastard and pack some heat, just in case.

SA/SO, used the blue egg to quickly get the diamonds after the exchange, gave the target a flash phone to give myself enough of a window to separate him from Strandberg (so I could time the shot without the patrolling guard and while the door is ideally closed), immediately did 3 shots to alert the whole consulate and the guards, almost died while escaping from long range gunfire and left without my briefcase since I threw it and it flew to an unaccessible place (the roof of the stall near the exit).

So it has been a long while since I’ve done this ET so I’m gonna comment on it a bit: I like the idea, the insta-fail conditions are still annoying, the courier really takes his time getting to the exchange but the new free knock-out methods make it way easier to get the diamonds and not only it seems like you can’t use sniper shots to distract him since he instantly panics and runs to a guard (or Strandberg), if Strandberg gets too panicked they just…disappear?
I’ve checked the consulate, tunnel and school but I have no idea where they go, not coming back even after 10-15 minutes.

But hey it also gave an amusing kill feed:

I hope. Or maybe a permanent reactivation at the end of all

Probably that second one. If I’m not mistaken, the end of year reactivations are only for people who missed any ETs throughout the year, not for people who completed or failed them. I could be wrong because I’ve always completed them and never been able to participate in the end of year run, which feels exclusionary, quite frankly.

Should be right. I missed the first two or three ETs in Year 4 and screwed up the Undying Returns. At the end of the year, I was able to play the missed ETs, but the failed Undying stayed locked.

Holy shit, I wanted to distract attention with the can and by accident at the very last second the courier came around the corner, the game switched from throwing to targeting the courier… and mission failed. I’ve failed with a can.

I’ve failed this target in 2016 in similar manor. I don’t have words.

Someone, who’s not very liked on this forum, has pretty failproof strategy to this target.
Just don’t kill target before his meeting with the courier and simply wait for the courier near the school entrace where two guards discussing Zaydan’s relationship with the hostage.
When the courier gets there, he will have diamonds on him already and you’re safe to possess them

@Combatglue Once this run is over, could you give us some stats on this activation of The Fixer - since it was the one with the lowest success rate in H1. Would be interesting to see if there is any sort of change given that everyone isn’t going in blind this time around.

Doesn’t have to be any flashy images like you guys release for the CelebrETs, can just be typed out.

I also made a mistake despite knowing what to expect - I thought the Fixer’s meeting with the courier was the actual handover of the diamonds. I didn’t want to watch any videos, I thought I was being careful. Once again, I fell victim to the contract’s terrible design.

So at the first opportunity, I tried to pull him away to a quiet spot, but the auto-lock kicked in, and I didn’t react in time. Instant fail. I absolutely hate this auto-targeting; it’s ruined so many moments for me in Freelancer.

Even without that, I would’ve taken down the courier, thinking he already had the diamonds.

I can only say: ‘For fuck’s sake.’

I’ve never failed an ET before. Fixer was the only one back in 2016 that I screwed up in a similar way - because the game is misleading. I thought they would’ve improved this over the years.

And supplemental to that, @Combatglue, if there are any plans to make an entry for The Fixer in Arcade mode, or make it part of the recurring ET lineup, assuming ETs continue past Year 5. Simply confirming if it’s a flat “no” or not would suffice.

So, having just finished the ET for the first time in memory, I can safely say that my opinion from before still stands:

The Fixer is the best ET. Because he does finger guns. :point_right: :point_right:

Don’t let Drib hear this one.
